PUZZLE PLAYERS!

👟 SOLE GOAL

Today’s cartoon drops us into a locker room where a player is holding a pair of sneakers that look more like a special order than something you grab off the shelf. He is impressed, maybe a little stunned, asking the coach where they even came from. The coach explains it took some work to track down a place that could make them just right. When you are dealing with sizes like that, finding something that actually fits is a pretty tall order.

➤ YOUNG SHAQ

On the left, that’s a young Shaquille O’Neal in his Cole High School uniform out of San Antonio. As a senior in 1989, he led the team to a perfect 36-0 record and a Class 3A state title while putting up 32 points, 22 rebounds, and 6 assists per game.

➤ COACH MADURA

Standing across from him is head coach Dave Madura. He’s wearing a V-neck warmup top and matching sweats.

➤ LOCKER ROOM SETTING

In the background is a row of lockers lining the wall.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was an 11-letter anagram that would solve into a 2 + 5 + “4” layout. Before I even got going, my guess was NO EASY “FEET”. The shoes clearly gave me FEET, but once I crossed out NO and FEET, it flipped to SMALL for the finish. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, the oversized shoes sitting front and center and the cartoon calling out size 20 did most of the work, making it clear we were dealing with something that was anything but SMALL!

Click-To-Reveal Facts*: About Sneakers

➤ Why are they called sneakers?
The name comes from how quiet they are. Early rubber soles let people move without making noise, so you could literally sneak around compared to hard leather shoes.
SOURCE
➤ When did sneakers first show up?
The first versions showed up in the late 1800s when rubber soles started getting paired with canvas uppers, creating a lighter and more flexible shoe than anything before it.
SOURCE
➤ What made sneakers explode in popularity?
Sports and culture pushed them into everyday life. As basketball, tennis, and running took off, sneakers followed, and once athletes started wearing them publicly, they stopped being just gear and became style.
