🙏 CHURCH SEARCH

Today’s cartoon takes us inside a church where the elders are reviewing candidates and discussing what kind of leadership could help breathe new life into the congregation. As they look over the applications, the group seems to agree that a younger minister could bring fresh energy, connect with newer generations, and give the church a welcome lift. With hopeful faces around the table and several promising possibilities in front of them, it’s clear they’re looking ahead to the future with optimism.

➤ THE SEARCH COMMITTEE

Four church elders are seated in chairs around a square table. The two in the back are reviewing applications, each with pages spread out in front of them, while the two in the foreground are talking about what they hope a new pastor might bring to the church. The applications are filled with squiggle lines for text.

➤ THE PULPIT PICTURE

In the background stands a podium style pulpit with a microphone on top, set on a slightly raised platform. Behind it are two tall stained glass windows.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 14-letter anagram that solved into a 7 + “7” layout. Holy smokes, today’s solve had me humbled. After looking over the cartoon, reading the sentence, and noticing that the second word was in quotes, I still had no idea where this one was headed. The clue words were especially difficult this Sunday, and once they were finally solved, the remaining letters looked like little more than a scrambled mess. It was time to put on my thinking cap and do a little praying of my own. After staring at the layout for what seemed like an eternity, PASTORS finally rose from the letters. With those crossed out, GREENER still took some work but eventually came into view to bring this challenging solve to a welcome close. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were quite subtle. The elders were searching for a new minister, giving us PASTORS, while their preference for a younger candidate pointed toward someone GREENER. The quotation marks around “PASTORS” supplied the wordplay for the familiar idiom GREENER PASTURES, meaning a new, better, or more promising situation than the one left behind.
