CARTOON ANSWER:

BA NANOSECOND
WELCOME BACK
PUZZLE PLAYERS!

🍌 Rotten Timing

Today’s cartoon drops us into a kitchen where a man and a woman are standing next to a fruit bowl on the island. She’s holding a bunch of bananas that already look past their prime and insists they were perfectly ripe when she purchased them the other day. He looks just as stunned by how quickly the once-bright yellow fruit seems to have taken a turn for the worse. Between the spotted peels, their wide-eyed reactions, and the fruit’s rapid state of decay, the scene perfectly captures that tiny window where bananas seem to go from tasty snack to bread ingredient almost overnight.

➤ SPOTTY SITUATION

The woman has shoulder-length hair and is holding a bunch of four bananas in her left hand. The bananas already have dark spots showing across the peels.

➤ PEELING THE PAIN

The man has short hair, a goatee, and is wearing a dark T-shirt. One hand is raised toward his mouth as he reacts to how quickly the bananas changed color.

➤ COUNTER PRODUCTIVE

The cartoon takes place in a kitchen with an island in the center and a fruit bowl sitting on top. Cabinets and counter space are visible in the background, while the lower cabinets on the island facing us have round knobs.

🧠 Final Solve

The final answer was a 12-letter anagram that would solve into a single hyphenated word with a “2 + 10” layout. What a way to close out the work week! The first half of the week was a breeze compared to today’s puzzle, which gave me the slip right up until the very end. With the cartoon mentioning “soft, yellow fruit,” I figured BANANA had to be lurking in there somewhere. Oddly enough, SECOND jumped out at me first, which left behind what looked like a pile of mush until the B and A started making sense. From there, NANO slowly clicked into place, and the rest of the answer followed right behind for the finish. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the previously mentioned wording of the cartoon sentence, the bunch of brown BANANAS she was holding, and the dialogue making it clear they had changed in a NANOSECOND after being purchased. Yesterday’s puzzle had my vote for best solve of the month, but there was something about the straightforward cartoon mixed with the right amount of challenge that makes this one my new pick.

🍌 Click-To-Reveal Facts*: About Bananas

➤ How many bananas are eaten around the world every year?
More than 100 billion bananas are eaten worldwide every year, making them the most consumed fruit on the planet. The global banana market is projected to reach nearly $146 billion in 2026, with India, China, and Indonesia leading production across the world.
SOURCE
➤ Are bananas actually berries?
Bananas are technically classified as berries, while the banana plant itself is considered a giant herb rather than a tree because it does not have a woody trunk. Most bananas sold today are Cavendish bananas, and nearly all of them are genetically identical clones from a single Southeast Asian plant line.
SOURCE
➤ What color do most people prefer their bananas?
About 47% of Americans say they prefer bananas when they are yellow with just a little bit of green still showing. Once bananas are picked, they release ethylene gas that speeds up ripening, which is why they can seem to turn from bright yellow to brown almost overnight sitting on the counter.

This recipe works because it tastes like somebody scooped the center out of fresh banana bread and dropped it straight into a mug. The mashed banana keeps it soft, the cinnamon gives it that warm bakery smell, and the whole thing comes together fast enough to make when those brown bananas on the counter are suddenly begging to be used.
