🕵️ FOR YOUR PIES ONLY

Today’s cartoon brings us to a lunch meeting between Agent 007 and his superior at MI6. The two are discussing the particulars of a recently completed mission involving plans for a secret weapon. Bond explains how he managed to pull off the assignment by using an unusual disguise and a bit of deception. His superior is clearly impressed by his agent’s ingenuity and congratulates him on a job well done. While such an assignment might prove difficult for most, for a seasoned secret agent like 007, it was hardly a recipe for trouble.

➤ LICENSED TO LUNCH

Agent 007 sits on the left with his hair slicked back, wearing a dark suit and tie. He holds a fork in his left hand with a carrot stuck on the end. He’s explaining how he carried out his latest mission by disguising himself as a chef and concealing the plans inside a carrot.

➤ THE MAN WHO PICKS UP THE TAB

Across from Bond sits his superior, also dressed in a suit, with neatly combed hair and a striped tie. He holds a cup of coffee in his left hand as he congratulates his agent on a job well done and offers to pick up the tab.

➤ PIE ANOTHER DAY

A chicken pot pie sits between the two men, with a slice removed. Behind them, a woman in a food service uniform stands at the counter, with more pies visible in the display case. And, of course, no James Bond lunch would be complete without his signature martini sitting within easy reach.

🧠 Final Solve

The final answer was a 9-letter anagram that solved into a 4 + 2 + “3” layout. This one seemed easy TUMMY! Reading the cartoon sentence and noticing the pie in the middle of the table immediately had me thinking of the familiar expression EASY AS PIE. With the final word of the solution in quotes, I knew I’d have a little more to chew on, but nothing too difficult to swallow. After thinking about it for a moment, with James Bond being one of the most famous spies in fiction, it wasn’t hard to swap PIE for “SPY” to bring this caper to a close.

If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were Bond’s description of how easily he completed his mission, giving us the familiar phrase EASY AS PIE, with the cartoon’s secret agent theme providing “SPY” for the wordplay finish.

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click word to reveal its origin)

RESTAURANT

Meaning: An establishment where meals are prepared and served to customers.

So, where did it come from?
Believe it or not, a restaurant wasn’t originally a place to sit down and order dinner. In 18th-century France, the word referred to a rich, nourishing broth believed to restore strength to people who were tired, weak, or recovering from illness. It came from the French verb restaurer, meaning to restore or refresh.

In 1765, a Parisian named Boulanger was said to have opened an establishment selling these restorative broths. Although the details of his story are disputed, specialized dining establishments serving such broths became increasingly popular in Paris. Unlike traditional inns and taverns, they offered customers greater freedom to choose what they wanted to eat.

By the late 1700s, the meaning had shifted from the restorative food itself to the establishments serving it. The French Revolution helped accelerate the growth of Parisian restaurants, and the word eventually spread into English. What began as a name for something intended to restore your strength became the familiar name for a place where people gather to enjoy a meal.
