👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT
(Click phrase to reveal its origin)
PANTRY
Meaning: A cupboard or small room used for storing food, groceries, and kitchen supplies.
So, where did it come from?
The word pantry comes from the Old French paneterie, which traces back to pain, the French word for bread. In medieval households, especially castles and wealthy estates, the pantry wasn’t originally a place for storing every kind of food. It was specifically where bread was kept, prepared for serving, and distributed throughout the household.
The person responsible for overseeing the bread was known as a pantler, an important household servant who made sure this everyday necessity was properly managed. Over the centuries, pantries expanded beyond bread to include other foods and provisions. By the time the modern kitchen pantry became familiar, its original purpose had largely been forgotten, but its name still carried a little slice of medieval history.
