🐸 UN-FROG-ETTABLE!

Today’s cartoon takes us to a cozy little table where a frog and a toad are sharing a snack and reminiscing about old times. During their conversation, Frog brings up the time he tried to teach Toad how to swim, and Toad not only remembers the occasion but can describe every detail, right down to where it all happened. Ten years may have passed since then, but not a single detail has slipped away. When it comes to remembering things, this toad sure has a memory that sticks!

➤ A FAMILIAR PAIR

Today’s cartoon appears to be inspired by the Frog and Toad children’s book series created by Arnold Lobel. The frog on the left is seated on a stool, holding a cookie in his left hand while bringing up an old swimming lesson with his cousin.

➤ A TOAD ON A TOADSTOOL

The toad is seated on a round toadstool. He not only remembers the swimming lesson but can recount the specific details, including that it was a sunny Tuesday, ten years ago, at Miss Mouse’s pond.

➤ A POND-SIDE VIEW

The two cousins are seated at a wooden table with three cookies on a plate. Wooden floorboards stretch beneath them, while a large window topped by a fan-shaped transom overlooks the pond, with a single bunch of cattails and bushes in the distance framing the scene.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 12-letter anagram that solved into a “4 – 2” + 6 layout. Our Tuesday puzzle was a little more difficult than what we usually encounter this early in the week. Once things got going, though, the solution would KERMIT a good clip. The cartoon and its accompanying sentence pointed toward something involving memory, although the quotation marks made an instant solve a little harder to come by. With all the clue words solved, the AC up front and the two L’s together brought RECALL to mind. Crossing those letters out left TOAD easy to spot, and adding AL finished the job. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the cousin remembering every detail of a swimming lesson from ten years ago, pointing to TOTAL RECALL, while the TOAD himself provided the wordplay.

🐸 Click-To-Reveal Facts*: Frogs, Toads & a Famous Friendship

Wood frogs have an extraordinary survival trick. During winter, much of their bodies can freeze, their hearts stop beating, and they stop breathing. When warmer weather returns, they thaw out and become active again.
SOURCE
➤ Do frogs drink water?
Not the way we do. Frogs absorb much of the water they need directly through their skin, especially through a specialized area on their underside called the drinking patch.

Some frogs can leap more than 20 times their own body length. For a six-foot-tall person, that would be like jumping more than 120 feet in a single bound!

➤ What’s the difference between a frog and a toad?
Toads generally have drier, bumpier skin and shorter hind legs, while frogs often have smoother, moister skin and longer legs built for jumping. But here’s the twist: toads are actually a type of frog!

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click phrase to reveal its origin)

TOADSTOOL

Meaning: A mushroom, especially one believed to be poisonous.

So where did it come from?

Ever wonder why a mushroom is called a toadstool? Was a toad really supposed to sit on it?

Well, that’s exactly the picture the name creates! The word goes back to Middle English and literally combines toad and stool, meaning a seat for a toad.

But why a toad?

For centuries, toads had a rather sinister reputation. People associated them with poison, witches, and magical potions. Mushrooms, especially those that seemed to mysteriously appear overnight in damp forests, were surrounded by many of the same superstitions. Some were poisonous, and people didn’t always know which ones were safe.

In old European folklore, toads and mushrooms became natural companions in the imagination. A broad mushroom cap looked like the perfect little seat for a squat, warty toad. The image was so memorable that it became part of the language.

The exact circumstances in which the name first arose aren’t known. The idea of a toad’s little seat is built right into the word, but nobody knows who first came up with it.

Despite its name, a toadstool isn’t a separate scientific kind of fungus. It’s simply a traditional name for a mushroom, often one considered poisonous.
