CARTOON ANSWER:

THEIR TEENAGE SON HAD BEEN OVERSLEEPING AND MISSING THE SCHOOL BUS – – –

ETT LO OA LAF = A LOT OF LATE

Happy Tuesday Jumble fans! The day after Labor Day is the traditional “back to school” day for the majority of the country. Not plugging in your cell phone the night before to make sure your alarm goes off is definitely not getting the school year started off on the right foot. Speaking of right foot, I got a kick out of seeing it so prominently displayed in today’s cartoon. Very subtle detail, Jumble Jeff!

There weren’t any new clue words to tell you about this morning. All of the scrambles were recycled repeats with the exception of WNROAD. The one that took me the longest to solve was WULALF, so it’ll be my pick for today’s hardest anagram. Seeing ALF in the latter part of the anagram reminded me of the TV show from the 80’s. ALF is an acronym meaning Alien Life Form, but I don’t recall knowing that while watching the show as a kid.

Today’s cartoon brings us to the bedroom of a teenager who is running late for school …. again. Thank goodness mom and dad were both home to get him up since his cell phone didn’t. They’re absolutely livid — with dad wagging his finger at him and mom yanking him out of bed by his left arm! His room was a disaster, and we see his dirty clothes on the floor and a bath towel in a ball over in the corner. All of the visual clues indicate he still has some growing up to do and personal responsibility to learn.

The final solve was an anagram consisting of 10-letters. LATE was easy to spot in the layout based on the clue of the cell phone alarm. The rest of the solve was figuring out the small words, which took no effort at all. It’s going to be a long day for this young man, that’s for sure. On to tomorrow! Until then, be well and enjoy the day. //Mike

  1. Not a bad one today. The answer took me a little longer because of the number of short words in it. Fun one though!
Been really hot in SoCal. Spent time with my kids and grand kids today, sitting on the patio by the pool. Good times!
Hope y’all are surviving wherever you are…..
    Party on

    • If I didn’t pick up on LATE, I’m sure it would have been a tougher solve. Those small words can be quite a challenge — especially when there are so many that can be made from the given letters! I’m happy to hear you got it in the end.

We were stuck inside repainting our dining room since my wife and I hardly get a day off together. Another check mark on our to-do list. Take care!

  2. This is new to me, I usually leave a comment on the page where you vote , so what’s the difference in these two areas , cause I like being able to reply to all the jumble players! This is so cool so ill put a LASSO around it , and move ONWARD, cause at 4:00 am I feel PETTY good !! I hope it’s not LAWFULY LATE ! This is awesome !! Everybody have a 🎼 Rumble in the Jumble 🎼 cause it’s all right by me !! Have a good day !!!!

    • Hi Jim. Good Morning! Welcome to the “other” 😂 side…It’s nice to see you here.. And wishing you a good day, too. ⏰🙋🏻‍♀️

    • This is the spot where most of the conversation happens, Jim. I left you quite a few replies over in the poll comments, but I don’t think you were getting notified of my responses. I’m glad you took the leap to the main page! WELCOME! 🙂

  3. Good Morning, Everyone…. 🚌 SCHOOL DAZE 🚌

🎶 WAKE UP Everybody, NO MORE SLEEPIN’ IN BED…No more backward thinkin time for thinkin ahead…The world has changed so very much from what it used to be…There is so much hatred, war an’ poverty…🎶 “Wake Up, Everybody” – Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes – featuring Teddy Pendergrass – 1975 https://tinyurl.com/pfrjwpse

⏰ The school bus rounds the corner, and he’s nowhere to be seen,
Our boy today is still in bed, lost in his sleepy dreams…
A battery’s gone dead again, no ONWARD movement here,
And Dad has had enough of it, it’s now too much to bear
They tried not to be PETTY, but both Mom and he agree,
That if they had a LASSO, maybe that would be the key…
But that might not be LAWFUL, dragging this kid out of bed,
Though time has come…the riot act to this kid need be read
He needs to get his act straight, or he’s def sealing his fate…
    This oversleeping’s gone too far…now it’s A LOT OF LATE…⏰ 🙋🏻‍♀️

    • This is so creative! Thank you for sharing your talent. Thanks to everyone for your fun comments. Wishing everyone a good day! ☀

      • Hi Jane. Thank you very much. It’s very kind of you…And I wish you a good day too! 🚌🙋🏻‍♀️

  4. 🤷🏻‍♂️ There was A LOT OF LATE of LASSO roping going on indoors, and after a sign was posted stating that it wasn’t LAWFUL, and that from now ONWARD fines would be issued, the members considered it all very PETTY …🤷🏻‍♂️

🤷🏻‍♀️ Some people acted PETTY, like a LASSO it went ‘round,
The talk of what the new rules brought, how LAWFUL they’d be bound…
Some swore that going ONWARD, they would fight it tooth and nail,
While others just resigned themselves…knowing a coup would fail
They need to get together…see there’s no room to berate…
‘Cause things can’t stay as they are now…it’s way A LOT OF LATE…🙎🏻‍♀️

  5. Tough puzzle for a blind solve this morning, even with the fairly obvious A LOT OF staring us in the face. Anagrams came easily for us, though LAWFUL was scrambled so much I had to re-scramble to examine AWFUL…then found the extra L went in front. Presto! For the final solution, had the four letters left over for LATE. Fairly cryptic for us this morning but makes sense after looking at it a few times. Angela a dear for sending a Hoagy Carmichael song my way…What a talent!!!

  6. The parents, they rant and berate
“Are you going to spend your life being late?”
    They chime in alarm –
“Too much sleep will do harm,
‘Cause you don’t know the time nor the date!”

    • Hi Helen…

🚌 While a teenager does love his sleep,
Obligations one still has to keep…
If the bus though is missed,
      And his parents get pissed?
Then trouble he’ll be in real deep! 🚌

  7. Good morning. I had to check my paper to make sure it was Tuesday because today was so easy. When I got to the cartoon answer after 15 seconds I went and gathered the letters to solve it. I’m happy to just get both answers most of the time. Until tomorrow stay well and stay safe.

    • Nicely done, Paul! ROAD being spelled out in ONWARD, and ALF in LAWFUL seemed to be a bit of misdirection, so I’m glad to hear you stayed on track for the win.

  8. A LOT OF LATE isn’t grammatical. LATE is an adjective, whereas if the preposition OF is followed by a single word, it has to be a noun. Maybe it’s LATTE misspelled? But you wouldn’t give that to a child. This opens the floodgates to a host of shadow solutions. A LOT OF TALE. The kid makes up all kinds of stories as to why he’s late to school a lot. A LOT TO LEAF. Maybe he’s turning over a new leaf. A TEA OF TOLL. Maybe’s he’s been drinking a lot of tea and it’s beginning to take its toll. A TOE TO FALL. His foot fell on the floor while he was sleeping. And so forth. Maybe they meant “a lot AS of late”, but for some reason the word AS got omitted. That problem can be fixed by putting circles in the square blanks for the second and third letters in LASSO.

    • Maybe a comma might have helped. A lot, of late. OF LATE, is a common phrase, and a very acceptable idiom. https://tinyurl.com/2trkm3w3 And the kid has been missing the bus A LOT. I do agree though, that “A lot, as of late” is easier on the ears. But as to the Latte reference? It’s not specified how old the teen is, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call him a child. He may very well be 15, 16, 17 years of age, and teenagers do drink lattes. Which opens up another can of worms though…would these said lattes be keeping him awake, way past a reasonable bedtime? And is that the cause of his eventual oversleeping? So much to consider….And yet, I read the question and the dialogue, glanced at the given circles, and immediately thought…A LOT OF LATE. I was drinking coffee at the time though…☕️🙋🏻‍♀️

  9. Quickly solved. However the solution needed a comma after LOT…” missing the bus a lot, of late”. Otherwise, LATE should have an S. I see that you, Angela, have also caught the error. In today’s world it’s not considered a grammatical error. So many use an adjective instead of an adverb as in He plays GOOD instead of WELL or the pronoun WHO instead of WHOM as in Who do you want as a goalie?
    I’m also guilty…
    Have a beautiful week.

    • Hi Christian…Grammar and punctuation can be tricky. Personally, I have an issue 😉 with apostrophes…but TBH, I’ve learned to live with it! Que será, será, I say! 😉 But yes, I think the solve might have been tweaked a tad today. But it’s still a witty, clever one…And as you mentioned, we’re all guilty at one time or another of fracturing the language…It should be our biggest problem in life, right? Wishing you a good one, Christian. Be well and stay safe out there…⏰🙋🏻‍♀️

  10. I too first thought awful but had that extra L left over. Other than that I was able to figure out the rest of the anagrams and cartoon answer without difficulty. I don’t get too excited over syntax or punctuation in the Jumble. I figure the creators are allowed some grammatical license. I was wondering if the teenager was texting late into the night and drained the phone’s battery in the process. Hope this school year will be a better one for children than the last one. Fingers crossed.

    • I’m with you, Betty — it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

Our school chose not to have the kids/faculty wear masks this year. I got them vaxed as soon as they said it was ok for kids to get it so all I can do is pray it’ll be ok. They even removed the remote learning option….. 😔

      • Mike what state are they not requiring masks? Most states they are required for students snd faculty. Just curious

        • Hi Marlene. I’m in NH, and there’s no blanket mask mandate. Our Governor created a matrix to help guide school districts with their mask policies, but refused to make it mandatory. Our school board voted to make it optional for now.

    • Hi Betty…I like your imaginative take on the cause of the drained battery…and the teenager’s subsequent drained energy…a clever observation.👏🏻👏🏻🙋🏻‍♀️

  11. I,too ,thought, awful had 2 L’s on the end,but after realizing the correct spelling, saw lawful was the correct anagram solution.Given the letters ,I thought the cartoon solution was a lot of times, rather than a lot of late, but soon sorted that out.Part of my problem today, was a routine blood test at 8AM that ended up w a trip to the ER until 2 this afternoon.Fortunatly,I’m back home and OK.
