WELCOME BACK,
PUZZLE PLAYERS!
🧵 A FITTING UPDATE
Today’s cartoon shows us a seamstress hard at work as a wedding dress comes together stitch by stitch on the mannequin beside her. When the client calls to check on its progress, she keeps one hand on the phone and the other on the fabric as she assures her that everything will be ready for her appointment. Quite a bit of the gown is already in place, although there are still enough loose ends to keep her sewing machine humming. The dress may not be finished, but from what the bride can hear—and what we can see—things are coming together nicely.

➤ SEW CALM, SEW COLLECTED
The seamstress sits calmly in a wheeled chair with her hair pulled back into a bun. She holds the cell phone to her ear with her left hand while skillfully guiding a long section of fabric through the sewing machine with her right. Her left foot rests on the machine’s foot control, and a spool of thread is positioned on top.
➤ PINNING DOWN THE DETAILS
The wedding dress is displayed on an armless mannequin, with much of it already assembled. Several alteration marks are visible around the waistline, while the neck of the mannequin is being used as a pincushion to hold several straight pins.
🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was a 13-letter anagram that solved into a “3” + 3 + “3” + 4 layout. Our second-to-last puzzle of the workweek was all sewn up in seconds. With a wedding dress taking shape in the cartoon and SEAMSTRESS appearing in the setup, “SEW” looked like a natural fit for the quoted three-letter word that appeared twice in the answer layout. Her reassuring reply to the bride-to-be brought the rest of the familiar phrase together, completing this one without a snag. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the phone call and her assurance that everything was on schedule and coming together nicely, giving us SO FAR, SO GOOD, while her work at the machine provided the visual for “SEW” in the wordplay.

A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE
What does it mean?
“A stitch in time saves nine” means fixing a small problem right away can keep it from turning into a much bigger one later.
So, where did it come from?
This old proverb comes from something very practical. When clothing was repaired rather than simply replaced, a small tear or loose seam could often be fixed with a quick stitch. Ignore it, though, and everyday wear could cause the opening to spread, leaving a much bigger sewing job. The “nine” wasn’t necessarily meant as an exact count of stitches. Its rhyme with “time” helped turn a simple piece of sewing advice into a saying people could easily remember.
One of the earliest known appearances in print came in 1732, when English clergyman and writer Thomas Fuller included “A Stitch in Time May save nine” in his collection Gnomologia: Adagies and Proverbs; Wise Sentences and Witty Sayings, Ancient and Modern, Foreign and British. Fuller was gathering sayings that were already in circulation, so the proverb is likely older than his book. Nearly three centuries later, we may use it for everything from home repairs to everyday problems, but its message still follows that little tear in the fabric: take care of it now before you have a much bigger job on your hands.
