PUZZLE PLAYERS!

🃏 Decked Out

Today’s cartoon shows us a group of people playing poker, and they quickly realize their deck has seen far too many hands. As several of them inspect the battered cards and start looking for a replacement, one unusually quiet player seems perfectly content to let everyone else do the talking. Perhaps he knows those worn edges a little better than he is letting on. Either way, this deck has played its final hand and is ready to be dealt out of the game.

🔎 Jumble Jeff’s Jems

➤ THE POKER PLAYERS

Five poker players are gathered around a six sided table. In the back, Jumble Jeff is standing on the left wearing a Dave Hill T shirt. The man in the middle is wearing an ALL IN T shirt and holding a card with a bent corner. The man on the right says he will see if he has another deck. In the front, a man is seated on the left and says nothing, while the woman seated on the right says she has one in her car.

➤ THE TABLE AND THE BACKGROUND

On the table is a pile of worn playing cards, with the top card showing the ace of hearts and a tear running down the middle. In the center sits a holder filled with poker chips. A staircase appears in the background and leads to another level.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 9-letter anagram that solved into a single 9-letter layout. Lady Luck was on my side this morning. With a quick read of the cartoon and sentence, it was obvious that the answer would have something to do with playing cards, but the exact solution remained just out of reach. Once all four clue words had been dealt with, CARD was clearly visible in the anagram. The wording of the sentence also made an -ED ending seem likely, leaving the letters S, D, and I to make DIS one done. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the worn condition of the playing cards and the group’s decision to replace the deck, giving us CARD for the wordplay and DISCARDED for what they agreed should happen to it.

🃏 CLICK-TO-REVEAL FACTS*: ABOUT PLAYING CARDS

➤ Who are the four kings supposedly meant to represent?
In the traditional French Paris-pattern deck, the King of Spades is David, the King of Hearts is Charlemagne, the King of Diamonds is Julius Caesar, and the King of Clubs is Alexander the Great. Standard English-pattern court cards are not officially believed to represent particular people.
SOURCE
➤ Who are the four queens supposedly meant to represent?
In the Paris-pattern deck, the Queen of Spades is Pallas Athena, the Queen of Hearts is Judith, the Queen of Diamonds is Rachel, and the Queen of Clubs is Argine. Argine may be an anagram of regina, the Latin word for queen.
SOURCE
➤ What do the four playing-card suits supposedly represent?
One traditional interpretation connects the suits with social classes: hearts represent the clergy, spades represent warriors or nobility, diamonds represent merchants, and clubs represent peasants or agriculture. These meanings are historical associations rather than universal rules.
SOURCE
➤ How many possible arrangements are there for a deck of cards?
A standard 52-card deck can be arranged in 52 factorial, or approximately 8 × 10⁶⁷ different orders. Written out, that number is an 8 followed by 67 zeros. The number of possible arrangements is so enormous that a thoroughly shuffled deck will very likely produce an order that has never appeared before.
SOURCE
➤ How many shuffles does it take to mix a deck?
Mathematical research commonly finds that about seven ordinary shuffles are needed to mix a standard 52-card deck reasonably well. Fewer shuffles can leave noticeable traces of the deck’s original order.
