CARTOON ANSWER:

RECALLING STORIES FROM HER YOUTH WAS ONE OF THEIR GRANDMOTHER’S FAVORITE – – –

AT TP MS SIE = PASTTIMES

Good Morning, Everyone!    👵🏻 THE TIMES OF YOUR LIFE…👵🏻

🎶MEMORIES light the corners of my mind…Misty water-colored memories of the way we were…Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind…Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were…🎶 “The Way We Were” –  Barbra Streisand.  1974

👵🏻 I’m starting out by saying that I’m disregarding SICKLE,
I’ve played around with different thoughts…but find I’m in a pickle…
It doesn’t MATCH this family scene…and neither does the HUMMUS,
Too bad there aren’t hors d’oeuvres served…then maybe I could fuss…
The TULIP I could work with…saying there was a bouquet,
Yes, out of our sight, but I could say someone brought them today,
To give them to their Grandma…I could work it into rhyme…
But as it is, I’m settlin’…this isn’t like “PAST-TIMES”! 👵🏻

Phew! I definitely struggled with this rhyme this morning. A sweet Grandmother…and a Sickle? A sickle? My mind just kept cutting off…And trust me..I took quite a few stabs at it, but still no cigar! And Hummus? No matter how hard I tried pasteing my words together, I still couldn’t get my thoughts spread out right…So, I feel I didn’t do Grandma any justice…Sorry, Gram…I folded…

Anyway…our words…As you may have already guessed, David’s giving us another tasty morsel to chew on today. HUMMUS. And we’re given another repeat anagram too, CLISEK. Match and Tulip, we saw them both last year. The stumper? If there is one today, I think Hummus’ll be the one hardest to digest

So, I don’t think I’m going out on a limb here, when I say that todays cartoon is paying a little homage to Kathy Kent-Knurek’s family tree. Kathy is our graphic artist Jeff’s wife, and we see him speaking to her about her 101 year-old Grandmother. The family setting, at 🎶Home in Indiana,🎶 brings us into the Knurek living room, where seated on a couch listening intently to their Great-Grandmother tell a story are Jeff and Kathy’s children, Cameron and Sydney...And in addition, we see a little girl. Maybe it’s a family reunion or a celebratory gathering for Grandma’s Birthday, (And I think it might be, because Jeff’s gone formal! He’s NOT wearing a graphic tee)! …and the child’s the daughter of another family member? Or perhaps it’s a sentimental memory kind of thing with Kathy depicted as a young child sitting and listening to her Grandmother’s stories years ago?But I guess if that were so, there would have to be some sort of…you know “illusion” marks or something, showing that it isn’t “real”…But hey, you know me, I‘m just rooting around for a story…And since I can spin one from zero to 100 at the drop of a hat, maybe we don’t need to go barking up that tree! ..Anyway, celebrating a woman who’s blessed enough to have reached 101 years of age is definitely an amazing thing…as Jeff and Kathy are saying. And our Grandmother, still sharp enough to regale her family with stories of TIMES spent in her PAST?…Well that’s just the icing on the cake! So, in answer to our question…Grandma enjoying telling stories from her youth? It’s one of her favorite “PAST-TIMES”...So sweet, right? …Now if we just could have avoided that damn sickle!

Ok…Eye candy.. I love Grandma speaking of dancing to the Big Bands at the Uptown Theater in Chicago when she was a 19-year old, and her heart necklace is such a sentimental touch. Fifi, the Papillon rescue dog, sleeping at her feet adds to the softness of the panel. Sydney, wearing a Cincinnati Bearcats T-Shirt, and relaxing comfortably in stocking-feet, adds to the homeyness of the cartoon…..But it’s the little girls shirt that’s drawing me in…Back on September 12th, we had a puzzle about a little girl using her Mother’s lipstick to draw on the wall. And she’s wearing a shirt with the same design, a bee being drawn to a daisy! SMH!… Sometimes I just don’t get me…I just climbed the stairs and stood at the top wondering why I went up there…and yet here I can explicitly picture a Jumble cartoon from five months ago…Memories, huh? So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone…and keep in mind…When you reach a certain age, the most valuable thing you have are your memories…So if you’re lucky enough to still have a Grandmother? Cherish the stories...👵🏻🙋🏻‍♀️

  1. 🌷Awakening from that recurring nightmare where someone takes a SICKLE and a MATCH to her flower beds, she knew she had to stop obsessing about that one TULIP that failed to open…and wondered if there was any truth to adding HUMMUS to the dirt like someone said they did in PAST TIMES…🌹🙋🏻‍♀️

  2. 🔠 He hated playing with her, he simply was no MATCH,
For all the ways she read the board…and all the words she’d hatch…
He sat there eating HUMMUS, while he watched her spelling SICKLE,
And this after she just trumped him by coming up with chicle…
He knew he had to up his game…calm down and get a grip,
He’d hate to have his best word be what he just played…TULIP
There had to be a better way…or walls he’d start to climb…
He needs to think of something else and squash Scrabble PASTIMES! 🔠 🙋🏻‍♀️

  3. Good morning. I was able to slash my way through the words and even the dreaded quotation answer. It was almost a blind solve. After having put down the letters and then looking at the cartoon, the answer immediately came. Loved your post Angela. The words were tough to fit in. Until tomorrow stay well

    • Good Morning, Paul. I like your “slashing” your way through! 👏🏻 ..And kudos for defeating those quotation marks!😉 Thanks for the Shout Out..I enjoyed it, but it almost kicked my butt! Hoping you have a great day, Brooklyn! 👵🏻🙋🏻‍♀️

  4. *** Jeff just posted to Facebook that the beautiful centenarian featured in today’s puzzle is named Margaret, and she’s turning 102 this year! God bless her! …And where Italians usually toast with a Cent’ Anni…it pales in Miss Margaret’s case…Instead I’ll raise my glass to… Ti auguro un anno pieno di sorrisi. Ti auguro un anno di mille occasioni. Ti auguro un anno ricco di emozioni. Auguroni per il tuo compleanno…🍷🙋🏻‍♀️
And the Uptown Theater? Chicago! https://tinyurl.com/vq2322c

  5. Reminded me of my grandmother,we lived with in a 2 family house, when I was growing up.We lived upstairs and my grandparents lived downstairs. The solution was a quick solve,w hummus being an almost new word to me.

    • Good Morning, Professor. A sweet memory. Grandmothers are such special people…I didn’t live in the same house as mine growing up, but I saw Her every day. She was my heart ♥️💔So, no Hummus? I have to admit, for some reason I was late getting to the party with it, but once I tried it, I was sold. I like the garlic and roasted pepper the best…And I agree, an easy, breezy solve today! Have a good one, Prof! 👵🏻🙋🏻‍♀️

  6. Hi all – Not much trouble with the words or answer today. Pretty evident that she was talking about her “past times”, paused a second at SICKLE, and looked at HUMMUS a couple of times to make sure it was spelled right.

Like Chuck, my family lived upstairs and my grandmother and (musician) grandfather lived downstairs, and today’s cartoon reminded me of his stories of listening to Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman in the ‘30’s.

    Have a great day, everyone!

“Since the Supreme Court legalized gambling, even the Halal corner grocery store has a slot machine where you can MATCH a TULIP and a SICKLE to win a free jar of HUMMUS dip”.

    • ….And if you hang out there all day, MATCHing up all the TULIPs and SICKLEs…is that HUMMUSside? 🤦🏻‍♀️ Here’s to a great day, Chickpea! 🍛🙋🏻‍♀️

  7. Paused at hummus but the cartoon answer was an easy solve. I have good memories of all of my grandparents. Wishing all of you a happy Saturday.

    • Hi Betty…Grandparents=♥️ And how lucky are we to have known them? Wishing you a Happy Saturday, too! 👵🏻🧓🏻🙋🏻‍♀️

  8. Noticed that tulip could have also been uplit. Obviously, the letters wouldn’t work.

    • Hi. As I understand it, the rule of thumb, according to the puzzles creators is that they don’t put any word into play unless it’s listed in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. And TBT, despite having doubts, I see that Uplit is…So all I can say is I’m going to forward this to David, and I’m sure he’ll get back to us. Thanks for the catch! 🙋🏻‍♀️

FURTHER RESEARCH: https://tinyurl.com/ubpn9cx. MAYBE NOT! 🤷🏻‍♀️

  9. Interesting. I’ve been playing Jumble for awhile and know the rule about the M-W Dictionary. When I looked up uplit on my phone, it certainly appeared to be a word that would qualify, but as you said, “Maybe Not!”

    • Harvey…IDK! I did the same…using different searches. A conundrum! I’m getting mixed messages, as you can see from the links. (And as I just told David, I put it into an on-line Scrabble game that I play, and it took as valid)… Bottom line? I’m glad I’m just the messenger! 😉 Stay tuned! 🤷🏻‍♀️

        • ?? Moi? Uh..no! Trust me with all the pressing issues hanging in the balance, this one definitely isn’t carrying the weight! 😉 At the moment my biggest concern is needing a third refrigerator to store all this Oscar Party food…Priorities, priorities! 😂🙋🏻‍♀️

            • Like we do with the MLB Playoffs? 😉 No, not what I’m doing…..I’m handling the “basics”…lasagna, sausage and peppers, rice balls, chicken parm. (You know 4 of the basic food groups)! 😂😂 But some of the others like doing what you’re saying..and sometimes it’s really creative. Everybody brings something…🏆🙋🏻‍♀️

    • LOL! 👏🏻👏🏻 That would be nice, Harvey, except I’m not big on veal, and it’s a little too much to make for 50 some odd people. But I have done Chicken Oscar a time or two. Funny thing tho, between the “Oscar” and the béarnaise sauce I can’t get through cooking that meal without a lot of laughing 😂😂 Ended up burning the sauce the last time! Do you know what I’m referencing? The Odd Couple? The Béarnaise Barbara episode? 🍗🙋🏻‍♀️

  10. Quite familiar with the show, but don’t recall the episode. Do tell. My mother used to have a friend named Bernice, but I don’t think she was the subject of an episode, nor do I think she had a sauce named for her.

  11. Sorry, had to go out and didn’t see your post. I’ll check it out later…time for the Oscars.

  12. Thank you. From roast beef to beef stew in a flash! Beer and dry mustard (whatever that is.)
By the way, I have no idea when (if) you sleep!

    Any word on “uplit”?

    • ° You’re welcome, Harvey. And yes, Felix did a very good job of thinking on his feet…despite his arms being out of commission! 😉 How I loved that show…how I loved Jack Klugman! There was a remake produced a few years ago…Matthew Perry as Oscar. I cringed…
      ° No, nothing yet…If I have a chance, I’ll check…
° The sleep? LOL…Yes, of course I do. I’m just not a “conventional” sleeper. Have a great day, Harvey!
