🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was a 15-letter anagram that solved into a “5 – 10” layout. Our first solve of November was a lengthy one, but nothing we couldn’t crack. With all the clue letters in front of me, the cartoon’s demolition derby theme made WRECK an immediate contender, and COLLECTION was easily sorted from the remaining letters to tow this one across the finish line.
If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were Grandpa’s RECOLLECTION of his derby days, with the visual of the battered helmet and crumpled bumper giving us WRECK, and his assortment of trophies and awards providing COLLECTION.

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT
(Click word to reveal its origin)
DERBY
Meaning: A competition or race, especially a horse race, or an event such as a demolition derby where drivers deliberately crash their cars into one another.
So, where did it come from?
The word “derby” has a rather surprising history that takes us back to 18th-century England. In 1780, Edward Smith-Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby, helped establish a prestigious horse race at Epsom Downs. According to a popular account, the Earl even won a coin toss against Sir Charles Bunbury to decide whose name the race would bear! The race became known as the Derby Stakes and eventually grew into one of the most famous horse races in the world.
As the race became more popular, the word derby began appearing in the names of other racing events, including America’s Kentucky Derby, first held in 1875. Over time, its meaning expanded beyond horse racing to include various competitions and contests.
By the 20th century, the name had found its way into the world of automobiles, where demolition derbies became popular attractions at fairs and racetracks. Instead of trying to cross the finish line first, drivers deliberately smash into one another, hoping to be the last car still running.
So a word that began with an English nobleman’s horse race eventually became associated with battered bumpers, crumpled fenders, and cars crashing into one another. Quite a journey from the racetrack to the junkyard!
