🎃 THE MANE EVENT

Today’s cartoon brings us to Sleepy Hollow, where the legendary Headless Horseman is enjoying a little relaxation before another spooky evening. He’s kicked back in his chair with his feet up on a stool, a warm fire nearby, and a bite to eat being served up to keep him fueled for the night ahead. But there’s no rush for any of that just yet. Even the most fearsome rider deserves a little downtime before another night on the job.

➤ A LITTLE BITE BEFORE THE FRIGHT

The woman wears a bonnet and a long house dress with lace trim around the collar and ruffled cuffs. She holds a plate with a chicken leg, offering the Horseman a bite before he leaves.

➤ GETTING AHEAD OF HIMSELF

The Horseman sits comfortably in a chair with his feet resting on a stool. He holds his jack-o’-lantern head in his right hand and gives a thumbs-up with his left. The schoolteacher reference is another nod to Mr. Dietz at Sleepy Hollow Middle School in Sleepy Hollow, New York. The puzzle creators visited the school and played games with his class. Mr. Dietz and his students have since been recurring references in puzzles featuring the Horseman.

➤ HOME IS WHERE THE HAUNT IS

A small round table beside the chair holds a mug and a pipe. To the left, logs burn in a stone fireplace with a pot hanging over the flames. Multi-pane windows behind the Horseman show the darkness outside.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 13-letter anagram that solved into a 4 + 3 + 2 + 4 layout. The solution to our last puzzle of the workweek, and the last one before Halloween, wasn’t too hard to carve out. Having seen the Headless Horseman in plenty of previous puzzles, I figured he’d have a hand in the answer, or maybe a head! Once the clue words were solved, with only a slight holdup on COHORT, HEAD was easy to spot, and WORK looked promising too. Crossing those letters out left the double F’s pointing toward OFF, and TO was all that remained to put the lid on this one.

If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the dialogue offering him a bite to eat before he would HEAD OFF TO WORK, along with the visual of the Horseman relaxing with his HEAD OFF his shoulders and resting in his lap.

🌖 That’s A Wrap!

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click word to reveal its origin)

NIGHTMARE

Meaning: A frightening or disturbing dream, or an experience so unpleasant that it feels like a bad dream.

So, where did it come from?
Here’s something you might not expect. The “mare” in nightmare has nothing to do with a horse! It comes from the Old English word mare, referring to an evil spirit believed to visit people while they slept.

Centuries ago, people sometimes woke up unable to move, with a terrifying sensation that something heavy was pressing against their chest. Without a scientific explanation, they believed a supernatural creature had entered their bedroom and was sitting on them. These frightening visitors were blamed for disturbing dreams and nighttime terror.

Today, we recognize many of those experiences as sleep paralysis, a condition in which someone briefly becomes conscious while their body is still unable to move. But the old supernatural explanation survived in the word nightmare.

Over time, the meaning shifted from the evil spirit itself to the frightening dreams it supposedly caused. Eventually, nightmare also became a way to describe any terrible experience.
