Today’s cartoon shows us a wife who’s concerned that her husband might be the reason they’re going to be late. Already dressed and ready to head out the door, she calls upstairs to let him know it’s time to get moving. Much to her surprise, hubby is standing behind her with his jacket in hand, clearly one step ahead. For someone she thought was holding up the works, he certainly had time on his side.

🧩 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 12-letter anagram that solved into a 7 + 5 layout. Our first puzzle of the weekend came together in what felt like no time at all. With the visual of the wife calling to her husband and him standing behind her prepared to go, READY seemed like a natural fit for the five-letter slot. With no guess coming for the seven-letter word, it was up to the clue words to get this one finished in a timely manner.

Much to my surprise, READY was sitting there twice, and with both of them crossed out, all that was left was to tack AL- onto the front so these folks could get on their way. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudge was the husband’s dialogue pointing out that he had been waiting for her all along. With him standing behind her prepared to go, the visual made it clear he was ALREADY READY.

The key is the old meaning of “nick.” A nick was a small notch or cut made as a precise mark. Before modern clocks and record keeping, people commonly cut notches into wood and other surfaces to keep count, record amounts, or mark important points. A nick therefore came to represent an exact point or moment rather than something approximate.

By the 1500s and 1600s, “in the nick” was being used to mean at the exact or critical moment. Adding “of time” made the meaning even clearer, and the expression has been keeping people right on schedule ever since.
