  1. Good Morning, Everyone….🔨LOWE’S AND BEHOLD…IT’S HAMMER TIME! 🔨

🎶 Wanna do it all yourself….Don’t want anybody’s help…I know you’re TOUGH AS NAILS..Remember, girl, when all else fails….I, I wanna take care of you….🎶 “Take Care of You” – Collin Raye 2009 https://tinyurl.com/y43z82wl

🔨 So here we have a Carpenter…his business doing FLUSH,
He needs tools of high quality, jobs coming in a rush…
He never had a QUOTA, but now it seems work waits,
The quarantine and “no MINGLE” has seemed to cause a spate
The DIY’s were rampant, but too many had no clue,
And thinking there’d be STIGMA if a job they couldn’t do…
Just caused more work for themselves…now our guy is coming through
He’ll pick up where they left off, knowing what each job entails,
A new HAMMER now vital…and it must be TOUGH AS NAILS! 🔨

With four old words, and no new anagrams, setting up todays puzzle wasn’t all that much WORK…And the Early Birds HAMMERed through it all with ease…and got the JOB done in no time…So let’s see what’s in STORE for us this morning….

Most likely set in a major Hardware establishment, today we find two Jumble characters, Hy, our Carpenter, and Lowell, the stores employee discussing Hammers. And Hy and Lo both know their stuff. As Hy inspects a basic Claw Hammer, he’s heard asking Lo about it’s quality, and Lo is quick to tell him that he’s HIT the NAIL on the HEAD, and chosen the top of the line. Whether it’s true or not…well who knows, right? I mean let’s face it, you know Lo’s probably working on commission, so he’s mostly concerned with BANGING out sales…and he’s doing whatever it takes to NAIL one down. But then again, Hy don’t look like a TOOL, and I’m sure he’s PEEN around, so he probably has PICKED the best there is…and it looks like a sale is imminent. As long as that Hammer can get the TOUGHest jobs done…then Hy’s NAILed it…He’s getting himself one that’s TOUGH AS NAILS!

The eye candy? I’ll try to FLUSH it out…A back display at left, is showing two toilet seats hanging above a line of faucets and sprays. To the right of it, we see another unit, two-tiered, perhaps holding paint and brushes? I’m not really sure…so I’ll SHELF it…And directly behind Hy, I SAW two rotary blades, lying TABLE TOP. And in front of Hy, we see three other Hammers from which he could have PICKED. But it’s the cabinet behind Lo that’s grabbing my attention. There looks to be a ton of drawers…What’s in them? Nails? Couplings? Aerators? Utility Knifes? Hmm..I can’t PIN IT DOWN…Ah, SCREW it…I have no idea…

So, There you have it Folks, Done! Be well, stay safe, have a good day…And I’ll leave you with a little Carpentry humor…A guy with a Hammer held aloft was seen running through a Hardware store screaming as if there was an Emergency…He was heard saying…”This is not a DRILL, this is not a DRILL…”. Hmm…C’mon…you know you laughed…and you know I NAILed it! 🔨🙋🏻‍♀️

  2. …And today, in Jumble Trivia…August 17th, 2016. Our puzzle asked…”The Carpenter has had his hammer for so long because it was…” And the solve? TOUGH AS NAILS! 🔨🙋🏻‍♀️

  3. Good morning. Not much of a problem getting the words but took some time to get the cartoon answer. Angela, you surprised me on two things. Thought for sure you would pick “If I Had a Hammer” for the song choice by the carpenters. Also don’t quit you job for a chance at comedy. You might have followed Shecky Greene’s act a little to much. Your roll here is to good to trade. You’re a joy with Mike to look forward to every day. Thank you 🙏 for that. Until tomorrow stay well and stay safe.

    • LOL! Good Morning, Brooklyn…You always know how to make me laugh! And great song choice…but I was going for the TOUGH AS NAILS…and I like this guys voice. (Plus I think I’ve used your choice before)….But as for my comedy? C’mon…cut me some slack! “This is not a drill..this is not a drill”! That’s funny!!! 😂 Anyway…I don’t know about the Carpenters, but I’ve always loved Peter, Paul and Mary’s rendition. So here…just for you… https://tinyurl.com/ofekcc9. And thanks for the Shout Out. I look forward to seeing you here every day too…Have a good one, Paul. Be well and stay safe out there…🔨🙋🏻‍♀️

  4. I note that a possible alternative for GSATIM (STIGMA) is MISTAG, as in “The weary traveler in Mazatlan, Sin. in Mexico had to deal without most of his belongings because the airline MISTAGged his luggage as SIN, which is the airport code for Singapore.” The word appears in some dictionaries. If MISTAG is used instead of STIGMA, then the best cartoon solution appears to be LAUGH IN GISMO, which would mean that people laughed at the sales people, because they wanted the customers to buy a hammer with a lot of electronic GISMOs (gizmos) on it, when all they wanted was a simple iron-head manual hammer that we are all familiar with.

      • Now that’s funny Angela. You really got me to laugh because I felt the same way. You’re right about the people who sung the song. It’s amazing how much I’m wrong. Take care.

        • LOL! So you think there’s still hope for me on the comedy circuit? 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ Good to know! 😉 And too bad we can’t laugh together in person…maybe someday. As for the artists? You’re not wrong, Paul…you just have that selective hearing people talk about! You know…in one ear and out the other?…😂 And besides, you know I’m a music freak, so there’s always something playing around in my head…😉 Glad I gave you a laugh, Paul…and you take care too. 🔨🙋🏻‍♀️

      • Now that’s funny Angela. You really got me to laugh because I felt the same way. Your right about the people who sung the sung. It’s amazing how much I’m wrong. Take care.

        • Paul…looks like your comment came through twice. I did reply yo you…look under the thread where I first made the comment…🙋🏻‍♀️

  5. 🙋🏻‍♂️ Shaking off the fear of STIGMA, and feeling FLUSH and TOUGH AS NAILS, he disregarded the QUOTA he’d set for himself, and decided to MINGLE instead…🙋🏻‍♂️

💇🏻‍♀️ The boss gave them a QUOTA, for every comb and brush,
He didn’t look to fool around…produce or face the FLUSH…
And not wanting the STIGMA, they worked hard as could be,
There’d be no time to MINGLE…everything was one, two, three…
They all needed the money, so determined not to fail…
Their noses to the grindstone, they showed they were TOUGH AS NAILS 💇🏻‍♀️

    • Good Morning, Professor. I felt the same way. BANGed it out in no time…Have a good one. Be well and stay safe. 🔨🙋🏻‍♀️

    • Hi David…Good Morning to you and Daisy…So, I can never watch you speak without breaking out into the biggest grin. And I know I’ve told you that before, but it still holds true. Your enthusiasm is simply contagious! But 5 or 6 months? David…Let’s face it, it’s been like one longggggg month for all of us…we’re all burnt out. So what’s a repeat word amongst friends? I mean it’s not like anyone’s gonna mention it! 😂😂 And I hope you know we just speak about because it jars the memory, that’s all. Believe me, I’m sure I couldn’t accomplish in a month what you BANG out in a day. So please, know it’s just the nature of the beast…Thank you so much for thinking of us, and thank you even more for the job that you and Jeff do. It’s helped give us a little dose of sanity, with what we’re all dealing with. Be well, David, and stay safe 🙋🏻‍♀️

  6. Easy one today unlike yesterday where in spite of my best efforts I remained adrift in the Sea of Tranquility. Wishing all of you a good Saturday.

    • LOL! I did notice you were MIA! Good Morning, Betty. And sorry you found yourself ADRIFT y’day. But yes, today’s an easy, breezy one. Enjoy your day, Betty. Be well and stay safe out there. 🔨🙋🏻‍♀️

  7. No problem with TOAQU or SULHF today but MINGLE had a STIGMA on it and thus took a few moments longer for me to devine. I couldn’t reach a conclusion on the solution so I am not as tough as the rest of you!
Master’s weekend is always a treat, and the leaderboard is amazing. A repeat miracle win for El Tigre? We will see!

    • Perhaps some Divine Intervention would have helped! 😉Good Morning, Mig. Tiger going for the gold? Or shall I say the green? Yes, we shall see…Have a good one…Be well, stay safe…and enjoy the Masters. 🏌🏻‍♂️🙋🏻‍♀️

  8. Hi all – I got the words quickly, but gave up on the answer after about 15 minutes. Couldn’t see what the puzzle was trying to hint at, considered IN, ON, and AT for the two letter word (missing AS), and only saw THING, GHOST and SLANT for the five letter words. Never noticed the OUGH combo.

    Good wishes to everyone.

“He had taken his QUOTA of meetings, so there was no STIGMA in deciding to FLUSH the rest of the day and MINGLE with his friends.”

Too bad The Carpenters didn’t cover “If I Had A Hammer”, but while searching I did come across a tribute album to them titled “If I Were a Carpenter” (which contains neither song), so the time wasn’t wasted for me.

    • Hmm…I don’t get it. “IF I Were a Carpenter”? You mean other people wanted to be them? Why? We’re all HEW man beings, right? Shouldn’t be such a a difficult question…but considering, I have to AXE! 😂 Have a good one, Steve. Be well and stay safe out there…🔨🙋🏻‍♀️

  9. Angela–
I finally got a reply from the Austin paper yesterday afternoon. Here it is:

It took us a while to figure out what’s been going wrong, but we think we’ve found the problem. Sorry about that. I’m a puzzle fan and I know how annoying it is when the solutions are wrong.

Nice letter, but I wish he had given some clue as to what the problem was. Anyway, the Jumble this morning was the one with the carpenter, & the crossword and KenKen are correct also. Thanks for your help in solving this problem.

    • Hey Mike. Maybe who ever was working the “presses” got PLYed!…And he just SCREWed up. Who knows. You know they’re not gonna open up that DOOR and own up to whatever JAMB they got in…But at least it’s FIXED, and all back on an even PLANE. And you’re very welcome. Anytime. I was glad to help. Be well, Mike and stay safe out there…And don’t be such a stranger. 😉 🔨🙋🏻‍♀️

  10. I didn’t check in yesterday because I’m very stubborn and didn’t want to look up the answer. Finally threw in the towel last night. I remember how excited we were about the moon landing so figured I should know the answer. Well as Scarlett O’Hara said: “Tomorrow is another day”.

    • Hi Betty..I figured as much. We Italian women do tend to be stubborn at times…(You should hear the laughter at this end…my other needs to be careful he doesn’t choke)! 😂😂 But you weren’t alone, it stumped a good number of people…as you can SEA. And funny you mention Scarlet. You know she’s one of my all time favorite fictional characters. I just love her, and how she was always RHETTy with a quick comeback. My kind of woman! 😉 Wishing you a wonderful day, Betty. Be well and stay safe out there. 🔨🙋🏻‍♀️

  11. So I’ve been doing a lot of on line shopping with Walmart since the pandemic started. We don’t have any Walmarts here in NYC …it’s a union thing. But anyway, I haven’t been too keen on visiting CVS, or supermarkets since this whole thing started, so I’ve been doing on line shopping from a lot of places. Anyway, with Walmart’s, I’ve been buying stuff like shampoo, and laundry detergent, and crayons, and puzzle books, and paper plates, etc… A total plethora of stuff. Oh, and olives…I got a really good deal on olives. Anyway, I got an email from them this morning…you know the kind…”Here are some picks inspired by your shopping”…And this is what they’re offering…

1 – Personal care razors…I’ve never purchased those on line…
    2 – Car tires…???… I don’t even drive…
3 – Claritin…I do get bothered by pollen and ragweed at times…but again, I’ve never purchased anything of the sort on line…
4 – And lastly…Ghirardelli Chocolates. Ok, they got me here. I’m guilty….But I’ve never bought them from Walmart’s…Amazon, yes, but not Walmart’s. And that was only last year, at Christmas, because I was on a mission to get those hard to find ones called Peppermint Bark…(which they did have)

Anyway…it just makes you wonder. I know “they” trace our buying histories…but I don’t get it…Who’ve they gotten me confused with? A hairy Uber driver with allergies and a chocolate fetish? This can’t bode well for my future…I’m beginning to worry…🤦🏻‍♀️
