WELCOME BACK, PUZZLE PLAYERS!

📖 PROSE BEFORE DOZE

Today’s cartoon shows us a late night reader who’s having a hard time saying goodbye to a book she doesn’t want to put down. With sleepy eyes and her kitty already curled up beside her, she’s reached the final paragraph but isn’t quite ready to turn the last page. After spending so much time wrapped up in a good story, she’s making those final few words last as long as she can.

➤ ONE MORE PAGE

The woman is lying down and propped up by a pillow, with her hair pulled back by a headband and sleepy eyes behind her reading glasses. She has a stud earring in her left ear and is wearing an oversized hooded pajama top with large cuffs. She’s reading the ending of Pride and Prejudice, with the title visible on the book’s cover. Her lower half is covered by a blanket, with slippers on her feet and her kitty curled up beside her left leg. A side table holds a lidded cup with a straw and what appears to be a cell phone.

🧠 FINAL SOLVE

The final answer was a 7-letter anagram that solved into a “4” + 3 layout. Our first puzzle of the week was practically over before it started. With the cartoon sentence mentioning her being on the last paragraph, I figured END would be part of the answer, but the four letter word in quotes had me at a loss. Once the clue words were solved, I initially saw LATE in the remaining four letters, but that didn’t give us the wordplay we needed. Another look brought “TALE” easily into view to bring this one to a fitting close. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were the woman saying she didn’t want the last paragraph to be over, along with the visual of the book being on its final page, letting us know she was at the TAIL END of her story, while the cartoon sentence referencing a novel pointed us toward “TALE” for the wordplay finish.

🌗 That’s A Wrap!

👀 WORD YOU LOOK AT THAT

(Click phrase to reveal its origin)

READ BETWEEN THE LINES

Meaning: To read between the lines means to look beyond what is directly written or said and understand a meaning that is implied but not openly expressed.

So, where did it come from?
The expression is generally traced to methods of secret writing and cryptography. Messages could be concealed between the visible lines of ordinary text, including through the use of invisible ink. To uncover what was really being communicated, a reader might quite literally have to read between the lines.

One of the earliest known appearances of the expression in print came in an August 1862 article in The New York Times. While discussing a puzzling communication from British Foreign Secretary Earl Russell, the newspaper said its only option was to “read between the lines” to determine what the message really meant.

From there, the expression took on the figurative meaning we still use today: looking beyond the actual words to understand what has been left unsaid.
