It’s certainly not your typical night out, but when the entertainment is this far from home, you’d expect the laughs to be on another level.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 14-letter anagram that solved into a 3 + 2 + 4 + 5 layout. Our Sunday puzzle was solved in what felt like warp speed. With the cartoon setting being outer space and one look at how the answer layout was arranged, OUT OF THIS WORLD was my first guess. Reading through the cartoon sentence, followed by a quick pass through the clue words, confirmed my hunch to bring this one in for a smooth landing.

If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the setting and the marquee. The comedy club is orbiting a planet in the vastness of space, quite literally putting it OUT OF THIS WORLD, while the marquee is advertising some pretty big names, giving us another hint that the entertainment could be described as OUT OF THIS WORLD good.

So, where did it come from?
This one has a great theatrical backstory. In the early 1700s, English playwright John Dennis invented a new way to create the sound of thunder onstage for his play Appius and Virginia. Unfortunately for Dennis, the play was a flop and quickly closed.

Not long afterward, Dennis attended a production of Macbeth and heard his thunder effect being used onstage. Furious that his invention had survived while his own play hadn’t, Dennis reportedly complained that the theater had “stolen my thunder.” The expression stuck, and more than 300 years later, we still use it whenever somebody takes another person’s moment in the spotlight.
