  1. Happy Thursday everyone! We have a brand new clue word with today’s addition of GRIFT! It wasn’t all that HOARD to solve though. The only one to give me a hint of trouble was LUNACY, so it’ll be my pick for today’s hardest anagram. We’ve seen our final answer a couple of times before, but none of them were exact matches. The most recent was A FLIGHT OF “FANCY” on 02/05/10, which had FANCY in quotes and the A and OF were given to us. The other was on 06/06/81, and in that one the A and OF were also given to us, but there weren’t any quotes.

Today’s cartoon showed some TWA executives brainstorming ideas for a new travel class called First Class. Prior to 1955, all seating on passenger airlines was essentially Coach. On the tripod was a visual description of what the new seating arrangements would look like. First Class had a total of eight seats, while coach had 30. My favorite detail was the image of what looked like a bar behind the seats on First Class. The gentleman smoking and the old-timey model airplane on the conference table definitely gave the cartoon a dated feel.

The final solve was an anagram consisting of 13-letters. FLIGHT OF FANCY was my first guess, and writing out the clue letters confirmed my suspicion. My wife and I enjoyed a FLIGHT OF FANCY once. We were recently married, and the flight attendant said she noticed the brilliant shine of our wedding rings and asked us if we’d like to come to First Class once the plane took off. It should be noted that this all happened pre-9/11, so I’m not sure if they can still do nice things like that. Maybe one of our readers is a flight attendant and will let us know. On to tomorrow! Until then, be well and enjoy the day.

    • Hi Mike…We had this puzzle back on February 5th, 2010…The placement of the “A” was part of the question, not the answer, and David quoted the “FANCY”, but the gist is the same…
What the couple enjoyed when they were bumped to first class….A FLIGHT OF “FANCY”! ✈️🙋🏻‍♀️

    • Mike…I read your comments from last to first…so I’m just seeing that you’ve already mentioned this…Next time I’ll scroll down instead of up! 😉🙋🏻‍♀️

  3. Another Quickie for moi.
I saw Grift but wasn’t sure it was a word, but It worked.
Cartoon solution was easy just following the dialogue.
So this week keeps rolling along nicely….
Dodgers creaming Pitt, but no surprise. The best part is the giants lost today (finally!) so the Dodgers could gain a game on them in the standings. It’s sweaty armpit time, fans!
Weird weather in Lost Angeles today. Hard rain in the AM and thick clouds all dteay. Fall like weather. I would love some more!!!!!
Off for a short vacation tomorrow to celebrate something.

  4. Good Morning, Everyone… ✈️ FLYING HIGH OFF THE LOG ✈️

🎶 Oh, put me IN COACH – I’m ready to play today…Put me IN COACH – I’m ready to play today…Look at me, I can be Centerfield…🎶 “Centerfield” – John Fogerty 2020 https://tinyurl.com/y4yjx3rq *

✈️The year was 1955, and First-Class came aboard,
And more expensive as it was, some thought nothing to HOARD…
The extra money needed…it surely was no GRIFT,
Despite whispering of LUNACY, to most it was a gift…
(And here except for “flying”, a PUFFIN doesn’t fly,
    I’ll leave it on the runway…just a pun…but by and by…)
The airline offered comfort and for every Nick and Nancy…
Who looked to up the ante? Well they had their FLIGHT OF FANCY! ✈️

    * Ok so, yes, of COURSE there are plenty of songs out there directly dealing with flying…”Come Fly With Me” for one, “Leaving on a Jet Plane”, another. And there are many more. All great songs, and all worthy of honorable mention this morning…But I just couldn’t resist…This is what first started that old reel-to-reel going off in my head…so I just pushed the envelope and FLEW with it…It made me laugh! Have a good one…Be well, stay safe…and here’s to laughing…✈️🙋🏻‍♀️

  5. 🙇🏻‍♂️ Known to way too often give into a silly FLIGHT OF FANCY, like the LUNACY when he decided to HOARD pictures of every PUFFIN he’d see, it went beyond the pale when it was proven that he was guilty of GRIFT…🙇🏻‍♂️

🤷🏻‍♀️ She wanted a pet PUFFIN…she thought that they were cute,
She liked their very odd shaped bills…and their big heads to boot…
If up to her she’d HOARD them, so taken with this auk,
Her husband called it LUNACY, and he was quick to balk…
He told her it would be a GRIFT…declared it way too chancy…
If she thought she could pull this off…her latest FLIGHT OF FANCY! 🤷🏻‍♀️

  6. Our puzzle today?…No Fly-by-Night choice..It’s NATIONAL AVIATION DAY! ✈️🙋🏻‍♀️

  7. Third blind solve on the puzzle in a row for me. Come Fly With Me, indeed. Let’s hear some Sinatra. It seemed a Flight of Fancy or Lunacy that a Puffin could Grift money from folks by claiming to fly and then Hoard his ill gotten gains. Summer still sizzling on the Plains. Have a great day.

  8. Good morning. Another successful outcome but not an easy one. Lunacy I went back a second time to get. The cartoon answer took some time to finally come up with. After putting flight aside and viewing the remaining letters I finally got it. Really enjoyed your song choice Angela but at first I wondered what that had to do with flying. I read your post and you came up with a solid reason and I’m on your side 100%. Until tomorrow stay well and stay safe.

    • Good Morning, Paul. 100%! Thank you..It’s an honor having you in my corner. I’m glad you enjoyed it..Wishing you stay well and safe too, Paul. Have a good one…✈️🙋🏻‍♀️

      • Lol. Thanks for a good laugh. I’ll always back you up Angela. Well……….. Most of the time. Take care.

  9. It was your average, everyday solution to today’s puzzle, just the way authors designed it. Solved anagrams and then the puzzle. No blind solve so had to do anagrams….lucky that LUNACY appeared out of nowhere. And yes, there are oodles of songs out there and am glad Angela at least mentioned “Come Fly With Me”…honorable mention for sure.

    • Hi Terry…I think I went with a poor choice of words. (No pun intended)! “Come Fly With Me” is one of my all-time favorite songs. And Sinatra is my all-time favorite singer. So “least” would never be spoken of…if in another context. It’s just that “Centerfield” immediately popped into my head, and I couldn’t shake it. And it also reminded me of a puzzle from just about a year ago, last August 31st…https://tinyurl.com/43cuknhv So I just threw in the rosin bag 😉 and went with it…Bottom line?…Far from an honorable mention…I’d have to turn in my Italian Card if that ever got out! 😉

  10. No limerick today, jumblers. I have a full day of appointments etc. ahead. Angela, do you have anything? See you all tomorrow.

    • Hi Helen…Yes, I have a few. Here’s two…Enjoy your day. See you tomorrow…🙋🏻‍♀️

✈️ So First Class of course can’t be beat,
You relax in your comfortable seat…
      No rubbing of knees,
      “Yes, I’ll have champagne please…”
And flying Coach just can’t compete..✈️

✈️ If you’ve ever flown in First Class,
And seen the amenities en masse…
      It’s hard to go back
      To being a hack…
      Going Coach…no, I’ll give it a pass…✈️

      • Both very good Angela! The only time I have ever flown business class was one occasion on my return from a summer teaching stint in China. We were delayed a full day so were bumped up to business class when we finally got on the flight. The attention was superb as was the food and wine but unfortunately I was feeling a bit queasy that day so had nothing but sips of water much to the amazement of cabin staff. A 14 hr flight and nothing but a little water! Just my luck!

        • Tk you, Helen. Hopefully you’ll get future chances at the First Class experience…I’m rooting for you! Wishing you a good day, Helen…Be well. ✈️🙋🏻‍♀️

  11. Puffin stumped me but after looking that up the cartoon solution was a quick solve.I guess the day after my birthday wasn’t lucky for me.

  12. Hi Everyone –
I checked to make sure Grift was a word, though I know about grifters. Flight came to mind first and then the rest. I once was put in first class when a flight was cancelled. The main thing I remember is the bigger and heavier silverware.
    Happy belated birthday, Chuck.

    • That must have been exciting, Caroline! When we were bumped it was only a short flight so no meal was offered. I remember ordering a soda and the flight attendant came back with a Sprite and two small bottles of champagne! Enjoy the day! 🙂

  13. In my opinion, the inclusion of the second word in this Jumble is the third word. That is, including GRIFT in a Jumble was a LUNACY. When RFITG is fed into wordsmith.org, it says “no anagrams found”. So GRIFT is an obscure word. The letters in the final answer had me thinking of a FLY BY NIGHT but there were no anagrams containing NIGHT; the best I could do was FLYCAF OF NIGHT. Then I tried FLIGHT and I got the answer.

    • I’m glad to hear you got it in the end, Jim. Next time look for definitions in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. There is an entry for it there. Take care.

  14. I too wasn’t sure grift was a word though I am familiar with grifter and the cartoon answer was an easy solve. Cute story, Mike about your adventures in First Class. Personally I think flying is a bit uncivilized these days no matter where you sit. Wishing all of you fellow Jumblers a good day.

    • Thanks, Betty. The flight attendant left little cards on the seat with her name on it. I remember writing a nice email expressing my gratitude. 🙂

    • Betty…I was thinking the exact same thing when I was writing Limericks this morning..l🤦🏻‍♀️

✈️ While flying today’s definitely changed,
      With some passengers acting deranged…
      The puzzle today,
Takes us back to the day…
When things were so easily arranged…✈️
