🏔️ PEAK THEIR INTEREST

Today’s cartoon takes us to a classroom where geography is on the agenda and South America is getting all the attention. The teacher has assigned a research project, and her students waste no time staking their claims. One will be digging into an ancient civilization, another is going wild over the wildlife, and the third has his eyes set on a famous mountaintop marvel. With the students ready to climb into their assignments, this lesson is shaping up to cover quite a bit of ground.

➤ THE HEAD OF THE CLASS

The teacher stands at the front of the room with her hair in a bun, a stud earring, a scarf around her neck, and a short-sleeved top. She gestures toward the students as she gives them their geography assignment.

➤ THREE’S A CLASS

Three students sit at their desks, ready with their choices. The girl on the left picks the Incas, the boy in the middle chooses animals, and the boy on the right takes Machu Picchu. A large map of South America is shown in front of them, with the Andes running along its western side.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 13-letter anagram that solved into a 5 + 2 + 6 layout. Thursday’s puzzle certainly gave us a mountain to climb, and this was by far the hardest one I’ve tackled so far this month. Looking at the cartoon and reading the sentence, I figured the answer would have something to do with South America and the Andes Mountains, but I couldn’t find any solid footing. Looking at the letter layout, OF seemed like the only option, and with those letters available from the solved clue words, I crossed them out. Even with those letters eliminated, I still wasn’t seeing a clear path to the answer.

Back to the cartoon I went, searching for clues. Re-reading the sentence, the specific mention of the Andes had me thinking that mountains might be part of the answer. With that in mind, I returned to the remaining letters, where RANGE finally came into view, leaving TOPICS to cap this one off.

If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the students’ dialogue, with each choosing from a RANGE OF TOPICS to report on, as well as the visual of the shaded Andes Mountain RANGE on the map.

GEOGRAPHY

Meaning: Geography is the study of the Earth, including its mountains, oceans, landscapes, climates, and the people who inhabit it. It helps us understand how different places are connected and what makes each region unique.

So, where did it come from?
The word geography comes from the ancient Greek geōgraphia, meaning “description of the Earth.” It combines gē, meaning “Earth,” with graphein, meaning “to write or describe.” The Greek scholar Eratosthenes, who lived in the third century BC, is often credited with introducing the term.

But Eratosthenes did more than describe the world. More than 2,200 years ago, he used the angles of shadows cast by the midday sun in two Egyptian cities to calculate the Earth’s circumference. With little more than mathematics, observation, and a remarkable understanding of geometry, he arrived at an estimate surprisingly close to the measurement we use today.
