Today’s cartoon takes us out onto the golf course, where a couple in their cart has stopped to ask a fellow golfer how to reach the next hole. Their helpful guide points them toward the route ahead, and the husband seems to think he’s got it, although he doesn’t look entirely sure. His wife appreciates the assistance, but something tells me she may be hoping hubby remembers the route once they get back on their way. With a few twists and turns between them and the fourth hole, they’ll need to follow the directions down to the letter.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was a 6-letter anagram that solved into a 2 + 1 + 3 layout. Our first puzzle of the workweek was a gimme, but to check your solution, you still had to work your way through the clue words, which was no easy task. Reading the cartoon sentence and seeing the golfers getting directions made TO A TEE an easy guess. Once the clue words were solved, the remaining letters confirmed it, and we were off to the next hole.
If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the ranger’s detailed directions, which the couple would need to follow TO A T to get there, along with the visual of the couple in their golf cart, heading TO A TEE in order to continue their game.

STYMIED
Meaning: To be blocked, prevented from making progress, or unable to accomplish something.
So where did it come from?
The word has an interesting history in golf, dating back to the days when another player’s ball could become a serious obstacle on the putting green.
Under the old rules, if your opponent’s ball was sitting between yours and the hole, you generally had to play around it. You couldn’t simply ask for the ball to be moved. Depending on the situation, that might mean putting around the obstruction or attempting to chip your ball over it.
This situation was known as a “stymie,” a term that had been used in golf since the 1800s. The word itself has Scottish roots and was associated with someone who couldn’t see properly.
The stymie rule survived for generations before being eliminated from the Rules of Golf in 1952. By then, the word had already found its way into everyday conversation.
Today, being “stymied” has nothing to do with golf. Whether it’s a difficult problem, an unexpected obstacle, or a plan that simply won’t come together, the meaning remains much the same. Something is standing in your way.
