Today’s cartoon takes us on a fishing trip that seems to have drifted somewhere over the rainbow. With what looks like the Emerald City off in the distance, there’s plenty to suggest we’re not in Kansas anymore. We see a mustachioed fisherman trying his luck the old-fashioned way, while his witchy companion has a much different approach to landing the big one. With a wave of her hand, she has a fish flying through the air without so much as touching a rod or reel. When it comes to reeling in the catch of the day, she clearly has a few tricks up her sleeve.

The Wizard is doing things the old-fashioned way, sitting at the front of the boat with a rod and reel in hand. He’s turned his head to give the Wicked Witch a sideways glance after she’s found a much easier way.

➤ WITCH WAY DID IT GO?

The Wicked Witch is seated beside him with her pointed hat, nose, and nails, along with a wart on her chin. She raises her left hand, making a fish float out of the water and above the boat. The wide-eyed look on its face shows it’s just as surprised as anyone about how it got there.

➤ WE’RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE

The Oz references continue throughout the background. OZ appears on the bow of the boat, along with a winding Yellow Brick Road and the silhouetted spires of what looks like the Emerald City in the distance. A rainbow arches through the sky on the opposite side, putting this cartoon Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 10-letter anagram that solved into a 4 + 1 + 5 layout. There wasn’t much hocus-pocus needed to work out our Tuesday solve. With the Oz theme and the fish floating out of the water, CAST A SPELL instantly appeared before my very eyes. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the more subtle clue of the Wizard’s annoyance because she had the real powers to CAST A SPELL and he didn’t, while the much more obvious visual showed the witch doing exactly that, using her magic to CAST A SPELL.

CHARMED LIFE

Meaning: Someone who seems to have unusually good luck, almost as if trouble just passes them by.

So, where did it come from?
This one goes all the way back to Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Near the end of the play, Macbeth is feeling pretty confident. The witches have given him a prophecy that leads him to believe no man “born of woman” can kill him. So when Macduff comes after him, Macbeth boasts, “I bear a charmèd life.” In other words, he thinks his life is literally protected by a magical charm.

Well, that confidence doesn’t last long. Macduff tells him he was “from his mother’s womb untimely ripped” — essentially born by Caesarean delivery — and suddenly Macbeth realizes the witches’ words weren’t quite the guarantee he thought they were. So much for that charmed life.

More than 400 years later, we still use the phrase, only without the witchcraft. Someone living a charmed life simply seems unusually lucky, as though things always have a way of working out for them.
