CARTOON ANSWER:

MOOD SWINGS
WELCOME BACK
PUZZLE PLAYERS!

⛳ SLICE, SLICE, BABY

Today’s cartoon drops us onto a golf course where one frustrated golfer is watching his shot head straight for the water. His playing partner tries to calm him down by reminding him how great he felt after the previous hole, which clearly went a whole lot better than this one. Between the flying divot, the wild shot, and the shift from confidence to complete disbelief, this round of golf seems to have emotions changing just as quickly as the scorecard.

🔎 Jumble Jeff’s Jems

➤ THE FRUSTRATED GOLFER

The pouting golfer is wearing checkered shorts, a collared shirt, a wide-brimmed hat, and a golfing glove on his left hand. His golf club is being held straight up in the air while he reacts to the bad shot, and the head of the golf club says “Jumble.”

➤ THE OTHER GOLFER

The second golfer is wearing a visor with scruffy hair sticking out from the top, along with a goatee, collared shirt, shorts, and golf shoes. His club is resting on the ground with his left hand holding it steady while he tries to calm his partner down after the rough swing.

➤ THE COURSE DETAILS

You can see a large divot ripped out of the grass beside the faulty swing with a golf tee sitting nearby. An action line shows the ball flying into the water while farther ahead, a flag marks the hole beside a pair of sand traps. In the distance, another green with similar sand traps is visible, along with trees stretching across the horizon.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 10-letter anagram that would solve into a 4 + 6 layout. Our first puzzle of the weekend turned out to be a pretty smooth round. The WS in the layout, along with the golf setting, immediately brought SWING to mind, and MOOD was sitting there in the leftovers. All that was needed was to tack on the S to SWING for the finish. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the visual of the golfer completely losing his cool after the faulty SWING, along with his partner pointing out how quickly his MOOD changed from happy to upset.

🏌️ Click-To-Reveal Facts*: About Golf Balls

➤ Why do golf balls have dimples?
Golf balls have anywhere from 300 to 500 dimples because the dimples help reduce drag and improve lift while the ball is flying through the air. Without them, golf balls would travel only about half as far as they do now.
SOURCE
➤ How many golf balls are lost every year?
Around 300 million golf balls are estimated to be lost in the United States every year. Water hazards, deep rough, backyard slices, and wooded areas all contribute to golfers donating plenty of balls back to the course.
SOURCE
➤ What was once used inside golf balls?
Early golf balls were once stuffed with boiled goose feathers packed tightly into leather. These “featherie” golf balls were handmade, expensive, and took a long time to produce compared to modern golf balls made by machines today.
