  2. Here are 10 Fun Facts about: Groundhogs and Groundhog Day

    10. The first official Groundhog Day celebration took place on February 2, 1887, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
    9. The Groundhog diet consists mainly of grass, herbs, and plants like dandelions, daisies, and goldenrods. They also have an eye for human crops, like carrots and corn.
    8. The largest and most famous celebration for Groundhog Day in Canada is held in Wiarton, Ontario and the (albino) groundhog’s name is Wiarton Willie.
    7. Groundhogs are members of the squirrel family and are the largest of all marmots.
    6. Most groundhogs live in the eastern and central parts of the U.S., although you can find them in Canada and even Alaska.
    5. Punxsutawney Phil’s weather predictions have been accurate approximately 39% of the time since 1887. He sees his shadow about 85% of the time.
    4. While hibernating, a woodchuck’s body temperature can drop from about 99 degrees to as low as 37. Humans go into mild hypothermia when their body temperature drops a mere 3 degrees, lose consciousness at 82 degrees and risk facing the ‘great beyond’ below 70 degrees.
    3. The 1993 film Groundhog Day was not filmed in Punxsutawney, PA. It was actually filmed in Woodstock, Illinois.
    2. In the wild, groundhogs can live up to 6 years. In captivity, groundhogs reportedly live up to 14 years.
    1. A groundhog’s burrow can extend up to 50 feet long, with multiple levels, exits, and rooms. They even create small chambers in their burrows to use as bathrooms!

    Final Thought:
“I wake up every day, right here, right in Punxsutawney, and it’s always February 2nd, and there’s nothing I can do about it.” —Phil Connors (Bill Murray)

  3. It’s colder today but knock on a wooden bucket and winter will whisk away if that woodchuck cast’s a shadow and he doesn’t see it.

“There is no way that this winter is ever going to end as long as this groundhog keeps seeing his shadow. I don’t see any other way out. He’s got to be stopped. And I have to stop him.” — Phil Connors (Bill Murray)

  4. He WOODCHUCK IT. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? Reminds me of the GEICO commercial. They may be woodchucks, but they are also groundhogs. So how much ground would a groundhog hog if a groundhog could hog ground? And if a groundhog, when he crawls out of his burrow, chucks wood, or hogs ground, does that mean six more weeks of winter?

    • Thank you jimvb for a laugh today after my frustration with this solve. Anagrams were easiy but the solve wasn’t. Saw wood as would, but stumped on the rest. Til tomorrow, stay well

  6. Good morning. I think we are repeating yesterday all over again. Sure feels like a Monday jumble. This was easy breezy from the words to a semi-blind solve of the cartoon. Once I put the letters down and read the lines the answer came immediately. It had me thinking of that movie as I was doing the puzzle. It was a brilliant answer and a fun movie to see. Until tomorrow stay well and stay safe.

  7. …I hope this finds you well…🙋🏻‍♀️

🥛 She really couldn’t KNOCK the old WHISK…it still worked well enough, so before she’d toss it in the BUCKET, (despite her husband saying that he WOULD CHUCK IT right then and there), she gave it one more try with COLDER milk…🥛

🪣 He kept the old worn BUCKET, that he had so many years,
He and his brother used it to toss hoops, ‘long with his peers
They never had much money, so they’d WHISK their basketball,
Up in the air and hope it’d land within the buckets wall…
And no one thought to KNOCK it, it had definitely served them well
Even on days when COLDER temps, forced it to give no swell
They made the best of what they had…back then they had true grit…
So even though it’s old and worn…no way he WOULD CHUCK IT…🪣

  8. Colder took longer than it should have, but having solved that anagram along w the others, this “Chuck” had all the letters necessary for the cartoon solution. It was a quick solve for the 2 letter word, and woodchuck was a ready solve for this Chuck as well.No snow here in Illinois, but a foggy cloudy morning that would have kept any groundhog from seeing his shadow.

  9. Appropriate puzzle for today and I just heard on the news that there will be six more weeks of winter. Thinking of all you folks with so much snow. Stay warm.

  10. Hi all – The words went well; trying ED and ER as suffixes showed COLDER.
The answer was daunting, and at first glance I thought it might be something like “Refuse to” referencing the garbage, but staring at the letters and thinking about other names for a groundhog showed CHUCK, and that led to the solution.

I’m glad you mentioned marmots in the facts, Mike. We have them up in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and there was an outdoors store in Berkeley called “Marmot Mountain Works.”

    Good wishes to everyone.

🎵”Days may be cloudy or sunny
We’re in or we’re out of the money
    But I’m with you always,
I’m with you rain or shine”🎵
But snow? Ummm, maybe not so much. Good luck to all of you dealing with the storms.

    • Interesting place, Steve. The article I read said that it was originally built as a funeral home. It sort of looked like a blend of Spanish colonial and Tudor architecture.

  11. Liked the answer, most of the anagrams came except for LCREDO for some reason! Beautiful day in LaLa Land today. Six people were arrested for modifying the Hollywood sign……
