WELCOME BACK, PUZZLE PLAYERS!

🐶 A BONE TO PICK

Today’s cartoon shows us a pair of dogs having a little heart-to-heart over a bone. The female dog notices that her companion seems to have lost his usual enthusiasm for his favorite pastime. He’s looking down at the bone in his paws, clearly frustrated that something once so easy has now become a challenge. Getting older can be a tough thing to chew on, especially when the years start taking a bite out of what you used to do with ease.

🔎 Jumble Jeff’s Jems

➤ BOW-WOW BEAUTY

The smaller dog has a spotted body and wears a bow on top of her head, with a little curl of hair beneath it. She also has eyelashes and a collar featuring a small bone-shaped tag.

➤ BONE COLLECTOR

The larger dog is lying on a mat with long, floppy ears and sad, drooping eyes. He has a bone resting against his right paw while his left paw holds it securely in place. A few chew marks are visible along the bone.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 12-letter anagram that solved into a 7 + 2 + 3 layout. Our first Jumble of the weekend didn’t require too much digging! I didn’t have an immediate guess at the answer, but figured it would have something to do with the old dog’s frustration over his unfinished bone. Once all four clue words were solved, the G up front, followed by NAW near the end, brought GNAW into view. Adding ING made GNAWING clear, leaving AT HIM to fetch the finish. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the dialogue suggesting that his inability to do what he once could was GNAWING AT HIM, along with the visual of him GNAWING on a bone that still looked nearly untouched.

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click phrase to reveal its origin)

DOG-EAT-DOG WORLD

Meaning: A tough, competitive world where people are willing to do almost anything to get ahead, even at someone else’s expense.

We’ve all heard someone describe a tough, competitive situation as a “dog-eat-dog world.” But here’s the interesting part. The expression originally meant almost the exact opposite!

So where did it come from?
The ancient Romans had a saying, canis caninam non est, meaning “a dog does not eat dog.” The idea was that even dogs wouldn’t turn against their own kind, so why would people?

The Roman scholar Marcus Terentius Varro recorded the expression in his work De Lingua Latina during the first century BC. Varro was a Roman writer and scholar who studied language, agriculture, and the origins of everyday expressions. His writings preserved a saying that suggested dogs were less likely to turn against their own kind than people were.

The expression also appeared in the writings of the Roman philosopher and statesman Cicero, showing just how far back the idea goes. For the Romans, the point wasn’t that dogs were vicious. It was that even animals had limits to how badly they treated their own kind.

Over time, the original negative wording was lost. By the 19th century, English speakers were using “dog-eat-dog” to describe ruthless competition, where people would do almost anything to get ahead, even at someone else’s expense.
