WELCOME BACK,

PUZZLE PLAYERS!

🐑 ROOM WITH A EWE

Today’s cartoon takes us to the front desk of a lodging establishment, where we see a herding dog checking in for the week. With a flock of sheep to look after, he’s got plenty of work lined up. The proprietor has a great room waiting and is ready to hand over the key. It looks like this pup has found just the right place to hang his collar while tending to his woolly flock!

➤ A PAWS-ON CHECK-IN

The herding dog stands on his hind legs at the front desk, one paw resting on the counter as he tells the proprietor he’ll be staying for the week.

➤ THE KEY TO A GOOD STAY

The thick-mustached proprietor wears a wide-brimmed hat, a short-sleeved shirt with rolled cuffs, and suspenders. He’s holding out a room key attached to a bone-shaped tag.

➤ SIGN ON THE PAW-TED LINE

A guest register lies open on the counter, its pages marked with paw prints instead of signatures. Beyond the tied-back curtains, several sheep graze outside the window to complete the scene.

🧠 Final Solve

The final answer was a 13-letter anagram that solved into a “7” + 6 layout. Our second-to-last puzzle of the workweek certainly gave me something to chew on! Looking at the cartoon and reading the accompanying sentence, I had a sneaking suspicion the dog’s breed would play a part in the answer, although I couldn’t quite make out what kind of dog we were looking at. Once all the clue words were solved, the OLI near the end of the anagram pointed me toward COLLIE, and the remaining letters made “BOARDER” a walk in the park. If today’s puzzle had you chasing your tail, our nudges were the cartoon sentence identifying a herding dog, pointing us toward a BORDER COLLIE, with his weeklong stay giving us “BOARDER” for the wordplay to bring this one home.

🌒 That’s A Wrap!

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click phrase to reveal its origin)

ROOM AND BOARD

Meaning: A place to stay and meals provided as part of the arrangement, usually in exchange for payment.

So where did it come from?
Long before hotels offered room service and breakfast buffets, travelers often found lodging in private homes, inns, and boarding houses. But the word “board” had a meaning that might surprise you.

In medieval England, meals were commonly served on long wooden tables, sometimes made from boards resting on supports. The word “board” eventually became another way of referring to the dining table itself.

That’s also where expressions such as “boarding house” and “bed and board” come into the picture. A boarder wasn’t just renting a place to sleep. They were also paying for a seat at the table and regular meals.

By the late 1800s, “room and board” had become a familiar way of describing accommodations that included both lodging and meals, a meaning that continues to this day.
