🛝 NO FREE RIDES

Today’s cartoon takes us to a playground where a new admission fee has turned a pleasant afternoon into quite the commotion. A mother arrives with her young family, only to discover that getting through the gate now comes with a price tag. Another parent is equally unhappy with the town’s decision, while the poor parks employee finds himself caught in the middle of the growing frustration. What was supposed to be fresh air and fun for the kids is quickly turning into a whole lot of trouble.

➤ THE PARENTS

A mother with her hair pulled back in a ponytail waits in line with her stroller, pointing at the $2 per visitor sign in disbelief. Her young daughter stands beside her holding a bunny toy, while the little boy in the stroller cries. Another parent behind them is equally upset, making her objections known.

➤ THE PARK ATTENDANT

The young attendant wears a visor, a Parks & Rec T-shirt, shorts, and a fanny pack. He acknowledges the complaints while explaining that he’s simply doing his job.

➤ THE PLAYGROUND

Behind the fence is a play structure with a peaked roof, a curved slide, and a walkway with railings. A row of balance platforms stands to the left, with trees lining the background beyond the perimeter fence.

🧠 Final Solve

The final answer was a 7-letter anagram that solved into a “3 – 4” layout. Our Hump Day puzzle wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. With ASPECT putting up quite a bit of resistance, it took a minute or two before all seven letters were ready for the final solve.

Looking at the cartoon and reading the sentence, CRYING SHAME was my first thought, but that was far too long for the answer spaces. Fortunately, the admission charge provided a pretty good clue. With the F up front and two E‘s near the end of the anagram, FEE was practically begging to be let in. That left ASCO to slide in for the finish.

If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the $2 admission fee causing quite a commotion and turning a pleasant afternoon at the park into a FIASCO, with the two-dollar charge giving us FEE for the punny payoff.

🌒 That’s A Wrap!

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click phrase to reveal its origin)

THE LAST STRAW

Meaning: The final small annoyance or problem that causes someone to lose patience after putting up with a series of frustrations.

So, where did it come from?
Picture a camel carrying a heavy load across the desert. More and more straw gets piled onto its back until one final piece causes the poor animal to collapse.

That’s the idea behind this centuries-old expression. The image of a camel being overwhelmed by one last bit of weight appeared in English writing by the 1700s, although earlier versions used different wording.

Eventually, the familiar phrase “the straw that broke the camel’s back” became a popular way of describing how one seemingly insignificant problem can push someone beyond their limit.

Over time, people shortened it to “the last straw.”

And sometimes, it’s not the size of the problem that matters. It’s how many came before it!
