🪙 A CENTS OF WONDER
Today’s cartoon gathers us around a table, where three generations are admiring Grandma’s penny collection. As they flip through an album of coins, Mom seems surprised by how valuable some of those little copper pieces can be, while her daughter is trying to figure out how one penny could possibly be worth so many more. Grandma, meanwhile, knows exactly what years of saving can add up to. All the time she put into her collection has certainly paid off in more ways than one.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was a 16-letter anagram that solved into a 5 + 4 + 2 + 5 layout. Our Sunday solve gave us plenty of letters to work with, and with pennies scattered throughout the cartoon, CENTS was the first word that jumped out at me. Once all six clue words were solved, the way the cartoon sentence was worded made OF look like a pretty safe bet for that two-letter spot. With nearly half the letters accounted for, GREAT began to take shape, and DEAL quickly followed to cash this one in.
If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were Grandma mentioning the value of some of the pieces in her collection. Saving them over all those years made a GREAT DEAL OF SENSE, with the visual of pennies everywhere giving us “CENTS” for the wordplay finish.

🌑 That’s A Wrap!
👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT
(Click phrase to reveal its origin)
PENNY-WISE AND POUND-FOOLISH
Meaning: To be extremely careful about small amounts of money while making poor decisions that cost much more.
So, where did it come from?
The expression dates back at least to the early 1600s. In his 1621 work
The Anatomy of Melancholy,
English scholar
Robert Burton
wrote of people being “penny wise, pound foolish.” The contrast was especially vivid in Britain, where a penny represented a small amount while a pound represented considerably more.
The phrase survived because the lesson never really got old: saving a few pennies doesn’t mean much if you lose pounds in the process. More than 400 years later, we still use penny-wise and pound-foolish for choices that save a little now but cost a lot later.
