WELCOME BACK,
PUZZLE PLAYERS!
✈️ WRIGHT DIRECTION
Today’s cartoon shows us the Wright brothers as they work through the early stages of designing their first aircraft. Orville is already thinking ahead to carrying passengers, while Wilbur is more focused on proving they can get it off the ground in the first place. With big ambitions on one side and a more practical approach on the other, the best path forward for now is to keep their first attempt uncomplicated.

➤ ORVILLE — LOOKING AHEAD
Orville stands behind the drafting table with a mustache and period clothing as he talks about adding seats so passengers can eventually fly with them.
➤ WILBUR — FIRST THINGS FIRST
Wilbur sits at the drafting table with the aircraft schematics spread across the drawing board and a drafting triangle nearby. Seated on a tall-backed stool, he holds a small model of the aircraft in his right hand.
➤ THE WORKSHOP
The brothers appear to be working in a simple workshop, with their aircraft plans covering the drafting table. On the table in the foreground are several thin pieces of wood and a knife, which appear to have been used to fashion the model Wilbur is holding.
🧠 FINAL SOLVE
The final answer was a 14-letter anagram that solved into a “5” + 3 + 6 layout. Sunday solves usually take a bit, but this one got off the ground pretty quickly. After reading the cartoon sentence and seeing the Wright brothers as the subject of today’s panel, “PLANE” instantly came to mind. With the first word in quotes, I was pretty sure I was on the Wright track. Once all six clue words were solved and “PLANE” departed from the layout, the P made SIMPLE stand out in what remained, leaving AND to bring this one in for a smooth landing. If today’s puzzle slowed you down, our biggest nudges were Wilbur holding the model PLANE, along with the dialogue suggesting that they keep things PLAIN AND SIMPLE, with “PLANE” providing the wordplay for the final solution.
