🎶 Hot town, SUMMER IN THE CITY…back of my neck gettin’ DIRTY and GRITTY…🎶 “Summer in the City” – The Lovin’ Spoonful 1966 https://tinyurl.com/2t28pw4e
🗑️ When it comes to New York City, the word THRONG carries some weight, From buildings that surround us…to crowds that won’t abate… To us there is no RIDDLE…no LEVEL we’ve not met, It’s big and loud and here and there a QUACK is what you’ll get But back in 1975 garbage bags blocked some traffic… A Sanitation strike occurred…and we saw IT “REEKED” HAVOC…🗑️
Ok…Today’s puzzle…A NYC Sanitation https://tinyurl.com/y24ayap3 Workers strike…And here’s the DIRT…I’ve lived in NY all my life. And yes, i’ve penned the above…but in the interest of full disclosure? I don’t remember a Sanitation strike in 1975. https://tinyurl.com/yzhdprh4 I lived in Brooklyn, a beautiful tree-lined neighborhood of one and two-family homes, where we practically gift-wrapped our trash. Plastic bags were unheard of…we used “garbage cans” to dispose of any refuse. It’s just the way it was…and for that matter, still is. So while I’d not REFUSE to go along with today’s puzzle, I’m not going to be TRASH, I mean rash, and offer any EMPTY promises as far as remembering any of this. Was it HAVOC in Manhattan? I’m sure it was. Did the uncollected garbage REEK? I’m sure it did…But for this NY’er? …I’m STRIKING out when it comes down to the nitty-GRITty…
Oh…some more full disclosure…Three of the Early Birds were WEIGH too quick to THROW OUT the words, IT REALLY STANK as today’s solve. And while I looked at the available circles, I thought to myself that it could be feasible, but it rang EMPTY for me. It just lacked a certain… je ne sais quoi…It was just too bland. No humor, no pun…nothing. So I suggested they CURB their enthusiasm and take another look. And no sooner had I GUTTERed, I mean uttered the words….when the idiom hit me. The dialogue: “SMELL” = REEK and “not cool” and “bumming me out” = WREAKING HAVOC https://tinyurl.com/46x6auzw …And that SETTLED it…When the Sanitation workers went on strike…IT “REEKED” HAVOC…And HAUL and HAUL we have another week’s worth of puzzles in the BAG…
Jeff’s💎Gems? It’s 1975, so appropriately we’re looking at hippies…And the guy atop the stairs CAN really attest to the stench…The flies above the rising fumes emanating from the very GRAPHIC trash piles are anODOR LICE, I mean nice touch…But if you look real closely at the tip of the cartoon on the bottom right hand side, you’ll see a rat eating pizza. In all fairness, “Pizza Rat” https://tinyurl.com/4hz49ekp didn’t become a thing in NYC until decades later…but it did garner a lot of attention…and sparked a whole LOT of TRASH talk…You can look it up…it’s all out there at your DISPOSAL…and in pretty GRAPHIC DETAIL I might add…
So…There you have it Folks…Done. Have a good one. Be well, be kind, stay safe…And we’ll PICK UP here again tomorrow…🗑️🙋🏻♀️

📰 The THRONG that formed trying to catch a glimpse of the QUACK magician with his inane “RIDDLE Show” reached a ridiculous LEVEL…and was written up in the paper as such: “The show?…IT WREAKED HAVOC for the local police”… 📰
🤦🏻♂️ There was a THRONG of ducks that day, “QUACK, quack” was all you heard, The noise LEVEL was off the charts…it bordered on absurd… It still remains a RIDDLE as to why so many swam, In the pond near his home that day…he thought he’d need a dam He went indoors and reached for something that was homeopathic… To try and get some relief from the din…’cause IT WREAKED HAVOC!🤦🏻♂️
👀 👃🏻When there’s garbage that’s left in the street, Won’t take long for the senses to meet… Sights and odors quite foul, And vermin on the prowl… As they rummage upon the concrete…👃🏻👀
🤷🏻♂️Trash removal we’ve come to expect, Til it’s not…and then things go unchecked… And with the tables turned, We find that we yearn… For the workers with new-found respect…🤷🏻♂️
🦟What we’re seeing today is a mess, And some people def under duress… ‘Cause there’s trash piled high, And there’s ants and there’s flies… And it’s causing some major distress…🦟
🗣️Sanitation men get a bad rap, Yet they’re out there each day hauling *+$[§… And if they choose to walk, People surely will balk… When we’re dealing with refuse and scrap…🗣️
💲So hats off to those who remove trash, Keeping streets free of the dirt and ash… ‘Cause it’s easy to see, Just where we all will be… If our cities don’t cough up the cash!💲

Not a good way to end the work week ! All the anagrams were right there for me with no problems ! But the jumble was not there at all ! I just couldn’t see it , although the only word that I pulled out that didn’t make the slightest difference was IT ! Oh well , IT was fun though ! I just didn’t see it at all ! Let’s cap the week tomorrow with a smooth Saturday jumble solve !!!!!

My blind solve “it really stank” was a good fit. Then you didn’t give me the letters. I got “reeked” but couldn’t find “havoc”. Tough Friday

Had a partial blind solve today…and all in all, a pretty easy day of it. Saw the “K” lurking in the anagrams, and SMELL already used in the cartoon…so thought REEKED might be part of the puzzle. And IT REEKED was surely the right path, no ?? Anyway, had to unscramble the anagrams for the last word. And yes, Angela, I remember reading about the sanitation strike way, way back, but can’t remember the year….70’s or 80’s for sure. Y’all stay cool out there in this heat. Have a great TGIF. Terry

Good morning. Redemption today after a terrible one yesterday. Pretty easy all around but no blind solve. Angela it seemed that you were a little annoyed about the rat eating the pizza slice of which even with a magnifying glass I couldn’t find it. Maybe because he was a rat for the mob and was in hiding. Until tomorrow take care.

I just saw the rat sitting by the trash can eating pizza , and then looked at Angela’s post about it ! Wow !i

Good Morning, Paul. The rat’s gray, so he’s blending in with the garbage can. He’s right next to the paper bag, directly below the handle of the can. It might be easier to see in the black and white version. Spread the picture to enlarge it…Take a look…and let me know if you spot it. Take care. 🐀🙋🏻♀️
I solved the anagrams but miscopied the letters from the riddle anagram so lacked the ‘I’ for the first word it in the cartoon solution . Kind of a disappointing Friday morning. Hopefully the rest of the day will go better. Chuck.

Toughie today, but managed to get “reeked” then getting “havoc” from the remaining letters. I don’t see “havoc” much in reading, mostly in the phrases “wreaking havoc” or “cause havoc.” It could be a good name for a small excitable dog!

IT was the obvious first word. The rest was unclear to me. I finally saw HAVOC, which left REEKED. It seems to me that REEKED should have quotes, like in your commentary, Angela.
Loading...
Dennis, I spoke with David yesterday, and he said REEKED was supposed to be printed with quotation marks, that he submitted it that way. That’s the whole pun…So, I’m with you. What happened…IDK🤷🏻♀️
Loading...
Went back to re-examine cartoon….saw the rat. Looked pretty satisfied. Terry

LOL! Who wouldn’t be…NY Pizza is the best! 😂🍕🙋🏻♀️

Thanks for clearing that up. Was going to mention it should be in quotes. I got it, it’s a clever one.

I can’t imagine anything worse than a garbage strike. Upon first glance I thought stink or stank would be in the answer but, lacking an s and n had to rethink that option. Once I saw reeked, havoc followed nicely. Happy Friday all! Betty

Right? Especially in the heat?! 😱…And the stink/stank? Just like the 3 Early Birds, Betty. The cartoon definitely alluded to it…Jeff did capture its ESSENCE! 👃🏻😂
