WELCOME BACK,

PUZZLE PLAYERS!

➗ Greater Good

Today’s cartoon takes us to a classroom where a teacher is helping her students make sense of one of math’s most confusing symbols. After one student asks how he’s supposed to tell the difference between them, she offers a simple way to picture it, explaining that the smaller number always wants to eat the bigger one. Before long, another student starts putting the idea together, realizing which number belongs on which side. Sometimes a simple way to remember something is all you need.

➤ CHOMPING ALONG

The teacher stands at the front of the classroom with short hair, wearing a short-sleeved V-neck shirt. Using her right hand, she makes a playful chomping motion with her thumb and index finger to show that the smaller number “eats” the bigger number when comparing values.

➤ MATH CLASS IN SESSION

Four students are seated at their desks. Two are simply facing forward and listening, while the other two join the discussion by asking and answering questions as they work through the lesson together.

➤ LESSON ON THE BOARD

A large classroom board displays both greater-than and less-than symbols along with example math problems, including 9 > 5 and 1 < 5.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 10-letter anagram that solved into a 4 + 2 + 4 layout. Saturday is supposed to be a day off from school, but today’s puzzle treated us to a quick refresher course. I had no idea where the answer was headed based on the cartoon or the sentence wording, so solving the clue words cleared everything up in a snap. Once they were all in place, MORE OR LESS became quite visible, and the answer flowed together naturally. It was a clever solve and a fun way to kick off the weekend. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the greater-than symbol and its opposite in the cartoon sentence, pointing us toward MORE OR LESS, along with the teacher’s explanation that the smaller number always wants to eat the bigger one.
