🪙 CHANGING CHANGE

Today’s cartoon shows us a pair of numismatists casually sorting through a collection of old coins. The young man on the left holds one between his fingers and asks if it might be from Germany. The man’s reply notes that Germany switched to the euro back in 1999 and wonders if the older currency might now carry some value. Even after the change, the former German money clearly made quite an impression that collectors still notice today.

➤ THE COLLECTORS

The young man is wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt. The older man has glasses, a goatee, and a collared shirt.

➤ THE COIN BOOKS

An open coin album sits on the table with pages that hold four coins each. The album they are looking at is resting on top of a closed one and a metal can filled with loose coins sits off to the side.

➤ THE BACKGROUND

On the wall behind them are two banknotes sharing the same frame. The upper note shows a woman with a “5” in the corner and the lower note shows a male portrait.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was an 11-letter anagram that solved into a 4 + 3 + 4 layout. If you were familiar with old German coins, this one probably came together pretty quickly. If not, like myself, it may have had you scratching your head for a few minutes before everything fell into place. ITS was my starting point for the three-letter word, and once those letters were set aside, the coin itself pointed straight to MARK, leaving the remaining letters to settle into LEFT. If this one slowed you down, the helpful visual was the Deutschmark coin the young man is holding between his fingers.
