🎃 THE CANDY CRASH!
Today’s cartoon finds three young trick-or-treaters still in their Halloween costumes, sprawled out after a serious candy binge. They barely had time to get through the door, let alone change clothes, before digging into their haul. Now their buckets are overturned, empty wrappers are scattered everywhere, and those once-eager candy collectors are looking a little worse for wear. It seems the real Halloween horror wasn’t lurking outside after all, but waiting at the bottom of their candy buckets!

➤ A NIGHTMARE ON CANDY STREET
Three trick-or-treaters are still wearing their costumes, and all three are clutching their stomachs. Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street is stretched out on the couch, with candy wrappers stuck to his bladed glove. On the floor, Ghostface from Scream wears a black cape, shorts, and Crocs, while Pennywise from It looks equally miserable in his clown costume.
➤ BUCKETS OF REGRET
Freddy is propped up on a pillow with one hand on his belly, while the other two sit on the floor surrounded by empty candy wrappers. One jack-o’-lantern bucket stands upright with a smiling face, while the overturned bucket has a frown.
🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was a 10-letter anagram that solved into a “6 – 4” layout. Our Halloween puzzle was a sweet success! Looking at the cartoon, it was obvious these three little goblins had eaten far too much candy. But with the answer in quotes, I didn’t even attempt a guess and decided to let the clue words do the work. FUTURE gave me a bit of a scare, but the other three solved straight down the line.
With all four clue words solved, the two L’s near the beginning of the layout caught my attention and brought FULL into view. Once those letters were crossed out, FRIGHT was easy enough to piece together to wrap this one up.
If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the trick-or-treaters’ dialogue suggesting they’d eaten a FRIGHTFUL amount of candy, while their scary costumes gave us FRIGHT and their stuffed bellies and empty candy wrappers gave us FULL.

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT
(Click phrase to reveal its origin)
PUMPKIN
Meaning: A large, round fruit belonging to the squash family, best known for its orange color and its association with autumn, Halloween, jack-o’-lanterns, and pumpkin pie.
So, where did it come from?
The word “pumpkin” has quite a history, and it all started with a melon! Its roots go back to the ancient Greek word pepon, meaning a large or ripe melon. The word traveled through French before reaching English as “pumpion” in the 1500s. Over time, that became the familiar “pumpkin” we use today.
Pumpkins are native to the Americas, where Indigenous peoples cultivated them thousands of years before Europeans arrived. And although pumpkins have become the face of Halloween, the tradition of carving jack-o’-lanterns actually came from Ireland and other parts of the British Isles, where people originally carved turnips and other root vegetables.
When Irish immigrants brought their Halloween traditions to America, they discovered pumpkins were larger, easier to carve, and much better suited for making spooky faces. The turnip eventually took a back seat, and the pumpkin became Halloween’s most recognizable symbol.
So this Halloween, when you see a glowing jack-o’-lantern, remember that its name came from an ancient word for melon, while the tradition itself began with a turnip!
