CARTOON ANSWER:

HE DECLINED

WELCOME BACK, PUZZLE PLAYERS!

🥾 SOLE SEARCHING

Today’s cartoon shows us a mountain road where a hiker is making his way down on foot. A passing driver has pulled over and offered him a lift, pointing out there’s still a long way to go before he reaches the bottom. Our hiker isn’t interested in taking the easy way out, though, and politely says no thanks. With his walking stick in hand, he seems content to keep putting one foot in front of the other. He may have plenty of ground to cover, but at this point he’s clearly taking it all in stride.

➤ ROUGH ROAD READY

The passing motorist is behind the wheel of a rugged vehicle with large tires. You can see the driver with his hands on the wheel, while the passenger leans out the window to ask the hiker if he’d like a ride.

➤ TAKING IT IN STRIDE

The hiker is dressed in a wide-brimmed hat, short-sleeved shirt, cargo shorts, long socks, and hiking boots. He has a thin mustache and sideburns, with a walking stick in his right hand as he politely refuses the ride.

➤ THE LONG WAY DOWN

The unpaved mountain road stretches down through the slopes and disappears into the distance. Pine trees and grassy areas line the route, with rolling hills farther below, clouds in the sky, and an eagle soaring overhead.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 10-letter anagram that solved into a 2 + 8 layout. Our first puzzle of the month went down with ease. Noticing that the hiker refused the ride and the way the cartoon sentence was phrased, HE seemed like the logical fit for the two-letter slot. PASSED and REFUSED were the first words that came to mind for the rest, but neither was long enough to get me all the way down the mountain.

With the clue words solved and HE crossed out, DECLINED was visible in the remaining letters, allowing me to walk away from this one a winner. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the dialogue and the visual: HE DECLINED the ride so HE DECLINED the mountain on his own.

🥾 Click-To-Reveal Facts*: About Hiking

➤ How many calories can hiking burn?
On average, walking burns roughly 100 calories per mile, while a pace of about 2.5 mph burns around 200–250 calories per hour. Hills, speed, and carrying a pack can push that higher.
SOURCE
➤ Do hikers actually go faster downhill than uphill?
Usually, but only to a point. A typical steep ascent can slow a hiker to around 1–1.5 mph, while downhill hiking can be closer to 2–2.5 mph. Once the descent gets very steep or rough, hikers often slow down again because footing becomes more difficult.
SOURCE
➤ What percentage of Americans go hiking?
About 1 in 5 Americans does. The Outdoor Industry Association reports that 63.4 million Americans, or 20.5% of the U.S. population age 6 and older, went hiking in 2024, making hiking one of the country’s most popular outdoor recreation activities.

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click phrase to reveal its origin)

THE OPEN ROAD

Meaning: The freedom of setting out on a journey, especially one without a fixed destination or too many restraints.

So, where did it come from?
The road has represented freedom and possibility for centuries, but “the open road” became especially powerful in American culture through Walt Whitman. In 1856, he published a poem originally called Poem of the Road. In 1867, it received the title Song of the Open Road.

Whitman’s road wasn’t simply a place to travel. It represented independence, possibility and choosing your own direction in life. During the 1850s, the open road was already an American symbol of progress, escape and the opportunity to discover oneself, and Whitman turned that idea into one of the central images of the poem.

That idea only grew stronger once automobiles arrived. By the 20th century, the open road had become tied to road trips, exploration and the freedom to simply get up and go. Long before Route 66 and the family station wagon, though, Whitman had already turned the road into something bigger than pavement.
