Happy Valentine’s Day, Jumble friends! What started out as a Christian feast day honoring one or two early saints, Valentine’s Day as we now know it is a celebration of romance and romantic love. Although it isn’t a public holiday in any country, the traditional way to celebrate is by sending flowers, offering sweets and sending cards. I prepared early this year and managed to do all three! And if you’re a regular Jumble player, you know that it usually means a special themed puzzle. David and Jeff delivered today so let’s get right to it!
All of the words were quick solves and were immediately visible upon first glance. My feeling is that SEIZE would be the most difficult anagram only because of the EI placement. The I before E trick doesn’t work on this word, but it wasn’t necessary since those two letters weren’t needed in the final solve.
Moving on to the cartoon, love is definitely in the air at the Jumble Coffee Shop! A young man with his soul patch facial hair and hipster clothing can be seen offering a “BE MINE” cookie to his romantic interest. The young woman in the panel is all smiles and exclaims “I love it!” which must be music to the young mans ears. Jeff added a very cool detail of a steamed milk heart on her latte which really made the cartoon extra special! Just do a quick google search for latte art and you’ll see some amazing examples of this technique.
The final solve was no trouble at all because of all the clues in the dialogue and sentence. David did a great job with the letter layout today, but there was no way he could keep it cryptic. SWEET was first to be found leaving VERY for a super fast finish. Overall, this puzzle may have been an easy solve, but Jeff’s attention to detail really captured my heart and it was an extra special way to start off this day of love.

Happy Tuesday, Jumble friends! Jumping right into the puzzle this morning, I thought we had a new clue word with FATTY. Checking the website, I found out that it was used on 4/06/17 and the anagram was only changed up by a couple of letters. PARADE took the longest to figure and would be my pick for the most difficult anagram to decipher. I originally saw it as APPEAR and then DRAPED before it finally came into view.
Moving along to the cartoon, the first thing I noticed was that the panel seemed very sad and cold. The two characters we see are in separate watercraft and their facial expressions are not the upbeat and happy smiles that Jeff usually draws. Reading the dialogue and sentence clues us in to the fact that the characters are a couple, however; they’re going through a difficult time in their relationship. The man asks his partner if she would like to follow him, and her reply was no. So heartbreaking!
Looking for detail in the photo, I noticed a campfire in the background and there are a few gentle wisps of smoke coming off of the pile. My mind immediately thought that Jeff was showing us that their “flame” had burned out and their relationship is definitely over. It was a fantastic detail, but too much for me to handle with this being the day before Valentine’s.
Looking at the letter layout, it was jumbled very well, but I knew the answer instantly. Crossing out the letters proved my hunch correct and another solve was complete. Have a terrific Tuesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

Good Monday morning everyone! Looking back at last weeks puzzles, we saw some very interesting clue word anagrams. EERRTV, FRUGIE, WRTTEE, and GLUEDD were my favorites. My pick for the best cartoon of the week was definitely the STATE OF THE ART drawing. The cartoon featured the state of Alaska and had very intricate relief style details that really made the panel pop. With Jeff and David qiving us quite a brain workout over the course of the week, I’m hopeful that the trend of top notch puzzles will continue!
David told us in his interview that Monday puzzles were easier on purpose so I started the solve with that mindset. POUND, SHYLY and POLICE were all instantly visible. BREEZY required a few glances before I was able to figure it out so it’s my choice for the most difficult word to decipher.
Looking at the cartoon, I immediately felt a feeling of déjà vu. Last Monday’s panel started off with a cooking theme featuring a woman preparing an omelet in her kitchen. Today’s image shows a cooking theme as well, but these professional chefs appear hard at work with each of them doing a different task. Working left to right, we see one chef masterfully handling two skillets on a cooktop. It’s unclear as to what he’s cooking, but the action lines indicate that he’s moving the pans back and forth over a high flame. The woman in the middle is busy whisking something in a bowl as she has a conversation with our third chef who is going to town with some serious cleaver action. If you have a guess as to what ingredient he’s preparing, please let me know in the comments section. My guess would be that it’s beef tartare.
Reading the dialogue and sentence, it was obvious that the 7-letter surprise answer would have something to do with flying. The two P’s brought CHOPPER to mind making it an instant solve. With the puzzle complete, I headed back to the cartoon to check for ay detail that I may have missed. Sure enough there was one detail I overlooked which was the middle chef’s footwear. If you look closely under the prep table and between the bowls, you’ll see she’s rocking some crocs! Have a marvelous Monday and I’ll see you tomorrow!

Ok, I’ll say it. The words today were no real CHALLENGE, but trying to make a RHYME of all this, related to OUTER SPACE? The REASONing? It was tough. And I was late for MASS. I didn’t PLANET that way, I’m not very organized lately. My head’s just in the clouds…SPACEd out, so to speak…But, enough about me…Our cartoon…Today, Jeff has taken us WAY OUT THERE. MARS. I think MILKY WAY, I think BRUNO. I remember that a few years ago, NASA found evidence of WATER there. I know it’s the 4th PLANET from the SUN, and it’s RED. But this? A restaurant? New FRONTIER…Ok, What shall we call it? “The MARS BAR“? Yes, I know it’s a restaurant, but for now, it’ll do. We see three couples, and a man entering alone. The maître d’ is asking if he could take his “climate helmet“. He’s aHEAD of the game here. The man at the back table resembles George Jetson, but his hair is black, not RED, and that’s no Jane he’s sitting with. The other two couples…The women are drinking, while the men are eating. It’s easy to see that everyone’s having a really GOOD time. And I RED that there’s no distinct boundary between ATMOSPHERE and SPACE, but there is an imaginary line about 62 miles from the surface, called the KARMAN LINE. This is usually where scientists say ATMOSPHERE meets OUTER SPACE. So KARMAN at you with this information…The customers liked the GOOD ATMOSPHERE! BIG BANG! Solved! Ok, eye candy. Today? A BYE candy. What I’m NOT seeing. The man on the right side of the table of couples? No arm! …Jeff, are you pulling my leg? So, there you have it Folks, Done!

But I’ve got to creep down the alley way, fly down the highway…before they come to catch me I’ll be gone.

Today’s words…ROBIN? How ironic, huh? We’ve got some serious Robbing going on here today…But looking at those 5 little letters? First quick glance? Show of hands…Inborn? And DELUGE? Did it make you come Unglued for a moment or two? Great anagrams. POETRY really didn’t take much RHYME, and WHARF did apPIER right away. These words aren’t new..but they may have STOLEN a bit of your time this morning…Ok, on to the main feature…Our cartoon. Today, Jeff’s taken us back to days of social unrest…Did I say “back to”? Hmm. We see a VIKING ship, known as a dreki, returning from a raid. Our Hersir, Hagar, is seen greeting his wife, Olga. Olga’s just tickled pink, isn’t she? And wouldn’t you know it, of all days, she’s dressed in black. Pink would have gone so much better today, but nope, she’s wearing black. Our men working those oars, farmers and hunters by trade, look as disgruntled as one might expect. OAR maybe they’re just tired. Let’s face it, Folks, beating and pillaging can be exhausting. Oddly enough though, the last man, on the right, has the biggest grin on his face. He’s the only one who’s face isn’t DRAGON down to the floor. And he’s looking up at the Dragon head of the ship, which looks very angry. I have to be honest here, Folks, I have no clue. Why does this man look so happy? Inquiring minds want to know…Jeff? Perhaps come on BOARD and let us know? Ok, let’s dock this ship…Hagar’s saying..”We’re back”, we see our men ROWING…The Vikings are home after a long…”ROWED” TRIP! Boom! Drop anchor, Folks, we’re docking! Great pun, David! You’ve STOLEN the show once more! Ok, eye candy. We’ve got two of the horned helmets, and a mixed bag of rounded helmets and what looks like a fisherman’s cap. And then, once again is our Happy Viking. I’m going to call him ARNE. Because ARNE we dying to know why he’s grinning? And, what is that he’s wearing? A stocking cap? Anyway, none of this headgear is COVERing it. But if we look closely, Hagar and Olga are wearing bracelets. Hers is engraved with X’s. His with O’s. X’s and O’s? Hugs and Kisses? ARNE you kidding me? So, There you have it, Folks, Done!

Good Thursday morning, Jumble fans! The first three clue words came instantly today. The fourth anagram, WETTER, caused me to take a few glances before coming into view. I started off by trying to make a couple of words with RE before it occurred to me that ER would be the suffix. Making quick work of the clue words, I was now ready to move on to the cartoon.
The online version of the puzzle that I normally use to enlarge the cartoon didn’t post the image this morning so I was stuck with my newspaper copy instead. My first thought while looking at the panel was “What in the world is that thing in the middle?” It looked like four people standing around a futuristic console staring at a holographic projection. Realizing that I would need to read the sentence and dialogue for more information, I took a moment to do so and let it all sink in.
The holographic projection turned out to be an interactive sculpture of Alaska, and what a beautiful sculpture it was! Jeff painstakingly added loads of detail in a relief type fashion. Visible were a bear, an eagle, a totem pole, a salmon, a king crab, and a few trees. The best detail of all was the fact that the sculpture had the number 49 as its base. 49 just isn’t a random number, it stands for Alaska being admitted to the union as the 49th state in 1959.
The solve for the surprise answer was obvious to me after reading the sentence and looking at the letter layout. I always check my work by crossing out the clue letters and sure enough, the answer was there. The words might not have been much of a challenge, so I’ll remember this Jumble by its clever cartoon.

Good morning everyone and happy Wednesday! It wasn’t all clear skies while figuring out the clue words this morning. ABATE took the longest time to solve and is my choice for the most difficult word of the day. Looking at the anagram that David masterfully jumbled, all I saw was BEAT with an extra A. After a few self-jumbles, it popped into view and I could glide on over to the cartoon.
Looking at Jeff’s drawing, we see two men and an old-time airplane in a field. It didn’t take rocket science to figure out that what we were looking at was the Wright brothers and their newfangled flying machine at Kitty Hawk. Orville Wright can be seen to the left in the panel with his brother, Wilbur, on the right.
Doing a bit of research, it was amazing to read all of the different facts and stories about these brilliant men. Out of the my hour long history lesson, I came away with one amazing detail that I thought would be interesting to share. A small piece of wood and a piece of the fabric from the Wright brothers airplane were carried to the surface of the moon by Astronaut Neil Armstrong aboard the lunar module “Eagle” on July 20th, 1969. This was just 65 years after the brothers’ first flight!
With my mind blown, I turned my attention back to the Jumble and started the final solve. PLANE was quite visible and seemed like the obvious word for the 5-letter slot. AS was coupled together in the letter layout leaving DAY for the finish. I wish everyone a wonderful Wednesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

Good Tuesday morning everyone! The first two clue words were no trouble at all and instantly came into view. BURGER was jumbled very well, but with the anagram starting with GER, it took just a slight pause to suss it out. FIGURE is my pick for the most difficult anagram this morning, but it wasn’t overly challenging either. The fact that it had 3-vowels was probably why it took a few seconds longer than the rest. With all of my clue letters solved, it was time to move on to the cartoon.
Looking at Jeff’s panel, I first saw a husband and wife duo in a small boutique shop that caters to men’s clothing. The man is standing on a small raised platform with a tri-fold mirror surrounding him so he can easily view all angles of his new attire. Does this particular dressing room staple have a proper name? It escapes me if it does but I’m sure we’ve all seen or utilized one.
Reading the sentence and dialogue, the man asks his significant other if the clothing looks good on him. It was at this point that I discovered a unique detail in the cartoon that seems to indicate that these two people are not a couple. If you look closely at the woman’s neck, you’ll see a tailor’s tape measure hanging which leads me to believe that the woman is in fact an employee of the shop! You never know where Jeff is going to place such a small detail, and it’s what makes me such a big fan of his work.
The letter layout for the solve was a single word containing 8-letters. David started the anagram with an S and surprisingly had the UI coupled together a little further down. SUITABLE instantly came into view making this solve a no-brainer. Have a terrific Tuesday and I’ll see you tomorrow!

Good morning everyone, and welcome back to another week of Jumble fun! David and Jeff gave us some challenging puzzles last week that contained some very unique clue words. LAPTOP, CACTUS, LAGOON, NEEDLE and CAMERA were my favorites, and the GOOD “IN-STINKS” surprise answer was one of the stinkiest puns we’ve encountered this year. Jeff went over the top on his Mount Rushmore cartoon and all of its superb detail won’t soon be forgotten. With my quick trip down memory lane complete, I settled in to begin my solve and this is how I did it:
All of the clue words came easily with just a slight pause on REVERT and BYPASS. Of those two words, BYPASS would be my pick for the most difficult one. DAFFY is a new clue word that I don’t recall seeing before so a new word on a Monday was a welcome addition.
Moving along to the cartoon, we see a woman talking on her cellphone as she cracks a couple of eggs into a skillet. It was a pretty straightforward panel with nothing jumping out at me in regards to fine detail. The flames lapping the bottom of the skillet and the perfectly cracked eggshells were all that caught my eye at first. Reading the dialogue and sentence, the woman is ending her conversation and intends on turning her attention to her omelet. And that’s when it hit me. Not the answer, but her preparation method for her morning meal. When making an omelet, I always crack the eggs in a separate bowl and whisk the heck out of them until they’re a uniform yellow color with no white strands. It sounds like she was in a rush this morning so I’ll have to forgive her “in the pan” method.
Taking a second look at the cartoon, I noticed that Jeff had drawn a window that show’s the sun just coming up over a tree and a house. I absolutely LOVE when he draws this type of imagery and it’s shadowy effect. It makes the cartoon feel lifelike and very believable. Well done, Jeff! This beautiful sunrise made my day.
The final answer was a 5-4 solve and was immediately visible upon writing out the clue letters. BREAK came first followed by FAST. An easy solve for a Monday, and we’ll no doubt have a challenge sometime later this week. Have a magnificent Monday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

Super Bowl Sunday!! It’s here, SPORTS FANS…The big game between the Philadelphia Eagles, and the New England Patriots! And Jeff has brought us right to the excitement! But first, our words. Today, Dave gave us a real pre-game WORKOUT! I’m pretty sure we’ve had these words before, but talk about SCRAMBLING! These were as impromptu as they come! HOOPLA? Didn’t it have an H at the end at one time? DISOWN? Show of hands…Who saw Wisdom? Hello? Is the AUDIBLE working? Oh, just me? Well…They’re all winners today, and the EXTRA POINT definitely goes to Dave! So, our cartoon…Jeff, take your place on the SPECIAL TEAM, because you KICKED some….today! The 50-Yard Line? Who’s POCKET did these two line? Great seats…And the couple is bi-partisan! He’s a Patriot fan, wearing his Tom Brady jersey, and she’s SPORTing Viking’s QB Sam Bradford’s. This couple has found the NEUTRAL ZONE! How cool is that? Reminds me of a story…A couple we know went through a divorce. My 5 year old nephew, a die-hard Yankee fan like the rest of his family, asked me if I knew about it. I was caught off GUARD. So, not knowing how to discuss divorce with a 5 year old, I DEFLECTED and asked him what he thought. He leaned in close and whispered…”Zia, they couldn’t be married. The mother is a Mets fan”! Imagine? The humanity! From the mouths of Babes…Anyway, I digress. The game. Jeff’s also showing us another Minnesota Vikings fan, this one donning his Nordic helmet and his Fran Tarkenton jersey! “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore”. No, Toto, we’re definitely in Minnesota! Too bad the Vikings got SACKED. Ok, so the dialogue…”What a view”…”Don’t need the binoculars”. We can SEE they’re right on the FIELD…The question…”They had a great…”? FIELD OF VISION! Way to go, Dave! TOUCHDOWN! Great PLAY on words! Ok, eye candy. Despite all the great details with the jerseys, the Vince Lombardi Trophy today has to go to the woman’s earrings..They’re tiny FOOTBALLS! How cute is that? So, There you have it, Folks, Done!

Set out in the hot desert, she plays this femme fatale,
Who steals the day and then at night sings in a musicale
Some bristled at the onset, does this play make much sense…
But soon it came together…this play ’bout succulents
And now success is obvious, it’s in its second year…

Jeff’s brought us to Broadway, and we see an actress taking leave. Her fans are all gathered around, looking at her adoringly. I’ve put her in the play, CACTUS CROOK. The name was just STUCK in my head. Our actress, THORNY ALOE, is well aware of the attention she’s attracting, as she says..”I love you all”! All EYES were on her, and she just… TOOK THE “STARES“! Really good one, Dave…You got right to the POINT! The “STARES“! I’m hoping those of you out there who suffer from the “Quotation Trepidation” didn’t just throw UP your hands in defeat today, because this one is truly UPLIFTing! Great pun! Ok, eye candy. I like the images on the phones’ cameras, but they’re not DEVELOPED enough to be really clear…I’m going with the finials on the STAIR case. They have that Cactus look…or is that an artichoke look? Either way, it SPIKED my interest…So, There you have it, Folks, Done!
