🚗 HOOD WINKED
Today’s cartoon brings us into a garage where a man is determined to track down a mysterious noise his car is making. He’s got the hood up, a headlight strapped to his forehead, and enough tools spread across the fender to suggest he’s been at it for a while. His wife has come out to remind him that dinner is waiting, and even the dog looks ready for him to finally come inside. But with that pesky rattle still hanging over his head, he isn’t about to throw in the wrench just yet. At this point, getting him away from the engine might require a tow truck.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was a 7-letter anagram that solved into a single 7-letter layout. There was no tinkering required with this one. Although it wasn’t quite an instant solve, knowing we only had one more letter than our six-letter solves gave me confidence that this one would be a piece of cake to track down. With all the letters written out, the F and X were the giveaway, and FIXATED practically jumped off the page to finish the job.
If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the husband being so FIXATED on finding the source of the noise that even dinner couldn’t pull him away, while his promise to come inside after solving it showed exactly how FIXATED he had become. Although subtle, the pup was another clever clue, with his eyes FIXATED on his owner, but that one I’m sure was lost on the majority of solvers, including this one.

🥄 VIRAL RECIPE
It may sound like an odd combination, but tomato soup cake is an old-fashioned dessert that turns a can of condensed tomato soup into a moist, warmly spiced cake. Cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg take center stage, while raisins and walnuts add even more flavor and texture. The tomato soup mostly disappears into the background, making the surprise ingredient much harder to guess than you might expect.

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT
(Click phrase to reveal its origin)
THROW A WRENCH IN THE WORKS
Meaning: To throw a wrench in the works means to cause a problem that interferes with a plan or keeps something from working the way it should.
So, where did it come from?
The phrase started out a little differently. The older American expression was “throw a monkey wrench into the machinery,” and it dates back to at least the late 1800s.
One early example appeared in 1892, when an American newspaper described a political dispute by comparing it to someone throwing a monkey wrench into a threshing machine. The image was easy to understand. Toss a heavy tool into moving machinery and everything could come to a sudden stop.
Over time, the expression was shortened and changed. Americans began saying “throw a wrench in the works,” while the British developed “throw a spanner in the works.” A spanner is simply the British word for a wrench.
Nobody needs to actually toss a wrench anywhere these days. Anything that unexpectedly messes up a plan can throw a wrench in the works.
