👂 HOW’D THAT GET HEAR?
Today’s cartoon drops us into a campaign office where some workers are tearing the place apart. They’ve discovered someone has been listening in, and now the search is on to find out just how far it goes. One is up on a ladder checking the smoke detector, another finds something suspicious behind a campaign sign, and a third is searching underneath a desk. The deeper they look, the more unwanted surprises they uncover. Needless to say, these unexpected office guests are really starting to get on their nerves.

➤ BUG HUNT
The three campaign workers are scouring the office for listening devices. One is on a ladder with the smoke detector hanging by its wires as he holds a device in his right hand. The woman has found another behind the VOTE FOR WILSON campaign sign, while the third worker is underneath the desk reaching up toward one more.
➤ HEADQUARTERS UNDERCOVER
The door identifies the room as CAMPAIGN HEADQUARTERS. The office has a simple setup, with a desk featuring two drawers on the right side, a telephone and a larger file cabinet along the wall.
🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was a 12-letter anagram that solved into a 2 + 6 + 4 layout. Our Thursday solve was a clean sweep. Reading LISTENING DEVICES and seeing the question posed by the cartoon sentence brought IT BUGGED THEM instantly to mind. The clue words quickly confirmed it. With such a straightforward solve this late in the week, it has me thinking we might have to bring our A-game for tomorrow’s solve.
If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our nudges were the dialogue about how IT BUGGED THEM to keep finding one listening device after another, while the visual of the devices themselves, also known as BUGS, brought the wordplay together.

🥄 VIRAL RECIPE
This old-fashioned Southern walnut pie keeps things simple with a rich, sweet filling loaded with chopped walnuts and baked inside a flaky pie crust. The walnuts rise to the top as it bakes, giving every slice a crisp, nutty layer over the gooey filling underneath.

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT
(Click phrase to reveal its origin)
SPILL THE BEANS
Meaning: To reveal a secret or give away information that was supposed to stay quiet.
So where did it come from?
One popular theory takes us all the way back to ancient Greece, where beans were used in some forms of voting. The story goes that light and dark beans represented different votes and were dropped into a container to keep the tally hidden. If that container was accidentally tipped over, the beans spilled out for everyone to see, revealing the result before it was supposed to be known. It certainly makes for a perfect explanation, but there’s no evidence tying that ancient practice directly to the phrase we use today.
What we can document comes much later. In a November 25, 1902 horse-racing story in the St. Louis Republic, the newspaper wrote “the beans were spilled.” Back then it meant that expectations had been upset rather than that somebody had revealed a secret. The expression continued showing up in American sports writing, and over the following years it moved toward the familiar meaning we know today.
