WELCOME BACK,

PUZZLE PLAYERS!

🐝 Bee Brilliant

Today’s cartoon takes us to the final round of a spelling bee, where one contestant is a single word away from the championship. As one of the judges delivers the final challenge, the contestant repeats the word, spells it perfectly, and repeats it one more time while waiting for the verdict. A moment later, the other judge announces they’ve found their champion, bringing the competition to a close. Sometimes the hardest challenges lead to the biggest celebrations.

➤ SPELL-BOUND

The contestant stands confidently at the microphone spelling “CODSWALLOP” correctly. She wears glasses, a short-sleeved T-shirt, a skirt, and her hair is pulled back into a ponytail.

➤ THE JUDGES’ TABLE

The judge on the left has short hair, reading glasses, a small earring in her right ear, and wears a short-sleeved collared shirt with a skirt. She follows along in an open three-ring binder with visible rings and pages. Beside her, the other judge wears a suit as he announces the new champion while raising his hands as if he’s about to begin applauding.

➤ HIVE OF ACTIVITY

The judges sit behind a long table with the contestants just ahead of them. The runner-up waits quietly with his arms folded across his stomach, wearing a short-sleeved collared shirt and shorts. Two empty chairs sit behind him, while honeycomb-patterned wall decorations frame both sides of the stage.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was an 11-letter anagram that solved into a “3” + 4 + 4 layout. What a challenge our final puzzle of the work week turned out to be. I had absolutely no idea where the answer was headed based on the cartoon or the way it was worded, so I knew the clue words would have to do the heavy lifting. Once they were all solved, WORD immediately stood out. Removing it revealed “WON”, leaving LAST to finish the answer. It was a satisfying way to wrap up the week and head into the weekend puzzles. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the contestant spelling ONE LAST WORD, while the judge announced she had “WON”, giving us the wordplay that completed the answer.
