CARTOON ANSWER:
WHILE VISITING FRANCE’S BRIE REGION, THEY HAD THEIR PHOTO TAKEN AND GOT TO – – –
AE SHE CS EY = SAY CHEESE
Happy Monday everyone! We’ve all said “Cheese!” when having our photo taken, but do you know the actual reason why we say it? The leading theory seems to be that the “Ch” sound causes us to clench our teeth and the long “ee” sound parts our lips to expose our pearly whites. Although the origin of the phrase remains a mystery, the first published instance of saying “Cheese” can be traced back to a newspaper article in Texas that appeared in The Big Spring Herald, October 1943, titled Need To Put On A Smile? Here’s How: Say ‘Cheese’:
“Now here’s something worth knowing. It’s a formula for smiling when you have your picture taken. It comes from former Ambassador Joseph E. Davies and is guaranteed to make you look pleasant no matter what you’re thinking. Mr. Davies disclosed the formula while having his own picture taken on the set of his “Mission to Moscow.” It’s simple. Just say “Cheese,” It’s an automatic smile. “I learned that from a politician,” Mr. Davies chuckled. “An astute politician, a very great politician. But, of course, I cannot tell you who he was…”
And just who was the famous politician that Ambassador Davies alluded to in his interview? He never spilled the details, but since he was a diplomat serving under President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the time, the leading hypothoswiss is that the “Great Sphinx” himself may have coined the phrase!
All of our anagrams were in alphabetical order this morning, but none of them returned as being new. I thought for a moment that GRAVE might be, but a little digging showed that it’s been used a couple of times each decade since the 60’s. The earliest instance I found came from a Valentine’s Day puzzle on 2/14/62 where it was scrambled as VARGE. None of the offerings stumped me, which is often the case when it comes to our first puzzle of the week.
Today’s cartoon transports us to the Brie region of France where we see three women visiting a cheese shop. Two of them are posing for a photo in front of a display case filled with cheese while the third woman takes the shot. I got a chuckle when noticing the cheese merchant, known as a fromager in France, flashing bunny ears as the photo was being taken. If you look closely at the screen of the phone you could see that Jumble Jeff included the jest in the frame as well. Grate job, Jeff!
The final solve was an anagram consisting of 9 letters. Four of them were vowels and five were consonants. I happened to solve this one without the aide of the clue letters which is referred to as a “blind solve.” Have a magnificent Monday everyone, and here’s hoping your day is as good as can brie!
I found the Fanny Pack to be a cute touch. After falling out of grace for a decade or two, it began creeping back into popularity late 2019…and now, in 2021, it’s being said that fanny packs are taking over once again. And as a woman, who tends to carry WHEY too much while traveling, and is always PURSEsuing a CHEDDAR alternative to a tote bag, I’m GRATEful! It makes carrying all our stuff easy, BRIEzy! And I like how our girl is wearing hers under her shirt and not over it. I think it looks much FETA that WHEY…Fashionable, trendy and convenient all in one. How CURD you go wrong? 🧀🙋🏻♀️
Good to see you back Mike! All these cheese comments are more than I camambear!
Some of them are pretty sharp, but not exactly cultured!
Have a great day, Mig. 🙂

After I dug a shallow GRAVE I gently SHOVEd my obnoxious VALLEY Boy COUSIN into the hole. As I looked down at him with a full shovel of dirt and my cellphone camera at the ready I said ‘SAY CHEESE”
I didn’t post it on FB because I didn’t want the police to see it….
Pretty simple J again today, nice easy fun!
Mig
First time that I’ve been able to cruise through entire Jumble at first glance. It would be a grave mistake for me to shove this small victory in the face of my cousin because he let’s me use his cabin in Valley, Nebraska. I did, however, take a selfie and prompted self to Say Cheese. Good morning from the windy Plains.
That’s a grate way to start the week, OO! 🙂
Hi Everyone – The answer came easily, but I had to back into both Grave and Cousin. Whey in the voting box made me smile.
Almost all the snow has melted here and I’m happy to see more wildlife.
What have you spotted, Caroline? Anything interesting?
A rabbit and birds, including an unusual bird I wasn’t able to identify. We like seeing our entertaining chipmunk out and about and knowing he/she made it through the winter. How about you, Mike?
I use an an app called “Merlin Bird ID” to help identify unusual birds, Caroline. You click attributes of the bird, like color and size, and it returns a list of birds that it’s likely to be. So easy, and the app is free!
Nothing too unusual here. I happened to spot a rather large raccoon walking across my lawn on Saturday evening. And we always have a rafter of Turkey’s throughout the day at our bird feeder. I noticed that one of the turkeys is limping, and it always follows far behind the pack and eats only after the others are through. It’s hard to watch, but I guess Mother Nature has her ways!
Thanks for the app tip!
Good Morning, Everyone. I hope this finds you well….🙋🏻♀️
🧀 They visit a Fromagerie, la femme she counts to three,
And each the happy COUSIN gets to pose amidst the Brie…
Vacationing in France they are, and there in the small VALLEY,
They took a tour of Cheese shops, with a number hard to tally
Determined as they were, you see, that if push came to SHOVE,
There’d never be a day too GRAVE to pass on what they loved…
Both connoisseurs of food and wine, they did just what they pleased
While jokingly l’homme too smiles…as our girls both SAY CHEESE! 🧀
🗣While visiting the dairy VALLEY with his COUSIN, he felt a strong SHOVE, and turned with a GRAVE expression to sarcastically SAY, “CHEESE, be careful” to the guy fooling around behind him…🗣
💔 The situation grew quite GRAVE, his mind gave him a SHOVE,
And thoughts COUSIN to anger overtook the ones of love…
The VALLEY Girl he trusted had forsaken him with ease…
He found the pictures of them…he and she and the ‘SAY CHEESE’…💔
A whey easy jumble today. I enjoyed the drawing and it’s answer that popped out before I saw all the letters.
Cheese

Anagrams were an instant solve and after realizing Brie was a kind of cheese, the cartoon solution,”Say cheese” was an instant blind solve for me as well.BTW My NCAA bracket is blown up along w a lot of other people’s with the number of double digit seeds beating the low single digit seeds, like Illinois and Ohio State, losing.Have a great start to the week.
Today’s puzzle was indeed easy Brie zy. Good way to begin the week.
BRIEzy! 👏🏻👏🏻! 🙋🏻♀️
Good one Betty, LOL!
Don’t you mean a GOUDA one? 😉🧀🙋🏻♀️
😂 No matter how you slice it!
LOL! 👏🏻👏🏻 You’re a regular cut up, Steve! 😂🙋🏻♀️
A bit cheesy but couldn’t resist. 🧀
Not at all, Betty…I disaBRIE! It’s a very SHARP comment! After all, Cheesy’s on the menu today! 😉🧀🙋🏻♀️
Oh Angela, I just read on CNN that our hero is going to memorialized in print: Coming in June – available on Amazon for pre-order: 🥁 … drum roll “Dr. Anthony Fauci — How a Boy from Brooklyn Became America’s Doctor”. 🦠 💉
Yes, I know! 👏🏻👏🏻. I’ve already ordered!!…And I love how they put Brooklyn in the title. It’s something to feel good about, and we definitely need it, especially after the fall from grace with Cuomo. That’s really thrown me for a loop, and I’d never have thought it to happen…But, love Dr Fauci, and love your emojis! Have a Gouda one, Betty. Be well and stay safe…😘🙋🏻♀️
You have a good day too, Miss Angela. I share your pain with the issues regarding our respective governors. Last year they were celebrated as heroes, this year not so much. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi!
Thanks, Betty. And yes, it’s so disheartening…And glory? I guess we were just so badly in need of heroes with all that’s been going on…It’s hard seeing someone get knocked down like this though…God knows we’re all human. 🙋🏻♀️
…And I knew that was you! 😉🙋🏻♀️
Betty…I was just thinking of my reply to you earlier about Cuomo. I hope my saying that I felt badly for him and that we’re all human isn’t construed as me turning a blind eye or condoning the behavior in any way. Have a good night…😘🙋🏻♀️
…And in QUESO you’re wondering…Yes, Shakespeare was a cheese lover…To BRIE or not to BRIE? One of his GRATEst lines…🧀🙋🏻♀️
Hi all – Just a quick pause to get COUSIN. The double letter trick made short work of VALLEY, and the answer could hardly have been more obvious.
One of the friends must be Michelle, because (with a little poetic license) they look like they “sont les beaus qui vont très bien ensemble.”
Good wishes to everyone.
“When push came to SHOVE, he found it was a GRAVE mistake to challenge his COUSIN to a duel in the VALLEY in more ways than one.”
Oops, forgot to shorten the link. Here’s one you can use, Angela or Mike, if you want to substitute it.

No need…I’ve always been a FONDUE Michelle! 🧀🤦🏻♀️
