WELCOME BACK, PUZZLE PLAYERS!

🎈 UP, UP AND AWAY

Today’s cartoon shows us a hot air balloon ride where a couple of politicians are busy doing what politicians do best. Their promises have the woman in the middle convinced that voters will eat it up, but the balloon operator has a much bigger concern. They’re already climbing higher than he’d like, and all that campaign talk certainly isn’t helping matters. At this rate, they may not need the burner to keep this trip going.

➤ PROMISES, PROMISES

The man wears a suit, striped tie and what appears to be a flag pin on his left lapel. The woman wears a blazer over a dark shirt as she gestures toward him. He’s busy making his pitch while she points out just how well that kind of talk tends to play with voters.

➤ RUNNING ON HIGH

The balloon operator is dressed in a T-shirt with one hand on the burner control as the flame blazes overhead. His concerned expression says plenty as he watches their altitude and tries to keep the ride from getting carried away.

➤ ABOVE AND BEYOND, LITERALLY

The three are riding in a woven basket with two sandbags hanging from the left side and ABOVE AND BEYOND TOUR printed across the front. Far below are roads, divided properties, a house and what appears to be a detached garage. Clouds sit along the horizon, while a bird can be seen off in the distance above the trees and the landscape curves away beneath them.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 12-letter anagram that solved into a 4 + 2 + 3 + 3 layout. Our Tuesday solve was a breeze! One look at the cartoon and the first words that came to mind were FULL OF HOT AIR. After a quick solve of the clue words, my hunch proved to be right on the money. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the operator suggesting that all the talking was making the balloon a little too FULL OF HOT AIR, while the politicians themselves gave us the other meaning, since being FULL OF HOT AIR seems to be an unofficial prerequisite for the position.

🎈 Click-To-Reveal Facts*: About Hot Air Balloon Rides

➤ How high do hot air balloon rides usually go?
Sightseeing balloons often fly relatively low so passengers can enjoy the view, although hot air balloons are capable of climbing thousands of feet higher when conditions and airspace allow.
SOURCE
➤ Why are hot air balloon rides usually so early in the morning?
Balloon pilots look for calm, stable conditions, and winds are often most favorable around sunrise. As the ground heats during the day, rising warm air can create thermals and less predictable conditions.
SOURCE
➤ Is it cold in a hot air balloon?
It can be cooler at altitude, but passengers don’t experience the same constant wind you’d feel in an open moving vehicle. A balloon travels with the surrounding air, and the powerful burner overhead provides plenty of heat when it’s firing.
SOURCE
➤ How does a hot air balloon actually come back down?
The pilot can reduce the amount of heat being added to the balloon and use the venting system to release hot air from the envelope. As the air inside cools and lift decreases, the balloon descends.
SOURCE
➤ Why is champagne associated with hot air balloon rides?
The tradition is tied to ballooning’s beginnings in 18th-century France. According to a longstanding legend, early balloonists gave champagne to startled farmers after landing in their fields. The National Balloon Museum notes that the story is part of ballooning lore but cannot be confirmed.

🌘 That’s A Wrap!

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click phrase to reveal its origin)

STUMP SPEECH

Meaning: A standard political speech that a candidate gives repeatedly while campaigning.

So, where did it come from?
We hear “stump speech” every election season, usually referring to the same basic speech a candidate gives over and over on the campaign trail. But why a stump?

Back in the 1800s, politicians often spoke to crowds in rural areas where there wasn’t exactly a stage waiting for them. What they did have were plenty of tree stumps, and a good-sized one made a pretty convenient platform. Candidates would stand on them to make their speeches, and before long, traveling around giving political speeches became known as “stumping.”

That also gave us “on the stump,” meaning a politician is out campaigning, and eventually “stump speech” became the name for the standard speech a candidate gives from stop to stop.
