Today’s cartoon brings us into a hotel suite where a rock group has taken partying to a whole new level. The manager has walked in on the aftermath and is none too pleased, while the four band members look like they’ve had one very long night. The room is completely trashed with furniture, food, clothes, and just about everything else scattered from one end to the other. One member even has the nerve to point out the Do Not Disturb sign on the door, as if that little piece of cardboard is somehow going to save them now. After leaving this kind of destruction behind, it’s safe to say this group won’t be having an encore here anytime soon.

The hotel manager is just inside the room, sending the band packing. He’s wearing a sport coat, shirt and tie, pants and a belt, with sharply angled eyebrows, a scowl and a goatee around his mouth and chin.

🎸 ROUGH NIGHT ON TOUR

Four bandmates can technically be accounted for. The frontman, wearing a one-piece tracksuit with a circular snake emblem on the chest and somehow finishing the night with only one sneaker, is sitting on the floor speaking with the manager. A woman is sprawled out on the floor with a drumstick in hand, wearing a tank top, a tattoo around her upper right arm and an earring with three studs running up her ear. A third member is passed out on the mattress with a bottle in his hand and a fly buzzing above it, while the fourth is represented by a hand waving from behind the mattress.

🏨 SUITE DISASTER

The room is completely trashed. Going clockwise, there’s a guitar sticking through the wall, a record, a large splatter, the mattress tipped against the wall, a champagne bottle, an overturned bowl with spilled noodles, a bicycle wheel with liquid underneath it, a dented traffic cone and a room-service tray with partially eaten pizza. The “DO NOT DISTURB” sign hangs on Room 1954, a nod to the year Jumble began. To top it all off, a drumstick is shown lodged in the wall directly above the manager’s head.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 10-letter anagram that solved into a 6 + 4 layout. Our Hump Day puzzle CHORD not have been easier. When I came across “rock group” in the cartoon sentence, BAND immediately came to mind, and one look around the room gave me a good idea of where this one was headed. With all the clue words solved and THE given to us, BAND was quickly crossed out, leaving BANNED to bring this performance to a close.

PAINT THE TOWN RED

Meaning: To go out and have a wild, lively time, usually involving plenty of celebrating.

So, where did it come from?
One colorful story takes us to Melton Mowbray, England, in 1837. The notoriously rowdy Henry de La Poer Beresford, 3rd Marquess of Waterford, and a group of friends reportedly went on a drunken rampage through town after a night of partying.

According to the story, the group knocked over flowerpots, damaged property and, most famously, got hold of red paint and painted several doors, a tollgate and even a swan statue red.

It sounds like the perfect origin for “paint the town red,” but there’s a catch. Historians haven’t been able to prove that the expression actually came from Waterford’s rampage. The phrase didn’t begin appearing in print until decades later.

So the 1837 story may or may not have given us the phrase, but it certainly gave us one heck of an example of painting the town red.
