REIGNING
HAIL, YE PUZZLE PLAYERS!
👑 CROWN AND CLEAR
Today’s cartoon takes us to a royal coronation, where a new king is just moments away from officially taking the throne. The officiant is lowering the crown onto his head as a crowd of onlookers gathers for the big occasion. With one guest praising the weather and another pointing out the perfectly clear sky, it seems even Mother Nature is giving His Majesty the royal treatment. For now, the skies are clear, but something tells me there’s a new kind of reign in the forecast.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was an 8-letter anagram that solved into a single word of the same length. Our second challenge of the work week barely had any time to take the throne. One look at the cartoon sentence had me thinking RAINING, while the visual of the king being crowned took care of the other half of the wordplay.
If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were all the talk about the weather, both from the guests and in the setup of the cartoon sentence, letting us know it wasn’t going to be RAINING anytime soon. Meanwhile, the visual of the king being crowned gave us REIGNING to bring today’s royal affair to a close.
👑 CLICK TO REVEAL FACTS: ABOUT KINGS
Henry I of England. According to a medieval chronicler, he became ill after eating an excessive amount of lampreys, a type of long, eel like, jawless fish.
Henry VI. He inherited the English throne in 1422 following the passing of his father, Henry V.
Henry VIII. His marriages produced one of history’s most famous royal mnemonics: divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived.

This old fashioned pie turns a splash of vinegar and a handful of pantry staples into a sweet, custardy dessert with roots in times when fresh fruit wasn’t always available. The vinegar adds brightness rather than a sour taste, making this simple pie much more delicious than its name might suggest.

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT
(Click phrase to reveal its origin)
A KING’S RANSOM
Meaning: A king’s ransom means an extraordinarily large amount of money, usually so much that the price seems almost unbelievable.
So, where did it come from?
The expression goes back to medieval times, when captured nobles and royalty could literally be held for ransom. One of the most famous examples involved England’s King Richard I, better known as Richard the Lionheart. While returning from the Third Crusade in 1192, Richard was captured in Austria and eventually handed over to Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI.
The price demanded for Richard’s freedom was staggering: 150,000 marks of silver, roughly two to three times what England’s government normally took in during an entire year from taxes and other sources of income. Heavy taxes were imposed to help raise the money, and Richard was finally released in February 1194. It was, quite literally, a king’s ransom.
