🐴 STABLE RELATIONSHIP

Today’s cartoon takes us to an old Western town, where a pair of horses are sharing a moment together at the watering trough. After years of marriage, their romance clearly hasn’t ridden off into the sunset, as they still know exactly how to get each other’s hearts racing. A little sweet talk has them both looking as smitten as ever, proving there’s still plenty of giddy-up left in their romance. After all these years together, it’s clear neither one would want to be paired up with anyone else.

🔎 Jumble Jeff’s Jems

➤ THE GENTLEMAN

The lighter-colored horse is wearing a bridle with a bit in his mouth, along with a saddle and stirrups. A light blaze runs down the center of his face. He’s secured to the hitching rail as he turns toward his partner and delivers his affectionate line.

➤ HIS BETTER HALF

The darker-colored horse is also wearing a bridle and is secured beside him at the rail. Her eyelashes and lips distinguish her from her husband as she gazes his way and answers with a little affection of her own.

➤ OLD WEST BACKDROP

The background resembles a Western town, with two two-story buildings framing the scene. The building on the left has swinging saloon-style doors below and a curtained window with shutters above. The building on the right has a covered porch, with another shuttered and curtained window on the second floor. Beyond the buildings, flat-topped mesas rise from the open landscape.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 7-letter anagram that solved into a single 7-letter word layout. Our first puzzle of the week went at a pretty good clip once the clue words were solved. Had I noticed both horses secured to the rail, this one probably would have been an instant solve. Instead, I got caught up in their sweet exchange, allowing our biggest visual clue to trot right by me. With all the letters written out, the double H’s caught my eye to rein it all in.

If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the cartoon sentence telling us the horses had been married for years, or HITCHED, along with the visual of them HITCHED to the rail.

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click phrase to reveal its origin)

TIE THE KNOT

Meaning: To get married.

So, where did it come from?
Knots have been connected with marriage for centuries. One tradition often associated with the expression is handfasting, an old ceremony in which a couple joined hands and, in some versions, had them bound together with cord or ribbon as a symbol of their union.

The exact origin of the phrase is harder to pin down. “Tie the knot” was being used to mean marriage by the early 1700s, but the symbolism behind it is much older. For centuries, knots represented bonds that were meant to hold, making the image of tying a knot a natural metaphor for two people entering a lasting union.
