MHEET = THEME

LLSYY = SLYLY

PLUTIP = PULPIT

JURNIE = INJURE

CARTOON ANSWER:

SHE NEEDED A BLOOD TRANSFUSION. LUCKILY, THE PATIENT’S BOYFRIEND WAS – – –

THESYUPTJRE = JUST HER TYPE

Happy Friday, Jumble friends! We have a new clue word appearance today with SLYLY, but it wasn’t any trouble to decipher after using the LY trick. The LY trick is when you see an LY in a Jumble, place it at the end of your solution. It eliminates two letters and most of the time the answer will jump right out at you. PULPIT took a few extra seconds to come into view and is my choice for the most difficult anagram of the day. We last saw it on 12/15/17 where it was jumbled the exact same way. After solving all of the clue words, I noticed that they’re all in reverse alphabetical order. And going a step further, they’re all in ascending order in which they last appeared in the puzzle (if you omit SLYLY, of course). The dates were 7/12/17, 12/15/17, and 8/9/18.

Moving along to the cartoon, we see a woman in a hospital bed with a man and a nurse beside her. The dialogue and sentence informs us that the woman is need of a blood transfusion and her boyfriend just happens to be a match. The patient appears to be in good spirits and has a look of relief on her face as she hears the wonderful news.

The details in today’s panel were sparse with only a couple catching my attention. The nurse was wearing an ID tag attached to her shirt that had a small caricature of her face and some scribble lines next to it. It’s probably safe to assume that the scribbles would be her name and title. The patient has a wristband on her left hand which has three small squiggly lines on it. The final detail was the IV bag above the patients head. If you look closely, you can see the tubing line come out of the bottom of the bag and attach to the top of her right hand.

The letter layout for the final solution was a magnificent mashup of 11-letters. The anagram gave absolutely nothing away and it even started with THE to throw us off track. I noticed that the wording of the cartoon sentence, as well as the dialogue between the characters, didn’t use TYPE when talking about the blood. Crossing out those letters brought HER into view leaving JUST to finish it off. This wasn’t an overly difficult puzzle for a Friday, but the addition of a new clue word and a cryptic letter layout for the surprise answer left me in A POSITIVE mood. Have a fantastic Friday, and I’ll see you tomorrow.

FTASF – STAFF

DENKI – INKED

URSEEM – RESUME

NLEERT – RELENT

CARTOON ANSWER:   AFTER UPGRADING TO LODGING WITH TWO BEDROOMS, THEY WOULD HAVE – – –

SA   IED   SUM   RET   =    “SUITE” DREAMS

Good Morning, Everyone!              🛌 ROOM SERVICE?🛌

🎶 SUITE DREAMS are made of this…Who am I to disagree? I travel the world
And the seven seas…Everybody’s looking for something…🎶 “Sweet Dreams” – The Eurythmics 1983

🛌 Where y’day a couple reigned with money left to spare,
Today we see another, money not their only care.
They INKED upon arrival and agreed to one bedroom,
But let’s be honest…not conducive if you’d like to spoon…
The STAFF can bring you wine to drink, but after you relax?
It’s kind of hard to seek romance with kids ’round …these are facts…
But luckily the management was willing to RELENT,
And upgrading afforded them some “peace”…of Heaven sent”…
So now they sit and happily RESUME their tête à tête,
A little privacy giving a lot less need to fret…
Cause whether it becomes the need to sleep or not it seems,
That now they get to have the choice…Good night to all…”SUITE” DREAMS!🛌

Except for a DOUBLE take at RESUME, today’s words were easily put to BED.
And to anyone who frequents HOTELS or MOTELS, today’s cartoon was a SUITE little surprise! Jeff PLACEs us in a setting that’s showing COMFORT, INNside a ROOM. We see a couple HILTON and MARRI OTT, sitting, relaxing over a glass of wine. In the background, completely shaded in blue, we see two little girls in bunk beds. I’m going with girls, even though the child in the bottom bunk caused a BLANK ET first. But I enlarged the pic and looking very closely, LODGED near her eyes, I saw tiny little eyelashes…which Jeff only draws on girls. A MINUTE ABSOLUTE, which Jeff is famous for. They’re ABED, but can be seen playing with what seems to be a tiny stuffed bunny. Off to the right, we see a LAMPSHADEd in pink, and a BED, in a SECOND BEDROOM. The dialogue between the OTTs is telling us that they’re looking forward to sleep. But HILTON looks wide AWAKE, while MARRI’s eyes are heavily shaded. Exhaustion? Or three SHEETS to the wind? Hard to tell…But with our question telling us that they’ve “UPGRADED to the TWO BEDROOMS“-the MiniSUITE, what would they now have? “SUITE” DREAMS! Good one, David! You’re a real SLEEPER! I mean Keeper!

Ok, eye candy. The aforementioned eyelashes are a great detail. And the children’s eyes drawn so exaggeratedly wide are a dead giveaway to their resistance to sleep, hence the need for that SECOND BEDROOM. But I’m going with the plastic cups HILTON and MARRI are using to drink their wine. No Wine Glasses? Was the STAFF INN-experienced? Hmm…I have my RESERVATIONS, but I guess any PORT in a storm, huh? So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And may all your DREAMS be SUITE! 🛌🍷🙋🏻

GHEYUL – HUGELY

SNSITI – INSIST

CARTOON ANSWER: THE WEALTHY COUPLE ALWAYS FLEW FIRST CLASS AND COULD WELL AFFORD – – –

CHS   PKER   HGY   ISI  =   SKY-HIGH PRICES

Good Morning, Everyone!             ✈️  FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES? ✈️

🎶 Come FLY with me, let’s FLY,  let’s FLY away…If you can use some exotic booze, there’s a bar in far Bombay…Come FLY with me, let’s FLY, let’s FLY away….🎶 “Come Fly With Me” – Frank Sinatra   1958

✈️ Conspicuous consumption is what we’re seeing here…
A couple living lavishly while flying in the air.
They’re being HUGELY pampered, the perks are off the chart…
The masseuse with his POKER face is just a tiny part.
They’re dining on big lobsters, a champagne flute is shown
They INSIST on the very best, and money sets the tone…
Like CHESS they take their places, only First Class will do
They don’t intend to sit abreast from folks like me and you.
It’s nice to have such money, to spend without a care…
Especially while traveling…its pure luxury in the air.
We all crave things indulgent, human nature comes with vices…
And when you’re rich you can include paying these SKY HIGH PRICES! ✈️

Checking our words, I found three Sweet Repeats from the past. HUGELY couldn’t be found, and may very well be appearing here in the Jumble for the FIRST time. It also seems to be the word that may cause a LAYOVER today. Four friends had CONTACTed me by 4:30 this morning, CLAIMing RED EYES from staring at it, and needed some help being COACHed through it. Two of them questioned its existence…So, I’m dubbing it the BIG trouble word for today…On to our cartoon and it’s solution…We’re aboard an AIRLINER, seated in FIRST CLASS. We see a couple, RICH, and his wife PAM…(short for PAMpered), a masseuse, and a female FLIGHT Attendant. Our dialogue is telling us that despite the seats being so expensive, they were worth every Penny …Pennies? HA! You can get your bottom DOLLAR there were no pennies on SCHEDULE here! These seats were definitely SKY HIGH…So, the answer to the question of what the couple could well afford? The SKY-HIGH PRICES! WAY TO GO, David…you always SOAR ABOVE the rest

Ok, eye candy. RICH, dressed in a black T-Shirt and jeans, holds a Champagne Flute, or perhaps an Aperitif flute. My uncertainty STEMS from the smaller size of it. He’s sporting a pony-TAIL,  a mustache and a soul patch…hAIRy Dude…PAMpered is dressed in Chartreuse and Burgundy…which attests to the fact that MONEY doesn’t necessarily buy Fashion CENTS, and two wrongs don’t make a right…Although two WRIGHTS did make an AIRPLANE! The masseuse is wearing either a sleeveless tank-top, with a sweater tied around his neck, or a hooded tank-top. We’re still looking for any CENTS of that HIGH Fashion…Lastly, our Flight Attendant, resplendent in a shade of blue, carries a steaming Lobster on a tray. We may have a winner…Her TASTE seems to be aboveBOARD…But I think I’m BOEING with RICH’s AIR…He has three piercings, and is wearing AIRrings in three different sizes…Personally? I’m not in YAW…and I’d have him TAKE OFF at least two of them…So, ThAIR you have it Folks! Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And get out there today and WING it! ✈️🙋🏻

TIKYT = KITTY

INAPO = PIANO

LFENUN = FUNNEL

NADETL = DENTAL

CARTOON ANSWER:

OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND WOULD PLAY MAID MARIAN TO ERROL’S ROBIN HOOD. SHE WAS – – –

KIYINFNLENL = IN LIKE FLYNN

Happy Tuesday, everyone! All of the clue words appeared to be old favorites at first, but a closer inspection revealed that FUNNEL is actually making its debut appearance this morning. It was used in a surprise answer of “FUNNEL” VISION on 1/23/15 but that doesn’t count. DENTAL took a few extra seconds to decipher which made it my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day.

The setting for today’s cartoon is an office where we see a man and a woman having a conversation. The characters don’t appear to be our normal Jumble cast and the cartoon sentence reveals that the woman is actually Olivia De Havilland. The man that is seated is drawn in the likeness of Jack Warner who was the president of Warner Brothers Studios during the golden age of Hollywood.

Mr. Warner is interested in casting Ms. Havilland as Maid Marian in a new movie called “The Adventures of Robin Hood”. He can be seen showing her a head shot of Errol Flynn who has already agreed to star in the film. Havilland and Flynn would go on to make nine films together and would eventually become one of Hollywood’s most popular romantic on-screen pairings. Ms. Havilland is still alive and just celebrated her 102nd birthday on July 1st!!!

The letter layout for the final solve contained 11-letters and kept the answer very well hidden. The visual clue of Errol brought FLYNN immediately to mind leaving IN and LIKE to be found shortly thereafter. If you weren’t quite sure who these characters were, you were most likely in for a very difficult solve. Have a terrific Tuesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

UDLEE = ELUDE

HENSE = SHEEN

VEEMRO = REMOVE

FIROPT = PROFIT

CARTOON ANSWER:

THE 2 WAS MUCH MORE EASYGOING THAN THE 3 BECAUSE THE 2 WAS – – –

EDEEENEMVPRT = EVEN-TEMPERED

Good Monday morning, everyone! All of the clue words that we see today are old favorites. SHEEN looked new to me once it was solved but a search revealed that it was last used on 10/08/15. PROFIT ended up being the oldest of the bunch with its last appearance on 10/02/14. We did see it used in a surprise answer of “TIDY PROFIT” on 6/27/16 so perhaps David only uses it on even-numbered years. Although all of our clue words well jumbled, they were all instantly visible so I’ll forgo choosing one as the most difficult anagram of the day. If you have a pick, be sure to let us know in the comments section down below.

Today’s cartoon was a break from the norm with the main characters being numbers instead of people. The banner overhead says “SUDOKU CHAMPIONSHIPS” and we see the numbers 1, 3, and 2 on the sidelines waiting to be played. The dialogue informs us that number 3 is anxious to get on the grid as he verbalizes his frustration with the pace at which the game is being played. Number 2 has a nonchalant attitude about the situation and states that “it will all work out.”

There were a couple of details in this piece that happened to catch my attention. We see the number 4 already on the board and its eyes are looking forward instead of back towards the commotion on the sideline. The second detail was more complex and left me a bit confused. If you look at the number 2, you’ll see that there is another number partially drawn to its right. Since Sudoku uses the numbers 1 through 9, I was unable to figure out what this other crooked number was. My best guess is that it’s part of the number 6 but the curve didn’t seem right. If you have a guess, be sure to let us know!

Like the clue words, the final solution was no trouble at all. The letter layout had five E’s which definitely caught my attention. The EN coupled together brought EVEN into view which left TEMPERED to be sussed out with minimal effort.

I’ve added a poll down below (👇) to see how many of you play the Sudoku. It’s a fun game but I prefer the other word puzzles like the crossword and word search. Have a marvelous Monday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

MSCOUT – CUSTOM

TALYNE – NEATLY

CARTOON ANSWER:  MANY OF THE COMMUTERS HEADING INTO THE STATION HAD COLDS.  TOGETHER THEY RODE THE – – –

CO   AT   OCA   RNH   HI  OO  =  “ACHOO-CHOO” TRAIN

Good Morning, Everyone!                🚉  A RAIL OF WOE?  🚉

🎶 Pardon me, Boy…Is that the Chattanooga CHOO CHOO?…Yes, yes track twenty-nine, Boy, you can gimme a shine? …Can you afford to board the Chattanooga CHOO CHOO? I’ve got my fare…And just a trifle to spare…🎶 “Chattanooga Choo Choo” – The Andrew Sisters – 1940’s

🚉 Commuting can be stressful to those who ride the rails,
You’re often crowded into cars…congestion’s what prevails.
You feel yourself within the CRUNCH, it’s usually the norm,
You go in dressed so NEATLY, but you easily transform.
Think wet NOODLE and you will get an idea of the woes…
A SHIFTY guy you’re watching just stands there and blows his nose.
While CUSTOM’s no eye contact, no matter your LOCALE,
Just being packed so tightly most times this does not allow…
So when cold season’s upon us and it now becomes our bane?
You’re destined to be boarding what we call “ACHOO-CHOO”TRAIN! 🚉

We’ve often spoken here about the various ways we all go about solving our puzzles. And there are many…No one way is correct, just as no other way is wrong…Lately, I’ve fallen into the habit of immediately ZEROING in on the cartoon and the answer CIRCLES first…So this morning, as soon as I saw our conductor, TYPHOID GARY, SNEEZING , and noted the quotation marks, I thought RAILS and CHOOs…”A” CHOOS of course, because of the sneezing, and Rails because you only see a Conductor on the Rail LINES, not the Subway TRAINS. A quick glance at the words, showed an “L” in 3 of our words, but just a sole “R”. Figuring I was on the right TRACK, my first STOP was CRUNCH…So FAR so good. But by then, with 🎶Chattanooga Choo Choo🎶 already playing in my head, I’m thinking..Choo Choo Rails? STOP, that’s not right…And then I realized what I needed was a different TRAIN of thought…Oh, I CAUGHT IT! CLANG! CLANG!! …Oh, wait…That was the Trolley…Anyway…With the solution now in hand, I turned to our words…Mascot? Hmm, a little TICK…ET’s CUSTOM. NEATLY, ✔️..LOCALE, ✔️, FISHY? Not to a “T”…So I stared for a second..SHIFTY, ✔️NOODLE, ✔️. Done! NEXT STOP? I checked and besides our words all being Sweet Repeats, I saw that two of them, NEATLY and LOCALE both previously appeared together, on March 26th of 2017. I just thought I’d EXPRESS that fact…So, just to RED CAP…I mean Recap…A TRAIN full of Sneezing Passengers? They’re riding the …“ACHOO-CHOO” TRAIN! Ding! Ding! Good one, David! RAIL good one!

Ok, eye candy…With all of the Passengers CONDUCTing themselves in pretty much the same manner, there’s not much to CHOOS from.. Crazy seeing all these people spreading germs like this though, right? Riding this LOCOmotive? I’m RAILy aFREIGHT of how this may TURN out…But besides the two other cars in the background, with little people visible through the windows, the scenery doesn’t give me much to CHOO on…I think I’ll just CHUG it off for today…So, There you have it Folks, the END OF THE LINE! Have a great day, Everyone! And remember…Being dishonest can only harm your STATION in life…Always looking over your SHOULDER, needing to cover your TRACKS all the TIME..Better to walk a straight LINE and EXPRESS yourself truthFULLy…Yea, That’s the TICKET! 🚉🙋🏻

NADKR – DRANK

PILEM – IMPEL

UNYIMT- MUTINY

YGLEAL – GALLEY

CARTOON ANSWER : THE LARGEST NEW ENGLAND STATE HAS 3,478 MILES OF COASTLINE BORDERING THE – – –

DAN   IL   MN   AE   =   “MAINE-LAND”

Good Morning, Everyone!         🌊 MAINE:  TOPIC OF DISCUSSION 🌊

🎶 If you’re fond of sand dunes and salty air…Quaint little villages here and there,
(You’re sure)..You’re sure to fall in love with OLD CAPE COD (CAPE COD, that OLD CAPE COD)…If you spend an evening you’ll want to stay, watching the moonlight on CAPE COD Bay….You’re sure to fall in love with OLD CAPE COD...🎶 “Old Cape Cod” – Patti Page – 1957

🌊. I’ve been to Maine a few times, but never quite like this,
I didn’t board a little boat and sit back quite in bliss…
I do remember sailing there, and fishing with delight,
And cooking in the GALLEY on those cozy star-filled nights…
We ate, we DRANK, we sang along with music that we knew,
And “Old Cape Cod” was always heard upon the ocean blue.
There was no cause for MUTINY, we travelled that whole summer…
IMPEL is causing me distress…the tense an awkward bummer…
The Coastline there’s quite beautiful, the sea food really grand,
I’d recommend to anyone a visit to “MAINE-LAND”! 🌊

With none of today’s words being new, there was no cause for pause…IMPEL, in fact, was seen here as recently as June 22nd. Finding ourselves on the waters surrounding MAINE’S COASTLINE, today we see a tourist couple, clad in Life Vests, being motored by a bearded Guide dressed in overalls. The dialogue and question of our cartoon serves up our solution on a silver platter…With the Guide mentioning the PINE TREE STATE, the question stating the LARGEST NEW ENGLAND STATE, and knowing that a COASTLINE borders LAND….Our solution? “MAINE-LAND”. Very clever, David…a TREEmendous pun!

Ok, eye candy…Admitting that I know very little about MAINE, I’m unable to identify the GRAY LIGHTHOUSE. There’s beautiful green landscaping, and grayed rock formations surrounding it. Looking to do some research, I read that there are 65 historical lighthouses, spread along MAINE’S Coastline. So I began looking at pictures…And here I am…STILL unable to identity our Lighthouse! And figuring that I may have already insulted the MAINERS amongst our readers by highlighting “Old Cape Cod” as my song choice, I’m going to stand down and defer to Jeff, or to you, our readers. If you can identify the Lighthouse in Jeff’s drawing, and would like to share it with us, please write in and do so….As for my song choice, when I think NEW ENGLAND, I think CAPE COD. Yes, I’m aware that it’s in Massachusetts, but I plead being New York born and bred; and having visited there many times, it’s a place near and dear to my heart. Oh, right, the candy…On the iPhone our woman is holding, Jeff’s showing the reflected image of the panel’s scene in miniature detail. A MINUTE ABSOLUTE! Kudos, Jeff. So, there you have it Folks, Done…Or today, perhaps somewhat undone! My apologies…Have a great day, Everyone! And I’m really hoping someone sheds some LIGHT on the LIGHTHOUSE dilemma! 🌊🙋🏻

LIDLR – DRILL

VABEO – ABOVE

DREEMY – REMEDY

GORNDA – DRAGON

CARTOON ANSWER:  PRICES AT THE AUCTION WERE GOING UP AND UP. THIS WOULD GO ON UNTIL THE – – –

DI   BE   ED   DRN =  “BIDDER” END

Good Morning, Everyone!         🎨 AT WHAT PRICE…GAME? 🎨

🎶 Well, the AUCTIONEER was goin’ ’bout a mile a minute, he was taking BIDS and callin’ them out loud…And I guess I was really gettin’ in it, ’cause I just shouted out above the crowd…And I said, “Hey pretty Lady! Won’t you gimme a sign? I’d give anything to make you mine, all mine, I’ll do your BIDDIN‘ and be at your beck and call.” Yeah I’ve never seen any anyone lookin’ so fine, Man I gotta have her, she’s a one of a kind…I’m goin’ once, goin’ twice, I’m sold…🎶 “Sold” – John Michael Montgomery 1995

🎨 To anyone who’s ever been, an Auction’s quite intense,
You know the DRILL, you bid and bid it’s all at your expense.
While moderation comes to mind, it’s not always the case,
The REMEDY for foolishness: Remembering your base…
To bid ABOVE your means can sometimes get you in a bind,
It all depends on who else might be bidding on your find.
A DRAGON breathing down your neck, you look at him and think,
“Will this person outbid me here”? Your hopes begin to sink…
You want this painting badly, but just how much can you spend?
You swallow hard, your paddle’s up…here’s to the “BIDDER” END! 🎨

Wrapping up another week of Jumble fun, today, AUCTIONS speak louder than words…I searched for our words, and as odd as it seems, I just couldn’t find REMEDY. GRANTed…WOOD I be wrong? EASELly…but what’s the SOLUTION? It may be new, it may nART…But I will put in a BID for it to be the SKETCHIEST of our words today. I saw Emery, and I just couldn’t BRUSH past it…You know how it is…You PICTURE something in your mind, and you may as well HANG IT UP…you’re stuck! But I blinked a few times, and it PAID off…Ok, our cartoon: Today, we find ourselves attending an ART AUCTION. Six patrons are in attendance, but our focus is only on two women clHAMMERING for attention, and holding paddles # 2 and 6. A BIDDING war’s in progress, and our ladies, named TINA and LOUISE are going at it TOOTH and nail…And how ironic! The painting at the center of the storm, is a replica of the FRAMEous AMERICAN GOTHIC. And the artist, GRANT WOOD, used his dentist Byron McKeeby, as his farmer! I just enjoy these quirky little things…The woman was his sister, Nan Wood Graham. And speaking of quirky…Tina and Louise? Tina Louise? Ginger GRANT on “Gilligan’s Island”? Now she was a work of ART, am I right? Beautiful woman. Again, this Six Degrees of Separation just amuses me…And whether or not Jeff was thinking along the same LINES as I? I GOTHIC think so! Anyway, our question is asking…With the price going up and up in this war, who’ll win the PADDLE? It’ll go on until the…”BIDDER” END! Good one, David! OIL I can say is you’re always right on the money!

Ok, eye candy…Where do I stART? Let’s BRUSH past the BACKGROUND players first…There are two gentlemen at center, one wearing a 10-Gallon hat, both experiencing cases of Sticker SHOCK! The look on their FACES is PRICEless! The other two male patrons are only seen from behind…Louise at left, looks annoyed, while Tina has a look of joyful animation…And our AUCTIONEER is nattily dressed in purple, as he recognizes another BID from #6. There’s no GAVEL in sight though, and I PAINTiently searched. And as always, there’s Jeff’s Weather Vane, with its’  requisite form of fowl. But the WORK of ART here today? Our PAINTING! With AMERICAN GOTHIC being the most parodied PAINTING in American Artwork, Jeff has definitely UPped the ante! I mean, CANVAS be? He’s drawn the two characters as David and himself…and re-named the PAINTING, “AMERICAN PUZZLERS“, with his signature showing! Now how cool is that? Depicting David as the male figure, (with perhaps a Nike logo on his bib-front), holding a WOOD – a GOLF CLUB instead of a pitchfork, Jeff, in turn, has taken on the persona of the female figure, sporting an Izod sweater instead of the apron. Ok, maybe he altered the characters’ features a little, but it sure looks like a SELF-PARODY! And the BACKGROUND of the PAINTING? It’s a Golf Course instead of the Farmhouse! Gotta hand it to you Jeff! PAL, ETTE’s truly a STROKE of Genius! So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And how about PAYING it forward today…TEXTURE loved ones! 🎨🙋🏻

MEHET = THEME

NICGL = CLING

QUICEL = CLIQUE

GYLXAA = GALAXY

CARTOON ANSWER:

THE BUFFALO NICKEL WAS REPLACED AFTER THE MINT APPROVED THE – – –

THECNCEGAAX = EXACT CHANGE

Happy Thursday, everyone! It looks like we have two new clue words in play this morning with THEME and CLIQUE making their debut. CLIQUE also ended up being the word to give me the longest pause making it my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. CLING has been used before and last made an appearance on 1/12/17 where it was jumbled the exact same way we see today.

Looking at today’s panel, I had an odd feeling that we saw a very similar cartoon not too long ago. A quick search revealed that on 5/17/18 we had a cartoon with the theme of a new quarter design. I distinctly remember that in that particular piece the production floor of the mint was visible and we saw workers making the coins. And the surprise answer of HEADQUARTERS was a real hoot!

Today we’re in an office where see a man giving a presentation at an easel while two other gentleman look on. At first I thought that the man standing was going to be a caricature of the actual creator of the coin but the dialogue quickly corrected that. We learn that a man named Felix Schlag had created the winning design for the new nickel which would replace the older buffalo nickel.

Schlag, a German born American sculptor, won a prize of $1,000 for his winning design on April 21, 1938. It is said that he used his prize money for the funeral of his wife, Anna. Schlag also won several other sculptural commissions and prizes with several of his works still visible in the Illinois area.

The letter layout kept the final answer well hidden with David trying to throw us off track by starting the anagram with THE. Noticing the X was the key to solving this one with EXACT coming instantly to mind. Crossing out the letters left CHANGE to quickly be found for the finish. This puzzle was on the easier side but it allowed me to learn a little bit of history about a coin we use all the time. Have a terrific Thursday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

TAYRP = PARTY

VIHEC = CHIVE

SESUVR = VERSUS

LIFELT = FILLET

CARTOON ANSWER:

AT ONE OUT AWAY FROM A PERFECT GAME, THE CROWD’S CHEERING REACHED A – – –

PRCHEVEFIT = FEVER PITCH

Good morning, Jumble friends, and happy Wednesday! The pace of new clue words has stalled a bit this month with David choosing to use old favorites instead. The first three words were fairly visible leaving FILLET as the only challenge. It also happens to be the oldest clue word of the group having last been used on 4/9/17. The only other interesting fact about today’s lineup is that CHIVE is jumbled the exact same way as the last time we saw it on 5/3/17.

The setting for today’s cartoon is a baseball stadium where the panel is serving a dual purpose. In the top half of the cartoon we see the infield portion of a baseball field where the game is being played while the bottom half serves as our vantage point which is high above in the announcers booth behind home plate. Jeff masterfully added a shadowed wave of fans between both halves to seamlessly blend them together.

The dialogue and sentence inform us that what we’re witnessing could be a perfect baseball game. The definition of a perfect game is defined by Major League Baseball as a game in which a pitcher (or combination of pitchers) pitches a victory that lasts a minimum of nine innings in which no opposing player reaches base. This feat has only been achieved by 23 pitchers in MLB history with the last perfect game being pitched by Félix Hernández of the Seattle Mariners on August 15, 2012.

One unique detail that is visible on both halves of this panel is the logo of the baseball team. We see it on the shirts of the announcers as well as on the jersey of the pitcher. On 7/31/18, I conducted a poll in which I asked visitors to this website what they thought the baseball team name was based upon this logo. The result was a tie between the Jumble City Diamonds and the Jumble City Gems. In an attempt to break this tie, I’ll run the poll again to see if we can find a winner!

The final solution to today’s game was a combination of two words that were both 5-letters each. I had a hunch as to what the answer was based upon the visual evidence within the cartoon. Looking at the letter layout, my suspicion was confirmed upon seeing FEVE in perfect reverse order. Have a wonderful Wednesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

GEEHD = HEDGE

BLUMME = MUMBLE

UBRMEM = BUMMER

CARTOON ANSWER:

WHEN THEY REPLACED ALL THE MATTRESSES AT THE HOTEL, IT WAS – – –

CRDHDMEBUE = MUCH “BEDDER”

Good Tuesday morning, everyone! The first two clue words were very obvious and didn’t cause me any hesitation. The last two took just a few seconds longer to decipher with MUMBLE being my choice as the hardest one. It’s also the oldest clue word in the lineup having last been used on 10/18/16 and it was jumbled in the exact same order we see today. I have a sneaking suspicion that some folks are going to sound it out as EMBLUM (EMBLEM) which will definitely cause problems during their final solve.

The setting for today’s cartoon is a small hotel room where the focus is on a mattress. Two men can be seen having a conversation while an older (or should I say well used) mattress leans against the door of the room just behind them. Jeff did a superb job detailing the differences between the two mattresses with the new one having a soft pillow top exterior that looks very inviting while the older one is discolored, torn, and sagging at the edges. If you look closely at the bottom left-hand corner of the old mattress, you can see a small tear where something is coming out of it. It better just be some stuffing that he was attempting to show us and not some creepy crawling critters — GROSS!

One of the main characters is a balding gentleman that appears to be a member of the hotel management. Since he’s not wearing a name tag he could quite possibly be the owner of the establishment. He concedes that he’s known about the mattress “issue” for some time and he’s happy that the problem has been resolved. The other gentleman appears to be a delivery person and his cap has four Z’s on the front. He is also wearing a pair of heavy-duty gloves which is a very good thing after moving that other disgusting excuse of a bed.

There were a few well placed details in and around the room that Mr. Knurek took the time to add which make his piece more visually appealing. The largest one was the artwork on the wall which features a relaxing scene of a flowing river along with a couple of trees. The peep-holes on the hotel room doors were also great additions along with the keycard readers. My favorite detail was the small tag on the new mattress that makes me want to go for a pair of scissors and clip it off. Loose tags on furniture and clothing really bug me and I always cut them off the second that I see one!

The letter layout of the final solution was 10-letters in length and kept the answer well hidden. Luckily, I saw MUCH after staring at the letters for a few seconds which made the rest of my work a piece of cake. BED came next leaving DER for the finish. The answer was such an original pun that it left me excited to see what they have waiting for us the rest of the week. Have a terrific Tuesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

GILOC = LOGIC

NODUW = WOUND

DIDYTO = ODDITY

WELOFL = FELLOW

CARTOON ANSWER:

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD’S “GRANDMOTHER” WAS IN A HURRY TO EAT AND – – –

LOIWNDODTFEW = WOLFED IT DOWN

Happy Monday, Jumble players! All of the clue words that we see this morning were old favorites. ODDITY was the only anagram that wasn’t immediately visible and took a few extra seconds to come into view. By using the “Y trick”, I placed the Y at the end of the word which made ODD jump out at me and the rest fell neatly into place. It’s my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day and it’s also the oldest word in the lineup with its last appearance on 5/21/17.

The setting for today’s cartoon features two characters sitting at a dining table. Noticing that there was a wolf dressed like a grandmother brought the fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood” instantly to mind. It’s been some time since I’ve heard this story but I remembered that the big bad wolf was always scheming ways to eat the basket of food that Little Red was bringing to her sickly grandmother, as well as devising ways to eat Little Red herself!

Little Red has noticed that her “grandmother” has a big appetite and watches as she gobbles down all the food on the plate. This little girl isn’t as naive as the wolf thinks and there’s one clue on the table that will give this imposter away. Grandmother is surely old-fashioned and would both eat like a civilized human being as well as set the table like one. The knife that is on the table has the blade facing away from the plate which is a table setting etiquette no-no. Grandmother would surely know to have that blade facing in to make it a proper setting thus giving her precious granddaughter proper table manners!

The final solve wasn’t difficult after noticing the two W’s in the layout. WOLF came to mind leaving the rest to be worked out after just a few seconds of staring at the remaining letters. Have a marvelous Monday and I’ll see you tomorrow!

TID   FER   SL   XEE   HI   PNI   =   EXPERT IN HIS FIELD

Good Morning, Everyone!    🌽 LET IT GROW, LET IT GROW, LET IT GROW! 🌽

🎶 The FARMER in the DELL, The FARMER in the DELL…Hi-ho, the Derry-o, The FARMER in the DELL…🎶 “The Farmer in the Dell”…Author Unknown –  1826

🌽 The Farmer in the Dell was heard, since a mere child was I,
Repeated it a zillion times, though never knowing why…
A “Dell” was used, because to me, a child not of corn…
The SYMBOL for a valley could have been an old shoe horn!
A city girl don’t FALTER, no TIRADE came from me,
I went along and sang the song, as happy as can be…
‘Cause a HYBRID crop, or rotate weren’t words I’d even know,
And as far as I cared EXCEED meant how far a ball I’d throw.
And I’d use a pen and PENCIL figuring a players’ stat…
That Farmers’ life was foreign still…I knew a glove and bat…
Then I grew and welcomed knowledge, other things became unveiled…
Yet to me ’twas always Baseball grew an EXPERT IN HIS FIELD!🌽

SOW…What have we EAR? Sunday Morn…Sunday CORN! Have these words made us Forlorn? I think today David’s given us the Cream of the CROP! TIRADE, SYMBOL, EXCEED, HYBRID...✔️✔️✔️✔️. A little falter at FALTER, and I don’t know why, but PENCIL just didn’t look WRITE! As for the cartoon…Again I have to say that David and Jeff FEED us these answers…I figured FIELD immediately…Location, location, location…and our question gave us “BEST“..I glanced at the words, saw the “X” guessed at EXPERTIN HIS just LINED UP behind it! A CORNucopia of Clues! Ok…Let’s PICK it apart…Oh, I forgot to mention that all of our words today are SWEET Repeats, with TIRADE coming in as the most recent at April 12th, and PENCIL bringing up the rear, at October 13th, 2016.

SOW…We’re in a FIELD, surrounded by the best CROP of CORN this side of the FARMER’S Market! Three FARMERS are shown…Two dressed for the FIELD, one dressed for the YIELD! The two at left, marveling at the aMAIZEing CROPS, are shown STALKing with the EXPERT, Mr. GREEN MEANS, asking how he manages to GROW such beautiful ROWS. GREEN MEANS, perhaps a tad smug at doing it so much BUTTER, is probably thinking..”YELLOW! I’m not going to give this information away for free…SHUCKS…I’ve invested the best EARS of my life to this”…And I suppose there is a KERNEL of truth to what he’s thinking…And he says..”Buy my Book”…Well he doesn’t actually say “Buy” the book, but that’s what I’m hEARing…SOW, in answer to what the FARMER was..(besides a POPular guy)…He was an…EXPERT IN HIS FIELD! Good one, David! MEALIE, it’s a good one!

Ok, eye candy. There’s really not much to FIELD. Green STALKS, ROWS graciously enPLOWED…The FARMER farthest left? A little HUSKy..The middle FARMER looking distinctly Amish, wouldn’t you say? The broad-brimmed hat, the buttoned-up shirt, the facial hair..NO LIGHT shown there though…A TRACTOR  way off in the distance…nothing DRIVING there either…Let’s just go with GREEN MEANS’ HAT. It sports a little STALK…I wonder if it’s stitched with SILK thread…So, There you have it, Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! I suddenly have an urge for a bowl of CORN FLAKES…Think that makes me a CEREAL killer? 🌽🙋🏻

Good Morning, Everyone!        ⛽️ ONE FOR OIL…,AND OIL FOR ONE ⛽️

🎶 There’s a million OIL RIGS pumping that black gold all over the world…Sheiks and cowboy billionaires, in limousines loaded with sparkling girls….But money can’t buy happiness, just listen to the stories they tell…All you need to really succeed in life is ONE GOOD WELL… It takes ONE GOOD WELL, deep and ever flowing, It takes ONE GOOD WELL, to draw from night and day…Pure and fine it’s yours and mine and it’s always enough…We got ONE GOOD WELL overflowing with everlasting love…🎶 “One Good Well” – Don Williams 1989

⛽️ I imagine they hold classes to instruct on how to drill,
And one ENROLLs to learn the ropes of tanks and pipes at will…
We see a rig and see it BOUNCE, how much do those things WEIGH?
I’m sure this work’s exhausting and these guys well earn their pay…
A man in my opinion’d be a DUNCE to act the fool,
And not work well within his crew and follow all the rules…
The work is hard, the pressure’s on, this job is sweat and toil…
And camaraderie excellence results in this “CREWED OIL“⛽️

Feeling an immediate CONNECTION with today’s words, and sensing something oddly familiar with WEIGH, my search to UNEARTH their former appearances brought me a pleasant surprise. In addition to being all Sweet Repeats, merely 35 days ago, on June 30th, not only was WEIGH one of our words, but the Puzzle that day featured DRILLING for OIL! How’s that for a CRUDE awakening? If I didn’t know better, I’d think this wHOLE thing was RIGged! But let’s face it Folks, aCRUDEing all these words, day after day…I can OILY imagine how hard it must be…So, if it bOILs down to us visiting the SPILLAGE PEOPLE again today?…WELL, you won’t get an AUGERment  from me! Finding ourselves standing somewhere out in a FIELDS of BEAMS, today we see three ROUGHNECKS and two DERRICKS on the JOB. A 5-man CREW. Considering that DRILLING for OIL must be BORING, the three guys shown here are said to be WELL-fitted for the job, and prove that they OIL CAN get along…In fact, one of the DERRICKS is shown saying…”They work WELL together”! Boy, some people WELL do anything to sell a pun..huh? Anyway, with our question asking what they DRILLED for together..”CREWED” OIL! Now how’s that for a pun? It’s OIL in the DELIVERY, Folks! Really good one, Dave! TOP of the LINE!

Ok, eye candy…Aside from all the blue shirts, and yellow gloves and hats, there isn’t a HOLE LOT to CONCENTRATE on…But one ROUGHNECK stands out from the QUEST…The one farthest right…For one thing, he’s making that Jeff move…You know the PROJECTing Reflecting? Whereby his tongue’s hanging out…Once again, I’m not sure if any LIP service is due…But see there in his hand, some sort of device? Is it a DUROMETER,  an ANEMOMETER, a FLOW METER…or a I’ll METER after work tonight? I have no idea! But if there’s anyone out there who’s FLUEnt on this? Feel free to DROP me a LINE…I’m always WELLing to learn something new…So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And OILways remember…OILS WELL, that ends WELL!...⛽️🙋🏻
