🦙 UPHILL ASSIST

Today’s cartoon takes us high into the Andes where the air is thin, the mountains tower overhead, and the city sits far below in the distance. We encounter a traveler who has trekked quite a ways and is relieved to have had some help getting her oversized pack the rest of the way up the trail. Standing beside her is the animal that carried the load along the way. She offers her thanks, and the reply makes it clear that helping out is simply part of the routine. Up here, lending a hoof is never a big deal.

➤ THE TREKKER

She is wearing a poncho-style outer layer with decorative trim along the edges and a matching knit hat. Her hair appears pulled back into a ponytail. Fur-trimmed boots reach just below the knees. In her left hand she holds a large pack that stands nearly half her height.

➤ THE PACK CARRIER

The llama stands beside her with a thick coat and two front teeth visible.

➤ THE HIGH COUNTRY

Behind them the mountains rise sharply toward the clouds. Far below, a small city can be seen.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was an 11-letter anagram that solved into a 2 + “9” layout. With the quotation marks and today being Friday the 13th, it looked like it might take a while, but it actually came together pretty quickly. LLAMA was a given for the pack animal, and NO along with PROB were easy pulls from the remaining letters. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudge came from the wording of the cartoon sentence mentioning the South American pack animal. And the giant talking LLAMA was a big help too!

🎒 Click-To-Reveal Facts*: About Llamas

➤ How fast can llamas run?
Llamas can reach speeds of roughly 35–40 miles per hour in short bursts when escaping predators. Their normal walking pace is much slower, usually around 1–2 miles per hour, but when they sprint they can outrun the average human and approach the speed of a galloping horse or sprinting housecat.
SOURCE
➤ How tall do llamas typically get?
Most llamas grow to around 5.5 to 6 feet tall at the top of the head. Adult animals can weigh as much as 450 pounds, making them one of the larger domesticated animals traditionally used for carrying loads in mountainous regions.
SOURCE
➤ Do llamas have good vision?
Llamas have extremely wide panoramic vision, allowing them to see roughly 330 degrees around them without moving their heads. Because their eyes sit on the sides of their skull, they can easily detect predators while grazing, leaving only a small blind spot directly behind them.
