🪦 Grave Mistake

Today’s cartoon takes us into a cemetery after dark, where the new security guard is discovering that the overnight assignment comes with a few extra chills. Armed with a flashlight and more than a little uncertainty, he scans the rows of headstones while nervously calling out into the darkness. Between the spooky surroundings, the eerie silence, and a tombstone delivering a punchline of its own, this doesn’t look like the kind of job that helps you rest easy.

➤ NIGHT SHIFT NERVES

The security guard is standing in the cemetery holding a flashlight in his right hand. He is wearing a ball cap, pants, and a short-sleeve work shirt with a pocket on his left chest and a name tag on his right chest. An armband reading SECURITY is attached to his left upper sleeve. His eyes are wide, his mouth is open, and he appears nervous as he asks, “IS ANYONE THERE?”

➤ THE TOMBSTONE

The gravestone directly in front of the guard reads I TOLD YOU I WAS SICK I.M. DUNN. The flashlight beam stretches across the cemetery and lights part of the scene ahead of him. Several other gravestones appear throughout the background, with a fence running across the horizon behind them.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 14-letter anagram that solved into a 9 + 5 layout. I have to admit, the cartoon made this one a dead giveaway. One look and the answer practically rose from the grave. The clue words confirmed the same, allowing me to put it to rest in a hurry. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudge was the fact that the guard was literally working the SHIFT in a GRAVEYARD, which is commonly called a GRAVEYARD SHIFT. The scene reminded me of a cemetery-themed puzzle that Jumble Jeff drew back on April 18, 2017. 🌙 Click-To-Reveal Facts*: About Overnight Shifts

➤ What percentage of workers regularly work overnight hours?
About 15% of full-time U.S. workers work evening, night, rotating, or other non-daytime schedules. That works out to roughly one out of every seven workers, meaning millions of people are awake and on the job while most of the country is asleep.
SOURCE
➤ How much sleep do overnight workers typically lose?
Studies have found that night-shift workers often sleep 1 to 4 fewer hours per day than daytime workers. Even when given the same amount of time to rest, sleeping during daylight hours is usually shorter and lighter than sleeping at night.
SOURCE
➤ How much brighter is daylight than typical indoor lighting?
A sunny day can reach 10,000 to 100,000 lux of light, while many workplaces operate around 300 to 500 lux. That huge difference helps explain why overnight workers often have a harder time keeping their body clocks synchronized.
