🖼️ THE ART OF GIVING
Today’s cartoon brings us into a living room where a couple is thrilled with the painting Grandpa has just given them. She tells him it’s always been her favorite, while her husband can’t thank him enough for such a wonderful gift. Grandpa is happy to see them enjoying it and adds that it’s now worth many times more than what they originally paid for it. Between its sentimental value and its soaring price tag, this is one family treasure that will just keep looking better with age.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was a 15-letter anagram that solved into a 4 + 11 layout. Sunday solves are usually longer than their weekday counterparts, so my eyes didn’t exactly bulge out when I saw the length of this one. Sometimes longer words jump out at you, while other times it can turn into a drawn-out process. APPRECIATED was fairly easy to spot this time around, and MUCH didn’t take much effort to complete the picture.
If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the couple getting all googly-eyed over their new painting, showing just how MUCH APPRECIATED Grandpa’s gift was. Meanwhile, Grandpa’s comment about its increased value showed just how MUCH APPRECIATED value the painting had gained.

🌑 That’s A Wrap!
👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT!
(Click word to reveal its origin)
HEIRLOOM
Meaning: Something special that has been passed down through generations, such as jewelry, furniture, or a treasured family possession.
So, where did it come from?
The word heirloom dates back to the early 1400s and combines two words: heir, meaning someone who inherits property, and loom, which originally meant a tool or household implement. That’s right, the word loom didn’t always refer specifically to a weaving machine.
In medieval England, an heirloom was a particular kind of property that passed along with a family estate. Certain household possessions, such as furniture, cupboards, and other valuable items, could be legally tied to the property and inherited along with it.
Here’s where it gets interesting. These weren’t necessarily treasured keepsakes. They were practical possessions, and their importance came from inheritance customs rather than family memories.
By the early 1600s, the meaning had expanded to include just about anything passed from one generation to the next. Over time, the word took on the sentimental meaning we recognize today.
And that’s what makes an heirloom so interesting. Its monetary value might rise or fall, but the family history attached to it can make it priceless.
