    🧶 Right now our country’s going through trials that make one FLINCH,
    It seems as though our wills are tested daily, inch by inch
    I find it hard to fathom why things SHOULD be this way
    Lives RUDELY interrupted by things happening each day
    You watch the news and feel as if you’re living a bad dream
    Like taking a KARATE chop to your gut it would seem
    And then your morning paper brings some respite to the scene
    A PLACID family picture, women happy and serene…
    It warms ones heart to vision this…IMPORT joy of these three
    A simple cartoon showing love…a “CLOTHES-KNIT” FAMILY 🧶

    With all of today’s words looking familiar, a quick check showed that none of them are new, and except for Should, which appeared late in 2018, the remaining five were all seen last year. And the sole repeat anagram CILAPD, goes way back to August of 2014. The stumper? While Placid and Rudely had a few of the Early Birds pausing, it’s Karate that caused four of them to admit defeat. But the solution was pretty much a given all around, with KNIT being an easy choice for our four letter word.

    As I mentioned above, todays cartoon is a welcome respite. With so many of us unable to see our families these past six months, it’s good to see these three women enjoying one another’s company. And with it spanning three generations just makes it better. But the best part is that they’re sharing a pastime that may be a dying art. I don’t know many people who knit today, whereas years ago it seemed much more prominent. Many a morning, I’d be sitting on the train amidst women knitting. And both my Mother and my Grandmother knitted…beautifully. And while todays cartoon is somewhat déjá vu for me…my story never ended this well. Plagued with this left-right confusion of mine, I was never able to get it…So while we were a very, very Close-Knit Family… https://tinyurl.com/y3xo62x5…I guess we weren’t a “CLOTHES-KNIT” FAMILY…And it’s a brilliant play on words…

    As far as our cartoon goes, Jeff’s given us a Mother and daughter who look exactly alike, while the Grandmother bears a close resemblance.     Before I go, I want to send my heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all our Gulf Coast readers in the paths of the tropical storms, and to our members on the West Coast battling the fires. For those of you who may not have seen it last night, David Hoyt, the creator of our puzzles, sent us a video from Washington State. Mike’s pinned it above, and it brings home the struggle our neighbors are going through, on top of the scourge of the pandemic. It’s heartbreaking…and it was very kind of David to think of us amidst it all.

It’s todays cover sheet of the Comic Section of my newspaper, the NY Daily News. The art work is amazing…and except for two panels, it’s pure vintage. Want to name the two? 👀👀🙋🏻‍♀️

  3. 🥋 The neighborhood always had a PLACID vibe, but after a KARATE School had moved in, seeming to IMPORT a group of RUDELY behaved students, the older, stalwart denizens felt the owner SHOULD do something to better control them…but being told, he said without a FLINCH that they were like a CLOSE KNIT FAMILY…and boys would be boys..🥋
    
    🤷🏻‍♂️ His life was pretty PLACID, he spent most time at work,
    He worked the IMPORT business, but only as a clerk
    He was quite shy and quiet, and he knew he SHOULD be more
    Outgoing and not RUDELY keep unsocial and a bore…
    He thought to take KARATE, but he easily would FLINCH,
    As soon as someone got too close…and most things made him wince
    His parents always worried…and now that he’s 33?
    Thank God they own the business…it’s a CLOSE KNIT FAMILY 🤷🏻‍♂️

  6. Hi all – I was stuck on the third word for awhile until I tried the K at the beginning and saw KARATE. Just looking at the answer letter layout, I saw FASHION-ABLE MANNER which fit, but had the wrong letters. I thought CLOSELY-KNIT FAMILY was a good enough pun to merit the quotation marks but again the letters didn’t quite fit, so I had to play around to see that they wanted the stronger pun of CLOTHES-KNIT.

    I only say this because I was surprised when someone POINTED it out in another comic strip, but from their comment and the images I see online, the points of the knitting needles SHOULD be pointing UP.

    I also enjoyed David’s video very much last night, and always like hearing that he appreciates the contributions of everyone here, and of course we all return the appreciation of the HUGE amount of work he puts in creating all these puzzles that we enjoy EVERY DAY.
    So hello back to our brother under the smoke – we’re certainly not alone when you look at that satellite photo that shows the smoke clouds stretching from Vancouver to Tijuana!

    Don’t know what you mean about the colorist in today’s unless it’s that the yarn balls don’t match all the sweaters.

    • Hey Steve. Good Morning. You’re right! 👏🏻 The girls needles are reversed. Good EYE…of the Needle! 😉 And yes, the Grandmothers ball of yarn doesn’t match the sweater she’s just finished knitting. (But at least they’re not all blonde)! 😉 As for the fires, the numbers of acreage lost, and people displaced are staggering. My heart goes out to you all.     • 👏🏻 IKR? It’s brilliant. But can you spot the other item that belies the vintage theme? Actually, I found another one after I posted, so there’s 2 more. 🙋🏻‍♀️

      • I saw the cellphone on the left right away, and the second look just now showed a picture of a guy juggling a cellphone and laptop in the center. The coffee cup and lid in the upper right also look kind of modern.

        • Bingo! 👏🏻👏🏻. The cell phone, and middle panel is near brilliant. And the coffee cup.not so much the cup, but the sleeve which according to Wikipedia wasn’t invented until 1991. Lou swears he has pictures of his Father at work back then and there’s paper coffee cups in the pictures, but I couldn’t find anything online to substantiate the claim! 😉 So that’s still on the table…(no pun intended)…It’s really a great piece of art work, and I just wish the paper itself was “glossy” like the online image is. It pales in comparison…(again, no pun intended). Well done, Steve! Very well done! 🌟🙋🏻‍♀️

  8. This was an UDDER disaster 4 me. Even though I deduced that KNIT must be one of the words I couldn’t get KARATE. Depending on which day of the week you think Sunday is, I certainly hope the week ended today…
    Disaster continues to be the theme in SoCal and across the western states (not to forget the Gulf states). Maybe all the smoke has reduced my thinking capacity?

  9. Another clever puzzle this morning. I have been stumped by karate in the past but got it this morning. Rudely is the word that took me the longest to solve. No problem with the cartoon answer. I’m an avid knitter so that one fell into place. With all this shelter in place business, I’ve been able to do lots of knitting. Nice to hear from David. The air up there looks about the same as the air down in California. We’re told to stay indoors again today as much as possible. Wishing all of you a good day.

    • Hi Betty. I can’t imagine what it must be like. Just seeing it on TV and online is heartbreaking. And yes, it was nice to see David. The knitting…how I envy you. I have tons of things that my Mother and Grandmother knitted and crocheted, but I could never get past a few rows. And pitiful rows they were…God bless you…you’re gifted. In a switch we drove to Naperville to visit Marla and Alice,so I didn’t even open the paper until 3:00 Central time ,so surprisingly, I had all the anagrams except karate,but had a blind solve for the cartoon solution,and needed the K and T,so solved the karate anagram,for a surprisingly successful,though late,Sunday puzzle solution.
