CARTOON ANSWER:

BREWHAHA
WELCOME BACK, JUMBLE FANS!

Espresso Yourself

Today’s cartoon brings us to a coffee pickup counter, where things go from routine to competitive in about two seconds. Two baristas, both wearing headbands like this is suddenly a championship round, trade playful jabs over who pulled the better espresso shot. One calls themselves a true professional, while the other fires back that he taught her everything she knows. The customer smiles, thanks them both, and reaches for her drink as the back-and-forth continues. With the espresso machine freed up and another customer waiting in line, it feels like perhaps these coworkers are having a little too much fun on the clock.

HEADBAND DUEL Both baristas are wearing short-sleeve shirts and headbands while standing behind the counter. The barista on the left has two piercings visible in her right ear as they face each other mid-exchange.

LATTE ART SHOWDOWN The male barista is holding an espresso shot topped with a flower-style foam design. The other barista passes the customer’s drink across the counter, featuring a heart pattern in the foam. The customer is dressed in a short-sleeve top with a pocketbook over her left shoulder and one piercing in her ear.

WAITING GAME A customer wearing glasses, bald, and looking an awful lot like America’s favorite wordsmith David L. Hoyt stands in line behind them, hands at his sides, waiting patiently for his turn.

Final Solve

The final answer was an eight-letter anagram that solved into a 4 + 4 layout with quotation marks, letting us know that today’s solution would be punny wordplay, most likely related to coffee. With the BR together in the layout, BREW almost jumped out immediately, leaving HAHA to polish it off. Our nudges were overflowing, from the espresso machine and freshly made drinks to the friendly back-and-forth between the baristas.

Click-to-Reveal Facts*: About Coffee

➤ How many coffee plants would the average drinker need per year?
The average person drinks the equivalent of about six coffee plants per year. Most coffee plants produce roughly one to two pounds of green beans annually, and even at the high end, that only yields around 45 cups per pound. With most people drinking two to three cups a day, a single plant simply does not keep up with demand.

➤ Which has more caffeine — light or dark roast?
Light roasts actually contain more caffeine than dark roasts. Because they are roasted for less time at lower temperatures, light roast beans retain more of their natural caffeine. Dark roasts develop bolder flavor but lose some caffeine in the longer roasting process.

➤ How much does the world’s most expensive coffee cost per pound?
The most expensive coffee in the world can cost around $600 per pound. Kopi Luwak comes from beans that have been eaten and naturally processed by Asian palm civets before being collected, cleaned, and roasted. Its rarity and unique process are what drive the extreme price.
