⚾ THE BIGS
Today’s cartoon takes us inside a locker room where one rookie is having the kind of moment every young ballplayer dreams about. After spotting himself on a baseball card for the very first time, he’s practically bouncing off the walls while the veteran seated nearby looks far less impressed by the milestone. The contrast between wide-eyed excitement and seasoned confidence is what makes the whole scene click. For a player suddenly seeing himself become part of the hobby, staying calm was not going to be an easy play.

🔎 Jumble Jeff’s Jems
➤ ROOKIE CARD FEVER
The rookie has bushy hair on top with shaved sides, along with a wide-eyed grin and a bit of eye black under his right eye. He’s still in uniform with a V-neck jersey featuring a circled J on the left chest, matching pants with a stripe running down the leg, wrist sweatbands on both arms, and athletic shoes. Standing on top of the bench, both hands are raised in the air while his baseball card stays clutched in his left hand.
➤ THE BEEN-THERE VETERAN
The veteran remains seated with short-cropped hair and eye black visible under his left eye while holding what appears to be a drink in his left hand. He’s wearing a similar uniform, though the back of his jersey reveals a visible 5 and part of a 4, giving a subtle nod to 1954, the year Jumble first appeared.
➤ CARDS ON THE TABLE
The locker room background shows lockers lining the wall. Additional cards rest between the two players.
🧠 Final Solve
The final answer was a 14-letter anagram that would solve into a 7 + 7 layout. My first inkling was that with two words of the same length, the answer might repeat itself in some way, but that idea disappeared pretty quickly once the clue words came together. With nothing jumping out at me from the layout and the cartoon only giving us the baseball card angle, I leaned heavily on the sentence. Seeing the rookie holding a card of HIMSELF finally tipped me off to spotting SELF in the layout, which left COLLECT as the facepalm finish once everything snapped into place. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the rookie literally COLLECTING HIMSELF with the baseball card in hand, while the veteran telling him to relax alongside all the jumping around gave us the other meaning.
