🌊 A CURRENT DEVELOPMENT
Today’s cartoon shows us a group of scientists gathered around blueprints for a new vessel. One member has just arrived after learning the good news that their grant has been approved, giving his colleague the perfect chance to remind him how close he came to never sending in the paperwork. With the funding secured, the group is eager to stop planning and start building. In the end, it was the application they almost held back that helped the project get underway.

➤ GRANT IT LIKE IT’S HOT
The first scientist is wearing a skullcap style hat with sideburns peeking out and a goatee. He has on a short sleeve shirt and pants, and he is holding his cell phone in his right hand as he shares the good news. The middle scientist has long hair, a full beard and mustache, square frame glasses, and a short sleeve V-neck shirt. The woman has her hair pulled back in a ponytail and is wearing a short sleeve shirt while holding a model of the submarine.
➤ DEEP THINKING
The group is gathered around a square table covered with a blueprint for the underwater vessel they have been planning. The drawings appear to show the craft from multiple angles.
➤ INSPIRATION
In the background is a poster for “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.”
🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was a 10-letter anagram that solved into a single word with a “3-7” layout. Our first puzzle of the weekend went down with ease. With an underwater science team featured in the cartoon, I knew the answer would somehow have to do with water, but the hyphenated layout kept me from venturing an early guess. Once the clue words were solved, the three S’s and the I helped MISSION surface, while SUB flowed effortlessly from the remaining letters to finish this one off. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the middle scientist reminding his colleague that he nearly did not turn in the application, pointing us toward a SUBMISSION, along with the model submarine, the vessel schematics, and the “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” poster supplying SUB for the wordplay answer “SUB-MISSION.”
