WELCOME BACK, PUZZLE PLAYERS!

💦 WASH AND LEARN

Today’s cartoon takes us outside a building where a power washer is tackling some seriously oversized windows. With the machine humming and the wand blasting away at the second-story glass, years of grime don’t stand much of a chance. An onlooker is watching the transformation, and he can already see just how much better the place looks. Judging by the results, calling in some extra pressure might have been one of his better decisions.

➤ THE ONLOOKER

The man watching the work is dressed in a buttoned-up, collared short-sleeve shirt, pants, and shoes. He’s standing just off to the side, taking in the difference as the windows get a much-needed cleaning.

➤ UNDER PRESSURE

The worker is wearing a wide-brim hat with a chin strap, a short-sleeve shirt, pants, tall work boots, and a goatee. He has both hands on the long pressure-washing wand, steadying the barrel with his left while controlling the trigger with his right as a jet of water blasts from the tip.

➤ WINDOW DETAIL

The pressure washer sits on wheels with a tall handle, a hose running from the machine to the wand, and a little water dripping near one of the connections. Directly behind it are the building’s double entrance doors, and on the third story, you can see someone who has a striking resemblance to Bill Lumbergh from Office Space.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 16-letter anagram that solved into a 7 + 1 + 4 + 4 layout. Our Sunday solve felt like it was headed for a washout, with challenging clue words and a final solution that kept giving me the slip. Reading the cartoon sentence and taking in the scene, A seemed like the logical choice for the one-letter spot. With all the letters solved, and after what felt like an eternity staring at the puzzle, IDEA finally came into view. That led to GOOD, bringing CLEARLY into focus and finally wiping this one clean.

If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the visual of the windows looking much better, along with the building manager confirming the work was CLEARLY A GOOD IDEA, while the worker’s comment made it known that calling sooner would have been CLEARLY A GOOD IDEA, too.

CLICK-TO-REVEAL FACTS*: ABOUT WINDOWS & WASHING

➤ Is it actually better to wash windows on a cloudy day?
Yes. Direct sunlight can make cleaning solution dry too quickly, which can leave streaks behind. A cloudy or overcast day gives you more time to wipe or squeegee the glass clean.
SOURCE
➤ What’s the old trick for figuring out which side of a window has the streak?
Wipe one side using up-and-down strokes and the other using side-to-side strokes. When a streak shows up, its direction tells you which side of the glass needs another pass.
SOURCE
➤ Can a pressure washer actually break a window?
Yes. Too much pressure or the wrong technique can crack glass, loosen window putty, and damage frames. When pressure washing windows, lower pressure and the proper nozzle are important.

🥄 VIRAL RECIPE

Presidential Prune Whip

This old-fashioned dessert has presidential history behind it. Prune Whip was served in the White House during the Calvin Coolidge years, turning stewed prunes and whipped egg whites into a light, fluffy dessert that was once a familiar sight on American tables. It’s a vintage recipe that might bring back a few memories, or leave you wondering how it ever disappeared.

🌗 That’s A Wrap!

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click phrase to reveal its origin)

CRYSTAL CLEAR

Meaning: When something is crystal clear, there’s absolutely no doubt about it. It’s perfectly easy to see or understand. But the expression started with something much more literal: crystal itself.

So, where did it come from?
The word crystal comes through Latin and Greek from a word meaning ice. Ancient Greeks believed clear quartz was actually water that had frozen so completely it could never melt. Because high-quality crystal and quartz could be remarkably transparent, clear as crystal became a natural way to describe something perfectly clear.

The comparison goes back centuries. Shakespeare even used “clear as crystal” in Henry VI, Part 2, written around 1591. Over time, the wording flipped around, and crystal clear became the familiar expression we still use today.

So whether it’s a spotless window, an obvious answer or an idea that suddenly makes perfect sense, when there’s nothing clouding the view, it’s crystal clear.
